Sir I'm currently doing my STCW training to get a seaman's book and id. I don't have any experience on boating or sailing but my dream is working on a yacht as a deckhand. Is there any other trainings that I must get as well?
I'm feeling driven after this video
Hello, my friend. I'm glad to see you and your new video. You have the right message for those in the yachting industry. Thanks for your work.
Thanks Alex. You are a good example of how to progress quickly in this industry!
Best motivational video, push yourself to the limit! Thanks matt for your videos, i am willing to put myself in the industry thanks to you! Quick questions, no worries if you dont want to answer it. You talked about your salary but you didnt talk about tips. Did you ever received any? Is it too far stretched for a deckhand to earn 4k a month just from tips? You also talked about rotation, when you are off are you still getting paid? Either way i cant thank you enough to make this channel and help others to push higher and not to settle. I am convinced 100% that you are going to help someone in here, thats very honorable from you, keep going matt!!
Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. Yes, I have received some tips. On the right charter yacht, you could get an extra 3,000 Euros per week whilst chartering. Even a modestly busy summer season with six weeks of charter could therefore net you 18,000 Euros. Throw in a couple more weeks over the summer and some weeks during the Caribbean season and you'd double that for an average of an extra 3,000 Euros per month across the year on top of your salary. An extra 4,000 Euros per month is possible, but pushing it. Just be warned that trying to do this over the long term may not be sustainable. Not all yachts charter, and some yachts that are available for charter may not do so that much. You must therefore get on the right yacht, which is where my career focus comes in. Competition for jobs on these yachts is high, so you need to make yourself more employable than everyone else. As for rotation, you should be paid every month even though you're there half the time. Your monthly salary may just be a bit less than if you didn't have rotation. Wishing you all the best with your yachting career!
Matthew that outlines the focus that someone with a genuine eye for a career needs, rather than getting into the 'yachtie' attitude, which is fine, but no way to drive a career. Thank you for sharing your hard earned wisdom, and I hope that the Academy is finalised soon,
I went from Deck on a 125' to captain of a 75' trawler in just over 2 yrs. Got my 500 ticket, then hired on as 1st officer on a 175' crew boat in the Gulf of Mexico for 3 yrs then moved to captain. I eventually retired with 3000 ticket having spent 23 yrs as capt in a 34 yr span. Things may have changed nowadays.
A great example of how to make the most of an opportunity! Thanks for sharing, @NautiGrandpa.
Happy to hear from you, it never gets old. Always a joy to see your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Frank. I hope all is well with you.
Really looking out for and teaching others. Thank you for all you do. Got my first job 2 weeks ago. They were surprised at what I knew, much of which I learned from you!
Congratulations! Wishing you all the best for your first season.
Hi matt I have dm'd you on Instagram about a career in yachting. It would be great to chat with you.
Thanks Theo. I just replied to your message.
👍✅ Well explained Matt 👏
Thanks @paratyshow. I hope all is well with you.
Are you playing your superyacht career in deckhand mode or officer mode?
I am 41 and in the process to get my STCW. It's never to late I guess for a change. Congratulations indeed on your videos. Personally I thank you because you are able to be very clear and professional with your own style of lightness and sympathy. I'm definitely going to watch them all.
Hello, and thanks for your comment. Wishing you all the best with the STCW qualifications. Please don't be discouraged by my video about the age limit for getting started. Just head to the comments of that video for people who joined the industry later in life and still made a great success of it.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht I really appreciate it ! Good luck with your project and everything you do 👌🏻
Hi Matt, you mentioned when looking for work arriving in port at the right time of year is important, can you advise when this would be for Antibes, Palma, Fort Lauderdale?
Hi Nick. From March/April for the Mediterranean season, and from October/November for the Caribbean season.
Hi Matthew! Thanks for putting out this video, I really appreciate your content. I wanted to ask when you thought is the best time for green crew to go to dock walking and looking for work. I went to Antibes last year around late March and left early May. Unfortunately, I didn't have the funds to continue the search and came back to Australia. Thanks again and hope you're having a good summer
Hello, and thank you for commenting. It sounds like you were there at the perfect time, and I'm sorry to hear that you didn't manage to find a job. Are you going to try again next year?
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Yes! I can't go this season but am building up my CV with local work here in Australia. It's not superyacht work but more boating (shipyard, party boat charters etc) and also some lifeguard work. Thanks for all of your previous videos as well, they definitely helped in my preparation for last year and I would've been in a much worse situation without your content. I still feel confident that I can make my entry into the superyachts
@hudsonspooner6427 My pleasure 😊. It sounds like you're getting some good, relevant experience to make yourself more employable next year. You should also keep an eye out for any jobs on superyachts based in Australia. I see adverts for those jobs every so often.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thanks! I'll keep looking here too
and how do weekends and holidays work?
As a boat captain that does charters in southern Florida my advice would be to just start jumping on boats for work and it will evolve automatically as long as you keep showing up and put in those dog tired hours … get salty
Hi Matt,i am really quiet worry, how are you, hope u r healthy and happy man, personally i appreciate your useful videos anyways thank you braf,God bless you
Thank you for your concern, but all is well 😊.
is that what it sounds like to non mechanics? also, I really like Mathew's mustache the most!
Happy birthday! 🥂
Same on cruise ships. And of course if you say something about it they ll call you lazy, you cannot start complaining, because this extra working hours happens to often. If it is not ok for you as european, they ll find somebody from Asia who s fighting for his family and for whom the salary seems to be big. It could be a nice life on ships, but, they do their calculations. At the end of the day, the proof is they only care about money. 22 hours of work, 20, 19...and so on. After few months it doesn t metter if you have few more hours to rest, you re already burned. Why so upset? Because I would love to continue working on yachts or even cruise ships, I love the Sea, the travelling, the job...Problem is the time. It is unacceptable to work so hard with no weekend, and for so many hours per day. We all know it is pretty close to slavery. This will not change soon, we are not in the position to really do something.
