I cant believe how unbelievably rude, and heartless our world has become. I took this video at face value, for what it was intended to provide. An entertaining and educational look at the Acela. Since the dawn of social media, everyone has become the ultimate expert in criticising the honest effort of an individual with the lowest form of knuckle scraping language, that believe it or not, still offends. Kudos to the creator of this video. Im sure there will be many who will tell me to f... off in their illiterate righteous indignation. So be it. I will never return to this post. So have at it.

I actually have this documentary downloaded on my old iPod classic. Did this years ago.

I love the first gen Acela. These trains hold a special place in my heart. The first highspeed train in the US, introduced the year I was born. A pioneer in the US highspeed rail industry. And I’m never gonna get to work on one. I bet if Amtrak really put some thought into it, they can try to extend the current sets’ lifespan by at least another 10 years. We’ve got commuter trains and subway cars that are nearing 40 years old. Why can’t the Acela go in for a full-on overhaul? Because Amtrak execs don’t know how to extend a train’s lifespan. Also, I wish this documentary showed more views inside the powercar’s machine room. I’ve only seen glimpses of it from first class, and can’t find any good pics of it online. My curiosity is driving me nuts.

Thanks for posting! I think this is a fantastic train addition for this countries vast yet slowly decaying railway network. Alstom is a beast when it comes to churning out these TGV and AGV behemoths. However, I have never found them to be very aesthetically pleasing when compared to the bullet trains of China and the N700 Shinkansen of Japan. They just seem to be sleeker and more appealing to the eye, but on the same note, attractiveness is not the main point behind high speed rail, and if the Acela functions as a legit HSR for the Northeast rail corridor, then I am content with that. After all, it's not about what I want but what works for the corridor and the countless hoards of passengers that need this long overdue addition to the corridor!

I have to agree with Insta Goat, this was way over the top and pandered to the enth degree that I actually felt sympathetic for how hard they tried to play it up. The narrator was so personable and humble, never cracking edgy jokes or creating awkward moments.

The " host " is a former Maine Central brakeman who was hired to host the " Extreme Trains " series of tv programs. There are 10 shows. When they first announced it I thought great that would be interesting and I was working as a locomotive engineer at the time when I saw the first show. Your absolutely correct, this guy makes a mockery of every rail worker in the US and Canada.

+pete5668 On the social level, driving is good but not environment friendly. For me, train ride is way more enjoyable than driving a car for hours on end. However, I have to say, most trains (except the expensive Acela) are so slow in the States that sometimes I get bored.

+pete5668 Freedom to travel whenever and wherever you want is also part of my definition of enjoyment. If the States has a more extensive rail network, this freedom can be easily achieved. Also, in terms of speed, cars are not that great compared to the high speed trains (operating at about 350 km/h).

+pete5668 Driving allows freedom, i agree. I also prefer to drive my car in Germany on the Autobahn than using an ICE train. But the speed limit on US highways is so strict, that even the freedom you have in a car is no match to a train that drives at a speed over 200 km/h. In Germany this is different. While you could use the ICE driving at over 200 km/h for everything the missing speed limit on the Autobahn allows you to compete with the ICE. In the end, the ICE only wins with larger distances, but at long distances the airplane gets also better.

In a few months, the US is getting another high speed train with similar design in Florida called Brightline. Unlike Acela, it is going to be diesel-electric similar to HST 125. The max speed for Brightline is 125mph, the minimum speed in the US to be considered a high speed train.

I am in Illinois so nothing like this for us. enjoy your ride that we must pay for !

Born in France, The TGV is such a common sight that I am far less impressed than an American when I see a bullet train. I take it tons of time. They have double-deckers ones, low cost no frills ones, and the First Class Eurostar that gives out a free continental meal, wines and all you can drink coffee and tea.

Fast.... Don't make me laugh... It's lame and slow. Build a new real High Speed Line and link the cities at a proper way. Speeds up to 200 mp/h are common these day. Well... in Europe and Asia anyway.

Maarten, America has good train transportation in the south like Colombia. But the USA abandoned trains for cars and planes except for freight. Those trains are slow and old fashioned. But this still works pretty well. Much of the USA public either drives or flies. So the funding isn't there for modern passenger trains. And I miss them when in the USA. In UK I can take a train nearly any place and don't have to wait long.

At first I had a question... As a Canadian, but thinking for America, I wondered when they would see the Acela go South of D.C. However perhaps about 2/3 the way through the video came the answer: money, and the infrastructure cost. One day I would have liked to go from Montreal to Boston by rail, then do the Acela to D.C. and back, but it seems nobody goes Amtrak from Montreal to Boston because the Adirondack southbound arrives in Rensslaer N.Y.after the train from the west thaat goes through Rensslaer to Boston South. While it would not be impossible it would make no sense as one would have an overnight in Rensslaer, and possibly another in Boston before being able to get on the Acela south. If my guess is right that train comes from Chicago, and would have to return there. That seems like a nice add-on to the Acela Network, but possibly even better for going west might be from Penn Station or PHiladelphia to Chicago, via Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. At age 71, I have seen over 1 million Km. not to mention fly and drives in 3 languages in Canada, The U.S. and Dominican Republic. But I no longer drive due to health issues. Maybe, in time I will have the chance when I can afford it to do the Acela ride. ... And maybe then, Amtrak will have opened an Acela route south to Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami.

