I love the first gen Acela. These trains hold a special place in my heart. The first highspeed train in the US, introduced the year I was born. A pioneer in the US highspeed rail industry. And I’m never gonna get to work on one. I bet if Amtrak really put some thought into it, they can try to extend the current sets’ lifespan by at least another 10 years. We’ve got commuter trains and subway cars that are nearing 40 years old. Why can’t the Acela go in for a full-on overhaul? Because Amtrak execs don’t know how to extend a train’s lifespan. Also, I wish this documentary showed more views inside the powercar’s machine room. I’ve only seen glimpses of it from first class, and can’t find any good pics of it online. My curiosity is driving me nuts.

Thanks for posting! I think this is a fantastic train addition for this countries vast yet slowly decaying railway network. Alstom is a beast when it comes to churning out these TGV and AGV behemoths. However, I have never found them to be very aesthetically pleasing when compared to the bullet trains of China and the N700 Shinkansen of Japan. They just seem to be sleeker and more appealing to the eye, but on the same note, attractiveness is not the main point behind high speed rail, and if the Acela functions as a legit HSR for the Northeast rail corridor, then I am content with that. After all, it's not about what I want but what works for the corridor and the countless hoards of passengers that need this long overdue addition to the corridor!

I am pleasantly surprised with the Acela train body. However, with respect to speed capability and access, Europe and Asia just put us to shame when it comes to high speed rail commuting. Not surprising, however, considering we are behind the curve when it comes to this form of transportation in general. I would think Amtrak could introduce a line that would run with the TGVs, AGVs, and Shinkansens of the industry. Who knows...time will tell. And as fascinating as the Hyperloop concept is, I prefer classic-style train bodies and systems that provide for greater capacity, as well as interior/architectural experiences. I pray to God luxury sleeper trains do not go the way of the wagon! Strange to say it, but as we become more and more dependent on speed and devices as a society, I can truly see this happening at one point. Apparently, speed is more important than experience to a great deal of folks. Hey, I am great with a combination of both.

The Frecciarossa in Italy rides with 300 kmh, the TGV in France rides with 320 kmh, the AVE in Spain rides with 300kmh, the ICE in Germany rides with 200-300 kmh, the IC2000 in Switzerland rides with 200 kmh, the Railjet in Austria rides with 230 kmh and the YHT in Turky rides with 250 kmh. But it only goes 80 mph most of the time. It goes 150 mph when there's no trains on its track. But sadly it is very rare for the tracks to not be crowded with Amtrak.

Yeah, in the UK most inter city trains are limited to 125mph, but they max out most of the time. There is a 186mph line between London and the channel tunnel to France, but the majority is 125. Amtrak could probably go faster if they wanted to.
