Great video, the 9th one is so true, is my favorite and the one i teach my students too. Don't rush to export, give your brain the time to de-tox, you'll probably need to make some further changes and then export.! If there is no time to wait and need to export right away, A reference image is also a good idea to compare to.. Instead of 30 min or a day just compare and see if you are far off.

The best tip in this is the wait 30 minutes, I cannot count the times I have gone back a day later, or later in a day, and realized I was too heavy handed with my editing.

This is so far the most useful video about raw processing, that I have ever seen.

Welcome aboard!

One of the key things you do so well is to dismantle the elitism from photography. I have a few different interest fields (cycling, photography, etc), and all of them are plagued to a smaller or larger extent of elitism. "This is how we do things, and if you do it differently we will look down on you and ridicule you". I believe this is a phenomenon which exists in almost all aspects of culture. It's usually spurred and upheld by people's immaturity and insecurity. I love how you are inclusive and welcoming, and emphasize that everyone has the right to do it the way they like.

The 30 minute wait is a huge tip. I learned this the hard way, but it's a big deal.

The last tip is too real. I already had a few images processed and exported in where, a day later, I just thought I needed a new pair of eyes and a brain. Looking back and back times again is the best tool in editing.

Happens to me most of the times... Exactly same thought pops in my mind... What ws i thinking...😂

One thing I like to do, that coincides with your waiting 30 minutes… I will the shrink the photo down to where the long edge takes up about 2 inches on my screen. I feel that helps you see an overcooked image, easier. In portraiture, if you’ve whitened the eyes or teeth to an unbelievable amount, it will stand out by doing this. It also helps seeing too much contrast/saturation/just about anything else in all styles of photography.

8:30 - "You're the boss here" - Once I finally realized that, after trying to mimic everyone's youtube guides, rather than viewed them as basic understanding guides, everything became clear and I was actually processing my own photos. This took me a few months for this to click, back when I first starting processing.

By far, the best photography channel on KZread. Thank you Simon!

The last tip is the best. What I do is after I finish processing I look at the photos on a different device like a 4K TV. Also as I learn more I keep coming back to the processed photos to apply what I've learned. Processing photos is a never ending journey for me. I remember when I first started working with LRC i would saturate the hell out of my photos and I used the clarity slider way too much. Now, I have leaned to control myself and use everything in moderation. Thanks Simon for another great video.

Yes! I keep folders on the cloud labeled "x photos in progress", take a break while they're uploading, and then look at them on my phone/any other screen to verify colors and edits.

You have an amazing commitment to service of others and judging from what I've leaned about you from your TED talk, you've spent much of your life in service to others and your country. Really inspires me to be better and achieve more. I have learned a lot about photography and editing from your channel. Photography is one of my outlets for mental health. I'm a recovering addict and hobbies like photography keep me going strong for well over three years! I'll be working on starting my own photography business in 2024, for now I'm building my portfolio. This is my second business. I did web design and SEO, made some money but wasn't happy. I'm going to follow my passions this time!

​@granthartley man I wish I could do photography full time but I feel like it's so hard to make it unless you're doing wedding photography. Even then the living salary seems subpar unless you're a top 1% photographer. Not sure if the data im looking at is way off base. I hope it is.

My friend, I am a 31 year old EDM fan from Orlando, who travels the US taking video and photos of his favorite artists. You are the best at explaining not only the what but the why of the Process in all your videos. Thank you for your contribution toward knowledge.

The 30 minute rest is real nugget. Often, I will revisit an image the next day.

I am impressed I think that you are the only one to actually include how you export a photo at the end of your workflow. It ties everything together, non-destructive editing and saving the image with the baked-in edits and the creating of a preset for future use. I know that these topics do get discussed, but many presenters consider the job done when that have made the final edit. Another thing that I like is that you simplify the way you edit by showing exactly what you have done and the reason why you have done it. This I find leave me in no doubt as to what I need to do.

Valuable information Simon. Love your teaching style also.

I stepped up to a 5D and need to know what lens filters are best for this camera for the same sort of shooting you do. Can you suggest what types of lens filters I should invest in. I'm at a point where I can afford good stuff now. I appreciate your wisdom and experience.

Just WOW. Although I'd used older versions of photoshop, I was still a bit lost when it came to lightroom. Had tried it a couple of times, but always gave up - I couldn't find what I was looking for, I didn't know what every slider etc. did. But 15 minutes with your video and I feel more confident using it. I actually immediately put it back to the start and went through your steps, not only editing a photo of mine as I watched, but I kept pausing so that I could create a written step by step guide to act as an aide memoire. Your videos are awesome and so easy to follow. Amazing teacher, thank you for taking the time to do these videos.

