    some amazon part. the MR-1 is a great kit from the start and is easily upgradable. there's a community of people modding them and making them incredibly capable machines. The 4th axis really steps the game up.

My nomad has collets and if was to spend the money on the MR-1 i would love to be able to just setup tool offsets once with holders rather than having to probe tool height every time i change a tool like i do now.

    Before retiring I owned and used a Tormach 770 for some of my custom jobs. After retiring I sold it thinking I wouldn't have much use for it anymore. Boy, was I wrong. Now I'm looking to buy a CNC mill with a slightly smaller footprint. These MR-1s look like they might fit my needs now. My CNC mill had all of the bells and whistles including a 4th axis but, II never had an automatic tool changer on my Tormach. To speed up all my tool changes I'd preset all of my tools in their respective holders to the exact same height. This way I didn't have to go through the hassle of changing tools and then re-indicating them with the top of my part. Do you pre-set the stick-out of your cutters in the same way? I ask because none of your tool changes used the automatic tool height gauge you have mounted on your mill.

  • @ryanwykes
    @ryanwykes6 ай бұрын

    Each tool has a known height in relation to a “master tool”. I have a G31 macro written so whenever I call for A tool I can also include G31 and it will auto measure the tool and save the offset

  • @ryanwykes

    That is precisely why I am asking for ideas as my notes say in this video.

  • @ThumbDr
    @ThumbDr6 ай бұрын

    @@ryanwykes my idea would Be to add a servo and a Gcode to have the tools covered completely when not in toolchange with a simple plastic cover, on toolchange open the shroud/cover, then if you have plain air on the spindle run a small radius around the tool with air and if not then just run a small radius of flood coolant around the tool to at least blast the chips off with coolant and then that way you shouldn’t have any wear on the taper surface finish and no chips stopping it from mating properly. Probably needs some trial and error I’m sure there a lot of problems that would arise that I’m not thinking of
