I worked for the Magma Copper mine that owned the line and the train that was used to film the train robbery with George Peppard and Eli Wallach. I road that line several times and the steam engine when they occasionally run it.

My dad saw this on its original presentation, three projectors. It was the first time he experienced stereo sound and that amazed him more than the three protections. He was looking through all his life for a revival screening to no avail.

Without being projected onto a curved screen, presenting an image as warped as this really is unnecessary

The restoration work on the film is not noticeable. I remember Cinerama and the quality of the images and color was spectacular. As far as the screen goes, it was much wider and more curved than what is shown in these videos.

Wonderful work! I wish I had your expertise. It's fabulous to see our film history being restored and preserved! This should be a government sponsored profession! In my eyes, you're a god! Can 2001 in Smilebox with a restored soundtrack and accurate color palate be far behind?

My family and friends have used Cinerama lines for decades, such as , "Eight legs.........eight legs," for art lectures. For a late arrival it is, "Dick still has hope of getting Toni in the show................but Dick is wrong!" We can shorten that to "Dick still has hope of getting Toni in the show..." and we get the full meaning. We went on tour of Christian Radich when it visited our port. I have a super warm doorman uniform bought for a Cinerama theatre in 1960 as well as posters and lots of programs. I make it a point of visiting one time three strip theatres. We went to Dayton regularily for New Neon Movie showings. Also enjoyed the tour with digital projection when it visited Music Hall in Detroit, although the traces of the three booths had vanished in renovations by that time.

The Germans did, in fact, have helicopters in 1942 because some were used to evacuate wounded from pockets on the Eastern Front. But not as small as the one in WED.

I just downloaded a poor 480p of this movie which I thought looked interesting...haven't seen it yet but a SmileBox version would be a vast improvement. CINERAMA released movies in this format when it was shown it could be done with a single lens. "Mad World" was the first with this process. 70MM films could be shown on a curved screen and looked just as spectacular as CINERAMA.

As of 1963 with the release of Mad World, Ultra Panavision films played on the existing Cinerama screens and billed themselves as being “ in Cinerama” although not the true Cinerama as you note. Besides Mad World, films such as Ice Station Zebra, 2001, Grand Prix, Khartoum, Krakatoa ( east of Java) were all “ in Cinerama”.

I was a young merchant seaman when I saw this in New Zealand, around 1962. Auckland, I think. It was an awesome movie! Never forgotten. Cinerama was a brilliant process. I saw How the West Was Won in Sydney in 1962 also and sadly, that was the last Cinerama movie. There were more so-called Cinerama movies but they were no such thing! Ultra Panavision 70 and such. Cinerama had so much potential, it is sadly missed!

Time, commitment, availability of equipment, vendors and ALL the rest. No wonder why these restoration projects and their finished products are most cost prohibitive and closely © held. 🎉