Talks waaaaayyyyy too much
Thanks for your feedback.
Thanks for sharing, it is useful!
Hello Matt! I'm 35 years old and want to change careers and become a superyacht captain. Is this feasible?
Yes, it's certainly possible! I presume that you're concerned about age, so take a look in the comments section of this video to read about the experiences of others who've done the same: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pa2Ay9ezYdjKqto.html The first thing to do is just get started. Once you get a bit of experience you'll then be able to decide what sort of yachts you prefer working on. If it's something smaller (under 200GT) then you could potentially reach the role of captain in just a few years. Larger yachts will require you to get more experience and qualifications, but you can still progress quickly if you put your mind to it. I push Academy members to be eligible for the role of first mate on yachts under 500GT in as little as 2 years, and 2nd officer on larger yachts up to 3000GT within 4 years.
Thank you very much, Sir!
Hello sir , my name is puneet kumar . I have 3 years experience in the merchant Navy as an ordinary seaman. Now I'm finding a job on a yacht and it's quite difficult, can you guide me on it .
This is very informative and useful! Great job, straight to the point! 👏🏽
Thx a lot!
Are all these required to sail a self owned small yacht like the Silent Yachts 55?
No, these qualifications are for service on board large superyachts that must adhere to stricter regulations. Different countries have different rules concerning the qualification requirements for small, private yachts, but none of them would ask for anything as comprehensive as those spoken about in this video.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Ok, thanks.
I am buying a super-yacht and I have question. Is it good to hire a crew that has a combination of “Man & Wife” teams working side by side, or should I stick with individuals without a personal attachments?
What type of leather are you using? Is this just regular vegetable tanned cowhide, or are you using a chrome tanned leather? Which is better for chafe protection?
hi! what is floor to floor height ?
Quick question i live in a country where yachting is not really a thing, so i am going to go international to dockwalk and day work, i assume i have to apply for a holiday visa right?
Hello, and thanks for commenting. It depends on what passport you hold. If you're planning to look for work in Europe then you may or may not need a Schengen visa.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht ok thank you very much just wanted to be sure
how can i work on a yatch? im a Chilean deckhand, and recently got my 4rd engineer seaman book. (1500Kv potency)
Matthew - you are an extremely well-spoken and articulate person. Spokesperson for a large company, corporation, government (federal, state/province, municipal level), etc. are possibilities. Instructor at a yacht/nautical training school? You are also obviously an intelligent and caring person. All of the aforementioned are excellent skills that, sadly, seem to be a rarity these days. I believe 'the world is your oyster', and you will excel at whatever you choose. Good luck and 'Godspeed' to you!
Hi Matthew..! Very helpful. PABLO @waterpauls
I'm super interested in getting into the industry I've been getting help finding information from my uncle. He showed me your channel yesterday ive been watching your videos since then I love this so much I'm going to check this out due to the fact I'm very serious about pursuing a career in the yachting industry!!!🎉🤜🏼🤛🏼
Hi matt just wanted to ask you, is it hard for a italian guy to start in the yachting world? Asking if there are any problems that could occur with any visas maybe? I dont know maybe caribbean? Thanks anyway for the videos, very insightful and very informative, hope you are good Take care
Hello, and please excuse the incredibly late reply! An Italian passport (or indeed any EU passport) makes you more eligible for a job in yachting than most nationalities. For the Caribbean and USA you'd require a B1/B2 visa, but this is no different to any other non-US national.
@@WorkonaSuperyachtthanks matt for taking your time to answer, i really appreciate it. Good luck for the future
I know bupkis about yachts I just had the odd urge to look this up, was informative nonetheless
good luck
How often are you cleaning with the 2 step process vs just washing down or rinsing down the teak decks? And do you use the same 2 step process on the teak tables?
These products are expensive, and also quite hard on the teak. We therefore try to keep it to a minimum: once at the start of each season, and maybe once again during the season on high-traffic areas. In between times we try to keep it as clean as possible, and will often do something like a Simple Green scrub with a softer Doodlebug pad. The same process can be used on untreated teak tables, but then you have to be even more careful not to let the Step 2 damage the fixtures and fittings of the table.
I'm 44 and just finishing a STCW course. I have 14 years experience as a masseuse and have also managed a couple of resturants in my time. I have travelled and lived in different countries since i was 18 and also speak Spanish as a second language. I have always kept myslef fit and healthy so really hoping to be able to find a job on yachts. Fingers crossed 🤞
Do u know anyone who is still in the industry and has a wife/family? In other words, does that romantic situation mix with the career and its demands?
Yes, I know plenty of crew members in this situation. I don't think it's easy, but they manage to make it work.
Fantastic
Great video, safety glasses always good to wear too ;)
you are amazing! your Channel is helping me a lot to earn knowledge and make me more confidence to travel and try this new career. thank u soo much!
Which certificates do I need to work on a yacht?
Interesting......will continue to follow your channel with interest Good luck 👍👍
This really was a great explanation. Unfortunately, I’m highly discouraged. However, it was great info. Thanks!
I've yet to graduate high school but it is my senior year, and I have taken multiple carpentry and collision repair classes. Do you think I should include these? also I have several certifications from Nccer and I-car which we use in these classes should I include those? Or should I mention that I've taken these classes and spin it off as having an understanding of power tools, sanding, filling holes, priming, and painting and not even bothering with the certifications?
Great Video
