Why Not Go

My love of 70's punk rock is a huge part of WhyNotGo and I try to tell stories that give you my perspective as a fan during that time, along with many insights and stories you may have never heard before.

    D A Pennebaker (of Don't Look Back fame) filmed the last night of the Ziggy tour for a documentary, the release of which was held up until the 1980s, I think - possibly due to legal wrangles with Tony DeFries. It was eventually released on video as a performance film with much of the documentary footage cut. I hope the footage still exists and someone restores it. Also, Bowie's dresser and make-up assistant from that tour, Suzi Ronson, has published a memoir, which I recommend.

    Between the ages of 17 and 20, The Velvet Underground and Warhol, that whole world, was all I needed. I loved those 4 albums - any books or documentaries on Warhol, Edie, the Velvets, and that scene, I devoured. I gather they were difficult folks and probably not easy people to know - particularly Lou Reed. But there was something fascinating about them. Around the time I got into the VU (the mid to late 80s) I thought much contemporary music here in the UK was utter rubbish. ('P**s poor' as we used to say.) To this day I remember when I first played that 3rd Velvets album: first line of the first song, 'Candy says, I've come to hate my body and all that it requires in this life...' That album was 20 years old at the time, and no contemporary band was making music like that. Go West. Spandau Ballet. Bros. T'Pau. Complete drivel by comparison. I'm glad I discovered the Velvets at a time when it still felt like you were a member of a fairly exclusive club. The arrogance of youth - I know! Years later, when I visited New York, I tried to find some VU/Warhol history. I wasn't too successful. But I fell in love with New York in the process and have returned several times since - in body and mind! Great post!

    I'm so glad you liked my video! Since you are a big VU fan, I really appreciate it. I got into them in the 70's only because Bowie kept mentioning them, and the fact he produced Lou Reed's Transformer, so I had to check them out. I love that line about Candy Darling too. I think I'll play that song today. They were so ahead of their time.

    Hi, the pub whose name I don't think you remembered was the Water Rat, over the road from Seditionaries in Milman's Street. It's no longer a pub, has had a couple of makeovers as restaurants. My missus worked in both the Roebuck and the Water Rat, but a few years after the Pistols hung around there. We live in Battersea, about a mile and a half from the KIng's Road, and despite the changes, it is still worth a stroll once in a while. You were right about the Pistols - they were a fantastic band. I've seen Lydon with PiL in the 80s but my only other brush with the band was drinking in the same bar (the Edgar Wallace) as Matlock a couple of years ago. All the best.

  • @WhyNotGoPlaces
    @WhyNotGoPlaces14 сағат бұрын

    Are you talking about the pub on the same side of the street as Seditionaries and very near Johnson's? I loved that pub. To be honest, I'm disappointed when a former pub becomes so upscale it doesn't feel like a pub anymore, but more of a high-end bistro. But it's still a great area for sure. If I lived in Battersea, I would visit Kings Road too. Thanks for watching!

  • @belmontbutty4143
    @belmontbutty414313 сағат бұрын

    @@WhyNotGoPlaces Hi, thank you for replying as I love watching your Chelsea related and Pistols videos. Regarding the pub, if you walked back from Seditionaries towards Johnson's. On the opposite side of the road where the King's Road turns into the New King's Road, there is a side road called Milman's Street. At the top of the street, where it meets the New King's Road, there used to be a pub called the Water Rat that Lydon drank in. It was a tall, white painted building. As I mentioned, it has had a succession of makeovers as an eaterie. I agree about pubs being 'gentrified' but I suppose younger people may socialise in a different way from the likes of you and I when we were young. Thanks again for rekindling old memories. Cheers.

    The phone box on the album cover with the equally sized panes is a model K2 and was introduced in the 1920s. The phone box now in place with the larger central panes is a model K6 dating from 1936, which is much smaller (and much plainer) than the K2

    Another great video Maggie! When I saw you were in London, I was thinking you should visit famous Bowie locations, Heddon st etc. . Great to see you did 👍👍. When I am next in London I want to get some pics around there. The Clash locations up at Campden are pretty cool too. A few years ago I was at an IT training course in Campden Stables Market, where the Clash were photo'd in the stairway for their first album, which used to be their rehearsal studio. I also used to work for an IT company based in the old EMI vinyl factory in Hayes, London. They had a museum in the building with famous emi artists, ie beatles, Queen, the sex pistols etc and lots of old vinyl on the walls on display. Was pretty cool. I live in Perth, Australia now. I love London for its music history, i miss being able to visit all those historic sites. Love your videos 👍 Ps - On the Ziggy Tour, he played Worthing Assembly Halls on 11 May 72, ticket prices 50p lol. I saw a bowie tribute band in same worthing venue about 15 years ago, and I could not believe Bowie had played such a small venue on that amazing 1972 tour!

    Maggie!!! I was on Heddon Street last April showing my family the same stuff you and Joe the Legend visited. I'd been there in the early 90s when the bricks were still painted like they were in the 70s and there were no restaurants and stuff. A "Key West" sign was still on the door but the one in the iconic album cover photo was gone. In April I noticed that there was an eatery or something right off Regent Street on Heddon and they had a "Key West" replica sign that was quite impressive. Did you see it? It was before the Starman pub on the right. 20:02 ! The man is a superstar! Thanks for this. I watched it on a Friday instead of saving it for Sunday, but that's fine. I will rewatch on Sunday. London is my 2nd home so I agree, just like NYC there’s so much music, literary, the arts in general to see just bumping into it by chance! The Sanctum is a boutique hotel, the best bar is their rooftop cigar bar w/ hot tub (for residents, members, no amount of chlorine is enough 😷… 😆watch, I’ll jump in next month🤣😆😂) especially when sunny, warm. On Kingly St. there’s the old “Bag O’ Nails” pub (empty😢) which was Hendrix’s 1st London gig ever. As soon as you walk into reception at the Sanctum there’s a lovely portrait behind reception & across to your left a beautiful stained glass portrait of him. If you have any pointers on how to contact him, I'd be extremely grateful. I was actually thinking just recently of trying to contact him through Facebook to do a Skype interview. I read his book Triggers recently (I have also read his first book) and yes I made a mistake on that video and a couple of people corrected me. He does mention in Triggers that he has 2 sons. I relied on Wikipedia and that was a mistake. Anyway, I'm so glad you like my videos. My next one will be on Bowie. Hope you like it. Thanks again! Maggie

    Wow, that's some list of legendary people! I went to a Mary Shelley site in Belgravia where there is a plaque in her honor. That was where she lived when she died, but I do remember reading that she lived earlier near Sloane Street in Chelsea. I should have gone there too. I love Mary Shelley. Thanks for this info. And thanks for watching!
