In The Hitchhiker's Guide, a millions-years-old robot has lost all functionality but one. Whenever a human speaks to it, it replies, "I believe you." Stuck on a corner in a large city, there's always a line around the block waiting to unburden their hearts. Humorous yet speaking to a basic human need. Donna Sue's take is warmer.

Love your channel! I'm self-employed, so only a little applies directly to me. But you are righteous! I've seen many of these things go on within organizations I deal with. However, a large proportion of people proportion of people work at will, without contracts. And of those, a very large number are utterly ignorant of recourse when an employer's demands are unfair. I hope you keep spreading the word.

Employer-sponsored health insurance is a scam. No one should have to work to get health insurance. Employer-sponsored health insurance keeps people in jobs they don’t want to be in and makes it harder for them to take risks. Government-sponsored or private health insurance should be the norm so we aren’t relying on our employers for insurance.

My mom was an Olympian ('36 Berlin), and from the 1st Olympics televised in the US (Squaw Valley '60) our whole family watched every televised minute. The last time my mom and I watched together was 2012 (London). She died 2 months later.

Company events without accommodating everyone’s dietary needs. I’ve been required to attend multiple company retreats out of state. My employer asked for dietary restrictions, and I told them months in advance and offered to help with planning so they could accommodate my needs. Then when I get to the event, there is nothing for me to eat. Not everyone eats meat or animal products or gluten or nuts. It’s a scam that companies demand attendance to these events, and then some people are left with literally zero options for food. Either have universally accommodating food options or don’t make events mandatory if you have no intention of feeding everyone fairly.

I would add another one. After working in a company for 10 years and acquiring a lot of knowledge about the business I am leaving to work remotely in a different country due to family reasons while keeping exactly the same job . They are adjusting my salary down to “match” with the market where I live, although the offer is actualy below market value. Reduction is about 30%. Does this feel right after 10 years of service? It feels like a slap in a face.

Always ON. When you come to the office, you do sit at the table with anyone seeing you. Or do you hide under the table? That's ridiculous how some people forget that they are still within the work environment. If the company or manager expects you to turn your camera on, you have to do it. There are tons of reasons why it's more beneficial to have the camera on. But that's not even for a discussion.

Don't ever waste a chamber to go hang out with your father. You just don't know how long you will have the privilege to do it. I would give away everything I own. I would beg, borrow and steal to see mine again for even 30 seconds! Take the time! You'll never see an epitaph of somebody who died that suits they regretted spending so much time with the people they love. You can ALWAYS work more. But you can't get that time back!!

Having worked in manufacturing; I can see the point of a certain level of dress code (things like no baggy pants/shirts, stud earrings only, no watches/bracelets/rings, things like that). Machinery does like to grab loose/dangling things and doesn't much care if you're attached. So it becomes a safety issue. But if you are requiring a uniform or certain level of dress for "presentation" purposes (especially if it's beyond business casual or maybe a basic suite/woman's equivalent [I'm a guy, I have a hard enough time with mens fasion I don't know how the ladies do it]) then it should either be provided by the company or there should be a set, inflation adjusted, stipend attached to the position for the purchase. Additionally, if the company provides clothing there should be enough provided of both hot and cold weather uniforms and accessories to get the worker through an entire work week plus extra (in case of overtime, damage, spills, etc). No more of this you get two, one in the wash and one wearing, and if you want more you have to buy them BS.

Told by a manager that not a single person employed there would take any initiative, while in the handbook, posted all over the building and in group "collective meetings", told to not think, not show any initiative, not to stray from the letters of SOP. I said, kinda killed initiative, reckon? I got let go the following day, lack of work as the reason, finding out they hired someone else to fill the position less than 24 hrs later thru the same temp agency I worked for. Speaking the obvious apparently wasn't SOP either.

An obvious mismatch between US and UK. Here in the UK, a normal working day is 9am to 5.30pm! And there is generally pressure to keep lunch breaks to 30 minutes!

Dealt with this at my previous job....some people refused to put it on their personal phones, with no compensation. COO tried to threaten them by saying "If you don't want to put the work apps on your phone then maybe you don't want to work here" Company lawyer (who was also the owner's daughter) had to pull him aside and explain that he literally set the company up for lawsuits by every person that would get let go in the near future.

I definitely see the value in face to face meetings whether in person or via video calls. However... I would not demand that anyone turn their camera on. For ages I would often struggle with having my camera on for a Teams call with many attendees. My brain would go into overdrive, i would get visual migraines, and I would struggle to digest anything that was being said. Fast forward... I recently found out that i have autism plus another neurodevelopmental disorder, both of which affect my sensory processing. I communicated this to work and yet they still make passive aggressive comments about me having my camera off. They think I'm just taking the piss. People really need to educate themselves.