It is good you recognize we all do not use LR. I do use a similar processing scheme in Affinity Photo. It is good to see what you do as I admire your photos. Thank you.

Most of us have our own styles, but in the end, I think we all do almost the same thing; That last tip about deactivating the white balance on presets has absolutely valuable meaning. Thanks, Simon! 😊

As for waiting 30 minutes, I refer to that as my time to step back and then return with fresh eyes...so, I tell myself, "Fresh Eyes" as my cue to step away & return when my brain & eyes are ready. Crystal clear as ever. Thanks Simon. I’m not quite at the stage where my work is worthy of saving as a preset, but I am finding that creating multiple virtual copies of the same raw file to test different processing approaches really helps (with a 30 minute rule for each of course!)

Wait… best advice that I’ve ever heard. Can’t say how many times that I have gone back to visit the RAW image in Lightroom after some time and thought “I can’t believe I did that and even posted it somewhere”.

Simon, let me start by saying that I've been peeping on your tip videos for a few months and as an avid photographer from a line of photographers before me, you have been the highlight of my studies in upping my skills as a productive landscape/wildlife photographer. I want to thank you for giving me every possible answer to questions I've had about program workflow and file storage that I didn't know I needed until in the thick of it, and of course, your on the field experience is an added bonus. I can only imagine the hours of work you put into this channel and so for that, I thank you. ~Sedona from Washington

Hey. Learned a lot from this video. Just one thing to note. While facebook recommends 2048p on the long edge, this is not the case for instagram. They recommend 1080p width and max 1350p height (height depends on the ratio). I just tested today, and the file size on my posts with the recommended 1080 were more than 60 percent larger, and with better colors, than the ones with 2048p at the long edge (I did apply sharpening: screen, standard, to both).

Thanks again, Simon! I learned new things again. Finally I understand the difference between vibrance and saturation. Decreasing clarity for waterfalls, noted too! The 30 minutes tip is a golden one. This was taught to us at Uni: when writing papers/essays, take a break for a few hours or days, and then re-read what you have written. But I have never thought of using this "technique" for photo editing.

Your videos have really helped me in the last couple of months. Thank you so so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with those who need it.

What a great way to start my new year by watching this video. I'm a long-time LRC user but you've still taught "this old dog" some new tips. These are easy, simple-to-use procedures that will enhance any photo. My workflow is similar but probably not as organized as your's. Your recommendation of leaving the photo for at least 30 minutes is a great tip. Evaluating one's work with "fresh eyes" usually reveal changes that will improve the image. Waiting until next day is even better. I love your content and your friendly, concise delivery of information. I wish I could have gotten your advice and tips when I was starting this hobby 60 years ago. It would have saved me a great deal of time, frustration and money. My granddaughter (16) is interested in horse photography (she participates in English jumping). Photographing horses and jumpers is like "wildlife" photography with similar problems of lighting, freezing action, techniques and equipment. I'm going to recommend she watch your videos. You are a great teacher and she'll benefit from your experience. You explain the concepts much better than I can. Very best wishes for continuing success in 2024!

Excellent tutorial. As someone who has almost exclusively shot on film and done minimal editing, going to RAW has been daunting. This video is very helpful!

This is fantastic, seen so many videos of people trying to sell you their presets or their complicated work flow but yours is so simple and yet so effective. I've started using Topaz AI recently and it's awesome, glad to see you include it too, makes me feel like I am doing the right thing. Not that there is a right and wrong thing as it's all in the eye of the artist.

The ‘wait 30 mins’ tip is the best. My first attempts at editing were very saturated and ‘crunchy’. I’ve calmed down a little now!

This video is so good! I learned more in this video about Lightroom than I have in the last few months. Wish I found this earlier! Thanks for the great content 🙏🏽

I still like to use the Auto button in the develop module as a starting point. It usually gets me in the ballpark and I can still tweak the individual sliders until I'm satisfied. There are times though that Auto is WAY off and I have to start from scratch, but overall, it works for me.

I wanted to thank you, with sharing your work and insights, I was able to improve my photography skills and shooting more consistent pictures. 😊 For the tips, I agree for the 30 mins wait. With years, sometimes I want to come back to some old photos. But now, I'm always editing with the original and the edited one side by side to stay on tracks. :D
