My dad saw this on its original presentation, three projectors. It was the first time he experienced stereo sound and that amazed him more than the three protections. He was looking through all his life for a revival screening to no avail.

I was a kid when I saw "This is Cinerama" at the Paris Empire theater in 1955, it was fabulous. Later I have seen all others real Cinerama film in the same theater (but Brothers Grimm). Later films in 70mm Ultra Panvision didn't brought the "Cineram effect" because of insufficient shooting angle (which was much less than the needed 146°). I have copies of the Cinerama films which have been edited on blu ray, but my 55" flat screen is far too small to benefit of the "Cinerama effect"

My family and friends have used Cinerama lines for decades, such as , "Eight legs.........eight legs," for art lectures. For a late arrival it is, "Dick still has hope of getting Toni in the show................but Dick is wrong!" We can shorten that to "Dick still has hope of getting Toni in the show..." and we get the full meaning. We went on tour of Christian Radich when it visited our port. I have a super warm doorman uniform bought for a Cinerama theatre in 1960 as well as posters and lots of programs. I make it a point of visiting one time three strip theatres. We went to Dayton regularily for New Neon Movie showings. Also enjoyed the tour with digital projection when it visited Music Hall in Detroit, although the traces of the three booths had vanished in renovations by that time.

There was a film, It was one of John Wayne's first. He was very young in it. I think it was called ,"The Big Trees", but not sure .It was filmed in ultra wide screen 70mm stock film. Does Cinerama have something to do with that movie? I only saw it once on Cable TV but haven't been able to find it since. Love to see it again.

Called "The Big Trail". Not a Cinerama production.

The Big Trail (1930) was John Wayne's first starring role in a feature film. It was shot in Fox Granduer - an early widescreen format. The image ratio was 2.13:1 - not as wide as later formats like Cinerama (2.59:1) or Ultra Panavision (2.76:1). The Big Trail was a box office flop, partly because cinemas had only recently converted to sound and owners were not ready to invest more cash into converting to widescreen. Two versions of the movie were filmed and released - 35mm and 70mm - adding costs to an already expensive production. The worsening Great Depression meant it would not make its money back. The Big Trail has been restored and released on Bluray and DVD (both 35mm and 70mm versions). Btw, once "This is Cinerama" became a massive hit in the 1950's, studios scrambled to get widescreen features into production. They dusted off the Mitchell FC 70mm cameras built for Fox Granduer more than 20 years earlier and retooled them for new widesreen formats. Oh, and John Wayne did go on to appear in a Cinerama production - How the West Was Won (1963) - one of only two 3-strip Cinerama feature films ever made.

@@jonny_sparks Cleopatra was considered to be shot in three strip. Brothers Grimm ear worm has bothered me for 60 years after seeing it once.

@@billjensen5878 I recall reading they shot some footage for Cleopatra in three strip before switching to Todd-AO. Maybe for the best - Cleopatra cost a fortune even without the expense of three strip Cinerama. For many years, Brothers Grimm three strip was believed to be lost . Then a collector in Australia donated a set of Cinerama reels he acquired back in the day. In April 2012, this print was shown in Bradford, England - the first public screening in three-strip for several decades. I was lucky enough to see it - the first time I watched this movie in any format. In 2022, TWWOTBG was released on Blu-ray after a great restoration job - it looks stunning. This edition includes a "Smilebox" version which simulates Cinerama - quite effective when projected.

@@in70mm Hello. Are you referring to the film, curved screens, or both? I'd love to see this in its original format, but I'm unaware of any Cinerama (or other) theaters with curved screens. As I'm a layperson, would you kindly educate me? Thank you.

@@karlhungus5554 Besides the Cinerama theater in Bradford, England, there is also the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. Neither is currently open because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but both will probably be operational later this year (i.e., 2021). Both will probably show the forthcoming digitally restored version of The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, most likely with some sort of digital projection I would guess. The Cinerama Dome in Hollywood is mainly used for non-Cinerama films, and to show Cinerama the special screen has to be manually re-installed, so Cinerama showings there are only on special occasions. You can roughly approximate the Cinerama experience at home using a curved screen monitor or a curved projection screen, though it's not easy to get anything as deeply curved as a true Cinerama screen. For an example of Cinerama at home see kzread.info/dash/bejne/o3yo2tB9gLyTp6g.html As shown that would reproduce the experience of watching a Cinerama movie from the back of the cinema.
