Feeling Good with Dr. David Burns

Feeling Good with Dr. David Burns

Dr. David Burns is the author of Feeling Good, Feeling Great, and other books that have sold more than 6 million copies. He was a pioneer in the development of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and has developed a new approach called TEAM, which stands for: Testing, Empathy, Agenda Setting and Methods. TEAM addresses the shortcomings in classical CBT, and is based on the notion that motivation influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions just as much as our thoughts and beliefs. Dr. Burns has developed more than 100 mood boosting techniques drawn from more than 15 schools of therapy, and believes that TEAM is as revolutionary as CBT was decades ago.

I've had patients tell me that it is because of their free will that they have the right to commit suicide. They believe they have it, therefore it would be unfair for someone to prevent them from exercising it. They say other people should not try to minimize their own pain by preventing them from committing suicide. I argue that we don't have completely free will. For example, humans, being social beings, are almost always factoring in the social impacts or attachments to others their decisions will have, as evidenced by guilt. Also, did we get to pick our parents, or the language we speak, or how intelligent we are? The list goes on. Indeed, it is a red herring, but it's an interesting clinical point in the case of patients like I've encountered.

I'm so sorry that the podcast was not helpful for you and that you actually felt worse. The methods I've developed can be even more helpful for people with very few resources, so I hope you'll keep listening for more stories and maybe find some approaches that will be helpful to you. Today we are recording a podcast on self-esteem, which should be published on August 26, 2024. If you are in the States, you could also take a free ride on the new Feeling Great App! There are tons of free resources on my website "feelinggood.com"

10:30 The answers to the questions ( of fairness, of millionaires having more money to afford quality healthcare etc....} cannot be fully answered by CBT prniciples alone. One requires a good background in economic principles . A good place to look is reading the book written by Jay W Richards .It is called " Money Greed and God " Also read the books by MIlton friedman " Choosing to be free " . The answers are there if not fully but to a great extent.

Right you are! Much of the world's suffering results from the belief that we are inherently better than many other people and that we are the victims of their bad behavior, without examining our own role in the problem.

Also, I've recently started talking to someone who has borderline personality disorder, they're a really nice person but they do struggle a lot interpersonally. Are there any tips you suggest so I can make them feel more comfortable and open? I think you said finding the truth in what people are saying and not being defensive are the best techniques for these types of situations.
