Love this channel, but you need a RODE microphone my friend! We wanna hear every word you say!
Always the best info! I am currently using your potted plant to compare the health of my seed-grown plants. The watering info you provide is invaluable.
Name it drake
Very good. Valuable information. Thanks!
Its videos like this that give me confidence in trying new plants. Like my Cephalotus. I was so afraid of trying them until I saw your ultimate care video on Cephs and watched it over and over again until I understood how to take care of them. Heliamphora is another one that I'm afraid of trying but will give it a go as well. :) Thanks, Damon and Daniela for yet another awesome video!
Thank you very much for that information highly valued
Do you guys scarify the seeds? I heard they just won't germinate or they can take upto 12 months to germinate if you dont so I rub mine between sandpaper until they turn grayish in color and then I sow them directly into a clay pot (to save me having to use a peat pot etc). I did this last year and it worked great, but then they died through winter before they even flowered, I then sowed a load more seed this year using the same method, on 6th of march but still zero germination on them at all, which is so annoying because by the time they do germinate and become mature plants its just going to be winter again and before I know it they'll just die through winter, I love these plants and really want to grow them well, but for me its one of the only carnivores that seem to just hate me
shall I put it under direct sunlight or outside in the shade?
Can I get a free plant lol and this helps me cause I’m a beginner so thanks
Is that sphagnum moss alive or dead? I am curious because I am not sure which one to use for my plants. I am struggling quite a bit getting the substrate and water perfect.
These Drosera are nightmare fuel for insects!
Great video Damon. Heaps of good info. I have to do a lot of dividing coming up at Spring time, (I'm in Oz), so it will be very helpful.
Beautiful plants
Can they survive northeast winter?
That red color is beautiful 😍
Thank you so much for getting out with this to everybody! I was wondering for a long time what that was, but now I know!❤️
can I grow nepenthes outside is san francisco area?
In many parts of San Francisco you can! Just make sure you bring it inside the night time temps drops below 40F
@@California_Carnivores thank you for the response, follow up question if I were to try nepenthes outside, which one would be the most beginner friendly?
When you repot these do you keep the old leaf on it or remove it?
I remove them if they are easy to snip off but I don’t take every single leaf off if it risks exploding the whole plant by pulling them off or cutting too close
So you can put these your refrigerator? I live in texas, what month do i put it in the refrigerator?
You’ll want them to be in the fridge for 6-8 weeks. You can put them in when night time temps consistently drop below freezing in your area (but I’m guessing in Texas that’s not a huge issue) or just pick a window of time to make a nice chilly winter for them. They’d naturally go dormant from October-March (with some variation every year due to climate and cultivar)
This method has worked fantastic for me in Vancouver, BC. The very surface of the peat gets to around the mid 30s in Celsius under direct summer sun but drops to 18-20 degrees after pushing it an inch into the substrate. The air temperature in August is typically averaging high 10s-low 20s during the hottest months and 12-14 at night. Hot 30 degree days and 18 degree nights are very rare and adding a shade cloth does wonders. I will add some live sphagnum to hopefully to shield and insulate the dark peat from all that solar radiation as well as add some extra surface area for evapotranspiration cooling.
There are some other tricks like nesting your pot inside a bigger pot that is lined with rocks and running recirculated water in that larger pot to make a constant layer of cool!
How did you get that huge Venus Flytrap Plant behind you?
That’s a sculpture 😄
Should you propagate if you relocate to a bigger pot
It’s really up to you! If you want to big pot full of them, then leave them together but if you do want divisions, repotting is a good time to do it
You are really unique let's be plant cultivor collect all we can find. I need go no further than you for care
Dan I can really say we are in unison with being bonsai landscaping saieki style and carnivorous plant bogs etc. my friend you have the knowledge of the flytrap I need some flytrap cultivor
How do I go about getting a plant, and what would be best for me? Central California watching
You can order on our website www.californiacarnivores.com. And for outside I’d recommend a sarracenia but protect it from the full afternoon sun in your area. For inside you can grow cape sundews, Mexican Pinguicula and highland Nepenthes!
love it!!!
What is that giant saracinia in the upper left part of the video?
Some growers say this type of watering system isn't good for your plants, that it may cause root rot and a lack of oxygen simulation. What's your thoughts?
That’s very rare and happens under specific circumstances in our experience. We’ve been growing these plants for 30 years and have talked to thousands of customers all over the United States and the world so we get a lot of data on what works and what goes wrong! Generally root rot happens only in extremely hot and humid climates like Alabama in summer. In most places this is not an issue. And the plants naturally grow in water logged, boggy soil so they’re adapted for this. We also often see people misdiagnose root rot because a lot of carnivorous plants have black or brown roots naturally and not many of them. Often the death is caused by something else and root rot is blamed. That all being said, it can happen!
