    To be clear, they're about to change how SOME PEOPLE play D&D. They will not change the way I (how do put that in bold or increase font size for emphasis )play D&D. Except perhaps for cementing that I'm not playing any future versions of it. But then it's not changing the way I play it, unless not playing it counts as playing it. I've been playing 2nd edition for decades, and I'll continue to. For 5th, I have a stack of books now, I don't need any more, and in fact I'd like less. I may replace my stacks of 5th edition books with Tales of the Valiant. I have tiles and mats and tokens and minis, but we've been playing theater for the mind for decades. Everyone I and my friends and my kids usher into the hobby will also likely see that as normal. So the tradition will likely live, as it does at millions of tables. Also, microtransactions. Also, play a bunch of games. Also, will never be playing an rpg which has a subscription. I'm poor. If I wasn't, I have aging cars, aging house, aging me, kids with medical needs who are almost college/trade school age... I'll spring a couple hundred bucks for core books and then we're done, and I'll complain about the price in proportion to how closely the actual price gets to that $200 benchmark.

    OSR proved that maps are clutter and unnecessary for most ttrpg games. VTT & DnD is the death of their company not the game.

    Con: If everyone is paying more attention to a map with a clear emphasis on combat, is it a role-playing game anymore, or a battle game with a bit of roleplay?

    Well, I think it might be cool, but the whole point of TTRPG for me is the experience without technology - where we leave our phones and pick them up only when it's needed, for example when you need to look up a spell or ability. When everyone is in their laptops, I think that the magic in playing TTRPG is kind of lost

    Yeah....TheDnDbeyond requirement is a no-go for me. No third party or homebrew content really ruins any reason I'd play the VTT. I'd say I'd rather just stick to Foundry, but I'm half worried they're going to end up shutting it down to shovel people into playing the 3d VTT. We'll see.

    If they wanna have micro transactions then they should be STLs you can print as well. I would use this for the minor stuff during a game (suprise encounters the outside of a dungeon or abandon town) and then set up a table For the major stuff and use them in tandem .

    Will I use it? No never. I don’t use dnd beyond, for the simple reason that I don’t want a multi billion dollar company to know what I play, when I play or where I play.

    I wanna add something onto the part about asking questions for details. It's fine to mention details like cobwebs in the corner of a room if you wanna add some flavor, but use it to enhance whatever adjective's you are giving. Saying "there are cobwebs" sounds a lot more suspicious and like a spider-based encounter is going to happen than. "The house is filthy with cobwebs spun in corners." Things are suspicious when they are out of place or don't make sense, so give reasons for your mundane descriptions unless you want players to interrogate a man in his house about his web related activities.

    I started learning dnd a year ago and when I started DMing, maps and terrain were expensive. So I went digital. I’ve since played physical games and stuff but for myself, I still do digital maps. So I’m excited for a vtt on the website I already use to track everything.

    Come on man... there are tons of VTTs out the this isn't no competition as a pro, this is attempted monopoly as a con. Two subscriptions and microtransactions to play, plus book at 90$ a pop? Con. Also, all digital, you own nothing and they can take it all away instantly if they want to, HUGE CON.

    Let me stop and comment after the first sentence which just SCREAMS WITH DISHONESTY. "WotC is hoping to change how YOU play D&D forever." That is some Grade A TTRPG KZreadr outrage bait. Like the lies that people fabricated during the OGL bullshit. I unfollowed the people who did that (because I have self respect). I hope you are not going to follow in their path and MAKE SHIT UP and tell people to be OUTRAGED about it. For clicks and money. To be clear WotC is NEVER going to force anybody to stop playing the way Gary Gygax played, with pencils, paper and dice. And you pretending you can read minds and telling everybody they have an evil plan to force their new product on them is DISHONEST. I'm sure most TTRPG fans will suck up these lies, because they seem to love being lied to and demonstrating how we all hate <agreed upon outgroup>.

    I'm a little older and I find I don't really like RPG computer games much any more. I like TTRPG with friends in meatspace, and I like Online RPG's with a simple map and tokens kind of battlefield. I would like a simple, 3d-ified map system, but I am not interested in a system that makes my rolls, tracks damage, animates deaths, and looks like a video game. If it's all on the screen and not in my mind, the whole things seems like it's a videogame.

    I’ll certainly check it out - key points will be hardware requirements (not everyone in my group has a PC with a gaming quality video card), and cost - if all players need a subscription thats going to be a no-no. Million dollar questions will be a) will the 2D maps continue to be supported, b) is this going to be 5.5 rules/characters only, and c) will maps for published campaigns (which include 2D maps if bought digitally) be made available?

    The only thing WotC is changing for me, is on what I spend my money on going forward. For the online D&D VTT you'll need a high-end graphic card. You'll need to buy a 4090 for $1,800... oh and you'll need every player to also have an $1,800 gpu as well. The WotC long-term plan is to offer physical books initially and advertise the VTT as optional... and then in a few years they will no longer offer physical books and everything digital will be required to play. WotC is simply walking everyone down a marketing funnel. Menyr by Nog Studio is already a far better 3D VTT than D&D's version.

    I’m nervous about this VTT being monthly & what’s behind micro transactions. So I felt comfortable buying a different VTT: TaleSpire. It’s 25% off u til July 11th. Some pros: mod and community built terrain/buildings can now be accessed in the game itself. Easy interface. Dev actively working in it (even though small # of them). Really, just g watch some trailers. Some cons: the biggest one is you have to buy “seats” for players to join. These are also on discount right now. But once you buy the seats anybody can “sit” in it and use the free downloabke version of the game to sit and play in it. They even said that you can give this Guest Version player permission to build. Check out their FAQ. Last Con is their still working on Fog of War… it’s in Alpha, so there’s some things they’re still working out. But to me this is really polished and worth the ~$19 to try it out. Idk, figured I’d say something. I don’t a lot. This seemed to apply to a bunch of you and figured I’d throw this out there.

    The microtransactions and Fortnite style store will kill this I think.

  • @therealncast
    @therealncast11 сағат бұрын

    Not that I'm a fan of either, but your own example works against the idea you present - microtransactions and Fortnite-style stores are both alive and well. In fact, they're so popular that we can't stop hearing about both. I don't think either will kill the VTT, but how those elements are implemented will determine how tolerable it is for each person, in turn dictating how many people actually decide to switch from Foundry, Roll20 and others.

    I’m surprise that my biggest con didn’t even make your list. My biggest con is that it seems very difficult to quickly sketch out a new map or make changes to the existing one. When I use 2D maps, if the players go off map or somewhere I don’t have a map prepared for, I can usually just throw up a blank map and use the drawing tools to add in the relevant features. How long does it take to do that with a 3D VTT? Same thing if players alter the terrain or destroy a wall, it’s pretty easy to mark up a 2D map with those changes. I’m not sure how easily it can be done in 3D…