Fun fact: The Glacier Express train, which drives through the Swiss Alps, is with a maximum speed of 40 mph the slowest high speed train in the world :)

As much as I love my country, I'm always embarrassed with the transportation system here. Germany has the Autobahn while we have freeways and bridges that never allow free flowing. Japan and Europe has the best HST's while we only have 150mph top speed only allowed in pockets of a corner system in the entire country. We still have primitive looking local buses and subways. Not nearly as attractive as other countries who fully embrace the ideas of modernizing. It just seems while all other countries are working hard to keep ahead of the curve, the most powerful nation is still ten to twenty years behind the 21st century. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what it would be if the country was run by corporation instead of the bureaucratic system.

American car company and bus CONSPIRED along with interstate battery's, michellin tires and oil Co's to kill rail in the 1930's . they succeded . we had a vast rail network from trolly's to street cars, to subways and commuter rail and passanger rail. and they killed most of it off. by buying the backrupting rail and then shutting it down and converting it to buses, which use guess what ? gasoline, batteries, tires !!!!

Nelsido Mejia Don’t be embarrassed by how fast our train can go, 150 mph is still plenty fast. And consider that the train has been tested at speeds up to 165 mph, so there’s no way that the Acela isn’t fast

Wait till 2021 when the Acela is retired :( but luckily for something way better though :)

Preparations are being made to add Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Atlanta, and New Orleans.....in the distant future. All of the Norfolk-Southern mainline from Washington to Atlanta is being improved to handle high speed rail. Curves are being taken out, bridges replaced to higher standards, crossings removed, etc. There's still tons of work left before we'll see it happen, if it ever does.

This is the reason why our nation doesn't need high speed rail. We already have this as an alternative

When was this made? I'm pretty sure the cities sprinter locomotives, AEM-7's, HHP-8's, DDA40X's, and 3rd Generation GTEL's are higher in power than the acela powercars.

Uh Matt for the TGV its 188mph not 190mph, failed calculation on your part there.

This would have taken 3-4 hours on the CRH380

Amtrak should instead have a contract with the Japanese Shinkansen. But that would be expensive, but more faster, safest, and maybe the best.

Nice documentary, but unfortunately it's incomplete. What about the special signalling high speed tracks need & what about the remote traincontrol systems...??? These Amtrak-trains looklike copies from the European TGV-trains. However in Europe (especially in France) such TGV-trains do have special tracksignalling, because riding at 200 MpH you are hardly able to distinguish a red sign from a green one. It also means that such trains carry computerized systems that could influence speed whenever it needs to and that system could remotely be operated by someone at the trackcontroll centre.

You see it would be very difficult to get a high speed network anywhere outside a densely populated area like the Northeast Corridor. Areas like that are the only places Amtrak actually makes any revenue. Everywhere else they lose money and they have only survived on subsidiaries. Also, the Northeast corridor is the only place Amtrak actually owns it's own tracks. Everywhere else they have to use the lines of the other railroad companies. They would need a lot of money to build the tens of thousands of miles of track. Even if they received investment or grants to build their own tracks, they're probably still not going to make money. As far as cross country trips go, most people are going to choose to drive or take a plane. The latter is just as expensive if not less for a ticket. I personally prefer cross country road trips myself. However I do like the idea of taking a train, and not some high speed train to get across the country, just enjoy the few days on a hotel on wheels. Kind of like Santa Fe's old Super Chief which was probably the pinnacle of cross country rail travel. Sometimes I wonder what a trip on that would be like. It just doesn't seem economical for something like that to happen at this point in time.

In China they go 190 miles an hour ...but 150 is at least a start...

ppkrex :) I'm not the one who is confused. I never mentioned the 'Western World'. If you look at the link you posted concerning the 'Western Hemisphere', everything on that projection is the Western Hemisphere...as you can see, its not based on continents as you claim, but is mealy one half of the Earth which is split at London where the Prime Meridian crosses. Hence most of England, Spain, all of Iceland, Scotland, Portugal and alot of Western Africa is part of the Western Hemisphere along with North and South America. Ergo, the Western Hemisphere is not ONLY North and South America. I know for some people the New World, Old World, Western World and Western Hemisphere can be confusing concepts, however you only have to read the second paragraph of your link on the Western Hemisphere from Wikipedia.

It only takes 6 & 1/2 hours to drive from DC to Boston by car. So this train doesn't save any time