You should name the zipper flytrap. Unzipped predator
So feed them once a week how many worms or flys, i found daddy long legs mosquitos, roaches
You can feed as many of the traps as you want - we’ll feed a few at a time because it would take us all day to feed them all 😂
Wanted to know why my fly trap isn’t growing. I put it through winter dormancy. It started to grow back a little bit. I cut the flower stock, and then it just stopped growing. It’s in the proper pot proper media clean water gets plenty of sunlight. I’ve been spraying them with Maxi fertilizer once a month and still no growth.
Is it inside or outside? How many hours of direct sunlight does it get? What area are you in?
@@California_Carnivores Outside. Aurora Illinois. I have them on the south part of my house. Last year I had them on the railing of my porch. They were getting plenty of sunlight all day long and did well. This year I tried putting them on a table so they wouldn’t fall over if it got windy. But I noticed a shadow would cast on them in the morning from the railing. and later, on in the day, they would have some cover from a tree blocking the sunlight. My B52 was growing fine, but my regular flytrap wasn’t growing. I just put them back on the railing in the same place I had last year that gets more sunlight, so I hope that works
@@davidkrzywanos350 give them a few weeks to acclimate to the new spot and I bet they start growing more robustly! They really like a lot of sun!
Goodbye crane fly
What type of soil?
We use five parts peat moss to one part perlite
Are these guys suppose to be, I guess you can call it lethargic, the traps aren't opening, also, do I need to put the moss back on like they came, thanks
@@michaelgiddens4118 if you just got them, it may be that they just need a little time to acclimate and the traps were triggered in shipping and will open again with time. they don’t need moss on top!
UK here, last years summer and this years summer have been exceptionally cooler im so jealous that you guys are having the summer we SHOULD be getting 😂
Oh man, we’re in for a crazy hot summer this year! 😂
@@California_Carnivores I wish😂 your sarracenia will be loving life, so many of mine are way behind
please send info on how to bi from you

Reverse osmosis water is great however a lot of people like myself have a polishing filter and an alkaline mineralizer filter after the RO water out so the water coming out of that little metal faucet are actually quite high in TDS. I have a junction under my sink where I can get the pure RO water before it is being remineralized. Probably worth mentioning in the future. " don't send me pictures of worms and stuff, I'm a carnivorous plant expert I know about plants but not other things." Points at a bear: "what is that? Hello friend." Gets face ripped off. (sorry just a joke. I wish no harm)
feed them alot? i thought you have to feed every few weeks?
Venus flytraps grown outdoors would feed constantly! You can feed them a lot inside but if you’d like to get on a schedule you can feed them every few weeks!
What kind of rock can I use?
Lava or pumice is best!
Hello, how much is a Laueana ping , flowering size, like in the video? Or if purchased ,u guys only sell starter/smaller ones? Thanks for the video advice, happy growing!
Check out our website for what we have available! Most of our pings will flower in the first year and are about the size of a quarter www.californiacarnivores.com
Man your guys videos were so good I ordered a couple hundred dollars worth of plants and feel really confident thanks much
Thank you so much!
wich species or hybrid is it? its really cool!
Thats lowii x truncata!
Thank you for this guide! I chose a Sarracenia for my first carnivorous plant, mostly because it's native to my state, and this has been a huge help to get me started. Our 100 degree temps with 100% humidity are finally useful for something!
Why is the top of my sundew leaves turning black?? It gets tons of sun each day and lots of water.
It’s normal for the leaves to cycle and die back, so it could just be a normal leaf cycling or sometimes the tips burn when it’s hot
Just so you know, in the UK pinger is a common name for MDMA
😳😂
What happens I'd the dew is consumed
Nothing notable
I'm familiar with test because i have it at home😊❤
Um I thinked you made a mistake it's nepenthes " x ventrata "
It’s known by both names in the hobby 😊
Can you do a video on Nepenthes seed and pollen storage?
It’s known by both names in the hobby 😊
@@California_Carnivores lol I think you replied to the wrong comment?
@@ThatOneSnake oops! I was moving too fast! 😂🤦♀️ we do store them both in the fridge, the seeds we place in small wax paper bags and then in a resealable plastic bag with a little packet of silica! We store pollen in aluminum foil
So informative - thank you so much for this! Does anyone have any tips on how to keep your venus fly trap a manageable size? I'm honestly fine with having one live on the window sill and manage the kitchen bugs in the summer. Would just keeping it in the same size pot prevent it from going crazy? I don't think I could handle an ever multiplying chain of them to be honest lol
Try getting a smaller cultivar like Petite Red Dragon or Red Pablo!
Thank you. I have huuuge flowers. I will wait till they look like you describe.
