As someone who rented from American Lease before its no surprise they have that much money to do this like things like this. After all, they are one of the many predatory taxi leasing companies out there. This is one of the reasons David Do wanted drivers to have their own vehicles though he is also another issue w/ the TLC industry. This will most likely blow up in American Lease's faces as those cars are known to have problems and they will definitely need to become a real car company to fix it. I will be impressed if they can pull off such a feat especially since they couldn't repair the basic taxis they were renting out to us.
@AutoMarketplace13 күн бұрын
When you use the term “predatory” what’s your assumption of American Lease’s underlying profit margins? Can shed more technical light on this if you want. In terms of their customer service being bad, yes many drivers haven’t had the greatest experience.
@impulsivez482512 күн бұрын
@@AutoMarketplace on top of their customer service being absolutely horrible, American lease rents out vehicles that are severely under maintained. I rented a Hyundai Elantra from them before and the vehicle was in such poor condition that it could not be worth more than $5,000. they charge $250 a week for this vehicle, which yes also includes insurance coverage but still does not justify the cost of the rental. For $1,000 a month, I was driving a vehicle that has suspension problems, tires that were over inflated which could have led to a crash, and engine issues. they do not hire real mechanics as they got some in-house workers that are probably paid minimum wage to lift it up and say everything is fine when everything was in fact not fine. The mechanic put the wrong oil filter which led oil to leak out of the engine, The suspension was blown out which caused it to bottom out on any little bump also leading to bad ratings on Uber, and the engine mounts were not secured so the engine actually fell out when I was driving it! No kidding, they had to bring a tow truck to tow their vehicle and give me a new one! I own a Tesla and my car payments are less than 2 weeks payment on the rental so you could imagine how much profit there are making from renting out vehicles that are clearly dangerous. they don't put money into the vehicles in their fleet hoping at the driver will put out their own money since they need the vehicle to work, putting them in a predatory situation. I also cannot forget that the headlamp wiring was also taped together instead of properly fixed which cause the headlight to sometimes turn off while driving, which also led to a ticket that I had to get dismissed! The bumper as well was another issue, being not fully secured it flew off on the highway! All of the things I'm saying may sound outrageous but they have happened and they even questioned me when the vehicle came in worse condition because of their lack of maintenance! I left a lengthy review years back on Google which you can probably find. David Do did help...SORT OF? When he allowed drivers to get their own vehicle and avoid these companies but he should have allow drivers to purchase at least hybrids or plug in hybrids. If they want to keep the green-status-quo they could have done this to keep drivers with practical vehicles because there is not enough infrastructure available to have thousands of more commercial electric vehicle drivers using them. TLC made their cut from electric vehicle registrations but did not put forth the infrastructure required for the drivers to fully utilize their vehicle. It is like moving from one really bad situation to one slightly less bad situation instead of solving the problem outright.
@AutoMarketplace12 күн бұрын
@@impulsivez4825 as you know by releasing all the new vehicle licenses the market is now oversaturated (i.e. lockouts) with too many drivers/vehicles, chasing a limited amount of trips (was a big mistake by TLC in retrospect and they are facing a lawsuit, as you might know). It seems like you had a very genuinely terrible experience, and sorry to hear that. The underlying group margin on American Lease will be 15% to 20% (maximum) and more likely 5% to 10% because of insurance and *depreciation*. In your comments you're not speaking about depreciation as an expense. Glad to hear you're happy about getting a Tesla, but (if we''re being honest) wait until Year 3, 4, 5 in the NYC TLC business. If you get into a fender bender, if a part needs replacing and you have to wait 4-8 weeks, battery degradation etc that will not be a good experience. When the car is new, everything will work amazing. Tesla (right now) is not a good vehicle for NYC TLC / taxi. Many drivers, unfortunately, will learn this the hard way. It's not a good car because it costs too much and not meant for NYC commercial Uber / taxi use (personal use it's probably great). How much did you purchase your Tesla for? Interest rate? Do you have full coverage insurance? As you might know, commercial comp & collision is not even available for TLC-plated Teslas, only a $5,000 deductible policy which is borderline not even really insurance. Getting back to this bet on Fiskers, if American Lease operates in the way you describe with these EVs, the bet will blow up, no doubt about it. That would surprise us. They've been in the NYC TLC leasing business for ~15-20 years. They would not bet $45+ million, risk the company and not have deeply thought about a plan. The Green Rides mandate is driving this and they are buying these cars at a fire sale price, it doesn't get better than this. To conclude though, it's clear they need to improve how they operate in multiple ways (glad you shared your experience and I hope they read your comment), but you're probably still overestimating their profits.
