As we, and many on social media, have been covering, NYC for-hire transportation (TLC) drivers are facing Uber “lockouts”. The term “lockout” is TLC slang for a situation where Uber (or Lyft) limits the ability for a driver to go online. Given, Uber and Lyft, combined, have an over 80% NYC trip market share, this is impacting a lot of drivers.

This is honestly very humiliating. They're treating us like children, having us chase an ice cream truck. "hey go here if you wanna work. It's busy here.... AHH! It ain't busy anymore. We're kicking you out. Now go over there ... AHH! Sorry, I know you drove all those blocks to this area but it's not busy anymore" WTF!! we have car notes, insurance, bills that are due!!

Hopefully the rules change soon or it likely be more of the same (might even get worse in August).

Yes, that can still happen. In reality it’s impossible to truly know the mechanics without knowing how the algorithm is working
It would be good to get rid of this stupid utilization rate. It’s such a pain in the ass and it interferes with fair competition in the marketplace. Besides if Uber and Lyft can limit ability to go online - the utilization rate becomes meaningless, because it doesn’t take into account the actual time the driver is working, but only the time the driver is officially online - which defies the purpose of the utilization rate rule.

Capping the license plates is the only viable option. But this industry is super saturated a long time ago, why would TLC offer EV plates? Because they are taking money under the table!

Increasing the Driver licensing fees. Is ridiculous… TLC has loss their function a long time ago. They act as a “cash cow “ for the City!
So if i go on vacation for a couple weeks i may be on a wait list to log back in when i get back?

Don’t think a couple of weeks will put you on the waitlist, but if you’re inactive for more than a month maybe that has an impact. Just a best guess 👍
They should cap. Have a waitlist. As a tlc driver retires, you hire a new one. Or do a 1-5% increase every year.

Right now, from our understanding, it’s 6+ months for both Uber and Lyft NYC. That can change if TLC rules change though.
Think about creating a Drivers' Own Platform(DOP) and say goodbye to the ridesharing monopolists

Yes, agree this is an idea we’ve spoken about and we think this is the next iteration of “rideshare”. Some sort of token / Web3 blockchain platform will likely enable this where both drivers *and* passengers own the majority of the network. Many people forget the passenger owning a part of the network is also very important. This is something we’re tracking and might even pursue 👍

Agree this was a long video and we always try to aim to be short and concise. Hopefully the table of contents helped people listening skip around. Ultimately this is a very complex and consequential topic so really wanted to fully explain it. Lot of misinformation and disinformation out there. However, always good to get feedback and we’ll try better to be more concise 👍
It is a game played by Ride share. If I am out there in the street for 10 hrs and allowed to go online for five hrs only? Does five hours represent total hours that a driver wait to get a job. I dont get it. Change the rule.

Only time that counts is when you’re logged into the app ✅. Lockouts is a way for Uber to increase how busy a driver is when they are allowed to be logged in. We think TLC should get rid of UR and enforce TLC vehicle / driver license supply limits

If rules are not changed, yes unfortunately. Not a hard and fast rule, but generally yes. Some people might claim they can game the waitlist via EV, WAV or UberBlack but we’re not seeing that anymore
Unbelievably good job. Even if instinctually it’s been all evident, still unbelievable their games behind the scenes and fooling everyone….doom loop…love it…it’s exactly what I explained recently few days ago to the head of the NYTWA in their set zoom meeting gathering…hopefully TLC doesn’t get scammed braking the UR responsibilities and create a monopoly Uber dreams for.

That would be a great idea. Especially for Uber deactivated drivers as myself with them taking more market share.
Can someone please work on an app that works with Uber and Lyft apps, where the app automatically takes us offline one app once pinged from the alternative app. (Was that clear?)

It’s a good idea. Is that so you don’t have to cancel a request from the other app? Note, NYC operates on industrywide utilization for Uber and Lyft, so in terms of that metric it’s actually not necessary. However, acceptance rate / cancellation rate still relevant to have that functionality. Hopefully, someone will see your comment and start working on it !

I’m nyc Uber only driver since 7-8 years.I can work only nights about 6 hours per shift 5 days per week. It’s frustrating to be taken off the app during the my limited time. This utilizeshun mambo jumbo most go,since this is a great instrument for Uber force us to position the drivers wher they want us to be. Uber and lift should be forced to cap there driver onboarding . New drivers should be on waitlist till the threshold demands is…simple!!!

Agree re utilization rate (UR) 👍 TLC is at fault for not regulating for-hire vehicle supply better (as you know, just allowed the addition of 10k+ FHVs) and driver licensing (over 180,000+ TLC licensed drivers now). If they regulate supply better at the licensing level, Uber / Lyft will be less able to abuse the system (lockouts)
