I mean, once you have selected shutter speed and aperture to make the exact depth of field and movement freeze that you want, the only left variable is ISO, so I shoot for lowest possible but if you have to raise it well there is not much choice. unless I'm willing to get less depth of field and use a bigger aperture. Choices.

I've recently had the opportunity to invest all of my time into doing photography for work, and somehow it seems like it might pay off. These tips are very relevant for any newcomers to the hobby. #1 is especially relevant, and I would add that vetting your local area is very important. My area is extremely saturated with wedding and portrait photographers... I mean seriously saturated. I decided that I wouldn't put much energy into pursuing either of those genres. I grew up playing sports, and so action/sports are what I've naturally gravitated to over the past few years. The market for my genre of photography is less saturated, with many venues allowing open season for freelance work. I did a lot of motocross the past couple years, selling images to racers/parents and building my portfolio. Recently I responded to a posting in a local photography group i'm in looking for a sports photographer. I responded to the post, i've applied several times before with this guy, but being recently out of work I think is what got me the job. I now have the potential to make WAY more shooting hockey than I did at my day job. Dont get discouraged. Dedicate yourself to your craft, know your gear, know what you're shooting, know what makes a compelling image, know how to fix something on the fly regarding settings or what not without blowing your opportunity. It will happen sooner or later if you apply yourself and just keep hammering. Maybe you too will have the blessing of being fired, and falling into the best thing to ever happen to you!

I'm a concert focus photographer, this man is right. 100%. I shoot in some of the crappiest lighting conditions you could think of, and I routinely use 8000-10000 iso on an old 5d mark iii. They look fine, and my style incorporates some film grain occasionally anyway. I think we need to move away from technically "perfect" images, and just focus on photo itself, and leave the techy stuff behind. Don't over think it, its just photos

Which brands have counter clockwise zoom? I have used Canon all my life and was wondering which lenses operate similarly to Canon when it comes to manual zoom and focus.

Something that you touched on, but I wished talked about more, is pixel density. For example, you mentioned needing to stretch the image to fill the screen with a crop sensor. But that’s not what really happens, if the two sensor types have the same amount of megapixels (which they often do). That is to say, the crop sensor image isn’t stretched - it’s cropped. Additionally, the larger pixels on a full-frame camera vs crop sensor camera of equivalent megapixels should lead to better low-light performance, right?

Great video! - this is for the commenters. The big thing that goes overlooked None of this matters anymore because no one prints their work. The fact of the matter is that a point and shoot 6mp camera from 15 years ago is all anyone needs since 99.9% of all images are viewed on a crappy cell phone. and yes the latest and best apple phone is hot garbage compared to a properly executed large format print. it makes no difference what format you shoot it never goes anywhere other than instagram.

I shoot both indoor and outdoor high school sports photography using a Canon 6D Mark II with a Tamron 70-200 telephoto F2.8 lens. I set my ISO on automatic and my photographs turn out great. Let the camera take the guess work out of the equation.

I have used different modes in the past, but I have been using manual so long I almost forgot about the other modes until I was shooting on a day with moving clouds and constant changing of light and remembered that there is a better way to shoot that. Thanks for the reminder.

he says a wide apperture is desirable for street photography? I disagree. Most all the street photographers I know, insteading myself, are doing the opposite: at least F8.

Thank you for this amazingly detailed video! I dont really like the crop factor talk, no matter how much sense you try to make of it, in reality, it is only going to work in ideal circumstances that most of the time is only found in simulators. For example.... a smaller sensor does not necessarely translate to lower quality picture than a bigger sensor, depending on the technology used for said smaller sensor, the advantage or disavantage can narrow alot more than what is expected, also it is hard to think of all smaller sensor cameras having exactly the same capabilities in light capture, lens is only part of the story when it comes image quality, a part of it can also be attributed to the way the sensor is made, aka, is all sensor tech the same? how about stacked sensors? how about high res sensors? how about other iterations where newer sensor revision actually produce better shots? Are all sensor of a specific physical size exactly the same regarding picture quality?... In the era of "AI" with so much photo manipulation, you also can get different results even in manual mode, also... sometimes for small sensors, depending on the quality of the image processing software, auto mode will produce results that no manual editing will ever be able to match in picture quality. And finally... there is no such thing as "stretching" the picture to fill the screen on smaller sensor physical size, in fact a full frame sensor with a smaller resolution will actually need that said "picture stretch" on the screen more to even match the smaller sensor higher resolution, smaller sensors just do not capture the entire area of light that a full frame sensor is able to. All in all what i found extremely useful from this video is the fact that smaller sensor have a different bokeh/background blurr/DOF, whatever you want to call it than bigger sensors using same lenses as they do not use the entire light captured from said lens.

Thanks Simon. After 8 Months with my new camera I settled on the technique you are showing here. Mainly Street photography so can vary quickly. I set out with 500th to freeze the subject and my unsteadiness. Then adjust aperture and try and keep iso low. Nothing locked in. Last night an indoor basketball game so 250th and f4.Good result. Have subscribed and look forward to more of your well presented work. Cheers from Australia.(Fiy Z6II with 24-120 f4)
