Great Rock&Roll Stories from 60's - 80's with Journalist Toby Goldstein.

Ойын-сауық

I had the pleasure of meeting Toby Goldstein recently and she came to my house for a rare interview. Toby wrote for Creem, Sounds, NME and more. She was also a press agent for Alice Cooper, KISS, TREX and The Cure's first tour of America. From the 60's to the 90's, Toby was a famed rocknroll journalist. She was in London in the summer of 1967 and she was in NYC to witness the birth of punk. She also saw the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club in 1976.
Hear her fun stories from a woman who made rocknroll her career!

Loved hearing about some of the old bands! Some great flashbacks and the inside stories were great. Im 62 and radio meant so much to those of us who enjoyed music in the 60s and 70s. Alice, T Rex, the Pistols, Arthur Brown, wow!! Thanks for the show, ladies! Btw, im going to see judas priest in columbus, ohio, at the sonic temple festival this coming May!

T Rex ! Awesome . Btw my Jimi Hendrix tribute from the 13 th of January this year up on my channel . I was trying to evoke vibrations of me and my Grandmother being at home in 1979 , mum too she was so good to me getting me records and Ernie Ball strings and my first guitar an acoustic identical to the one mick Ronson used at home with Bowie . Mum was too good to me .

Another wonderful installment! I have been going Marc Bolan/T. rex crazy lately. I was in London a couple of weeks ago and visited the street he lived on in Maida Vale as we were staying there. I can't tell you how much I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Your positive vibrations and similar musical interests make every Sunday even more special. Love love love.

How great you're staying in Maida Vale! I love that part of town. Sid used to live there too. When I lived in London in the 90's I lived in Kilburn and would often go to Maida Vale to eat at a Thai restaurant that had a pub on the ground floor. I saw Glen Matlock there a few times. He might still live in Sid's old flat in Maida Vale. I'm going to London in a month for a couple of weeks. I can't wait. I haven't been there since 2005, and that was only for a couple of days. I'm sure lots of things have changed. We're staying in Chelsea on Sloane Avenue. Thanks for liking this video! I really appreciate your enthusiasm. Toby is coming over on Tuesday for a visit. I hope she becomes a good friend of mine. She's a very special woman. Thanks again!

Big like! Thanks for the excellent interview! You two KNOW your stuff. Cool photos, memories, and insights abound in this session. The standout moment for me is when Goldstein said she was marginalized for voting for "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield in some Village Voice critics poll. This I love: Someone who thinks and writes from their heart and who is not afraid to go against what the thought police thinks is cool or worthy of praise. There was a lot of 'cooler than thou' attitude at all levels of the scene back then. I was sometimes guilty of branding things with labels like 'sellout' 'MOR' and 'pop drivel.' Now I know better.

Thanks for liking the video! Yes, that critic at The Village Voice, who was very famous and powerful, didn't want to hire her because even though she loved punk and was on the scene from Day One, she also liked pop as well, like Rick Springfield. I agree. It is the thought police! Back in the 80's I had some people make fun of me because even though I loved punk, goth etc, I also liked Billy Idol. I'm similar to Toby - if it's a great song, it's a great song. Thanks again for watching my videos and commenting!

@@WhyNotGoPlaces yes mate it’s a basement club but when you exit the back way you come out on the street behind which must be uphill slightly. Great place . The Stones and Eric Clapton played there ! There were pictures of them with Jeff Beck from 1986 I think on the walls . It was mostly a Jazz club in the old days and still is . Jazz is heavy shit

OK, this is some of your best content yet, great interview. I cannot believe you left out mention of "No Values" though. That show would be a dream lineup if this were the 1980's. We have got to get you and Toby to some shows for a review. Are you going to Brightside music fest? That's right in your own backyard, April 27th. WJRR Orlando Ampitheater. It would be great if Toby could get out to Pomona and write about the No Values...here's No Values lineup: Misfits(original lineup), Iggy Pop, Social Distortion, Turnstile, Bad Religion, Sublime-original with Bradley's son, Suicidal Tendencies, The Dickies, Dilliger Escape Plan, The Damned, The Vandals, Black Flag, Jello Biafra, TSOL, Joyce Manor, Powertrip, Fear, The Adicts, The Dead Milkmen, Agent Orange, Adolecents, The Bronx, The Selecter, The Untouchables, The Aqabats, Fishbone, Hepcat, and many more.

I would definitely be going to No Values if I still lived in the L.A. area. Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to mention it. I would love to see Iggy again, as well as Jello Biafra, The Dickies, The Damned, The Adicts, and more. What a line-up! Toby is coming over again next week. I will ask her if she knows about it. The Festival near me in Orlando is not really my taste. I guess I'm stuck in 1970's punk rock.:) Thanks for the compliment! And thanks as always for watching my videos. I really appreciate. it.

Wow, another cool transmission from Why Not Go. I remember watching your brief meeting with Toby at that Record Fair you broadcast. Remember thinking that an interview with Toby Goldstein would be very interesting because she had a story to tell and many encounters to reveal. This to me is like cultural gold dust. Many thanks for making this happen. Keep on keeping on ! All the best to you. Yrs Trev

Thank you Trev! I really appreciate you watching the videos. Yes, isn't Toby so interesting? I love her story about Bowie in the record shop watching people looking at his first record. And the fact he was standing in the same spot when she went back another day to buy it. That is cultural gold dust, as you put it. I bet he always remembered that time too. One thing I forgot to ask her about was working with the Cure. She was their press agent on their first American tour. Thanks again for watching!

Jimi Hendrix was released on Polydor post 1970 . War Heroes being a total classic release , HMV was near Hendrix flat and still is . I believe Hendrix knew Handle had lived next door to his flat on Brook Street and walked 100 yards to HMV Bond Street to get Water Music by Handle . The HMV is back in its rightful place and selling vinyl

Speaking of Mods did you ever see The Jam play live? Still jealous about you seeing Joy Division live too. Loved Circus, Hit Parader, Rock Scene and Creem. I’d buy them for the KISS pictures and articles but I’d always see the punk pictures and articles and they made me curious. So I got the Sex Pistols album and soon after punk and new wave became my life. I saw KISS at MSG in ‘79 then soon after I pretty much lost interest in them while I was discovering all of this new music. BTW,I love your videos

Thanks for watching this one! I did see The Jam when they first came to L.A. - I believe it was 1977 or early 1978. They played The Whisky on the Sunset Strip. Great live show. I always liked Paul Weller's voice. Thanks for mentioning Circus Magazine! I forgot to mention that one. I bought it all the time. I never saw KISS live. I remember they played The Forum around 1976. Now I wish I went. I think I was a bit too critical of them at the time. I was very into Bowie and I thought they were too commercial. I may do a Joy Division video. That will be an emotional one for me. I still love that band so much. Thanks again for watching!
