What's up guys! My name is Kenji and I am a doctor working in London after graduating from the University of Birmingham with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Science (BMedSci). Getting into medical school wasn't easy for me at all so I decided to make a channel where I can share my tips and experiences to you guys and hopefully help you in some way.
If you'd like to join me on my journey to becoming a doctor then please subscribe and hopefully we can help one another :)

Dude studied medicine and doesn't know what a biased opinion is. Using an anecdote is literally a fallacy that leads to bias... " I saw a PA give bad care." how about we look at the data if we are going to do a video about it. Also before you come at me. I was a PA student who is now in medical school so I think I have a balanced perspective on what each entails.
Thank you so much for sharing. I am starting in a few weeks and really nice to hear your experience and I will remind myself if I find it tough that this too shall pass.
If the intention was to make the service more efficient then I'm sure no one would argue with that. But if the intention is to cut funding then that's a different thing all together. 'Sacrifices' will always be made. In this case, it is your health. Efficiency is the government's euphemism for cutting funding.
The government wants to be able to control professions.
You said you work 60 to 70 hours a week? I have heard 48 h a week is standard for docs in uk? Or these hours are for FY docs only?
It is 48 hours a week averaged across a month. Sometime we work 7/8 days straight. Other days we only work 4 days. It varies.
I wonder if the situation is same in north.ireland, scotland and England?
Starters position in a supermarket in the Netherlands here earn an hourly rate of €18,- , roughly 15.5 pounds. I think 17 pounds is ridiculously low for a university lvl employee tbh PS, u earn double or 150% when working on Sundays and holidays or late hours(IN SUPEEMARKETS!!!)
The most ignored group in this muddle are pharmacists .I suggest strike and close down whole stores in the UK.Every week there are 10 chemists closed in the UK and wages are going down due to store closure, more stress and every pharmacy is becomming more busy .This is not true that doctors are more responsible. The prescription is a document but I had a doctor who wrote on piece of paper for the patient how to take medicine .The instrution was too compliateted so practisioner wrote as directed for the patient fit .This is an example how doctors are far from reality .He precribed for the patient medicine and every day was different .He should have prescribed than weekly prescription or slighly simplify .This is an example how doctors slipped away from responsibility .Prescription used to be important document .Pharmacists won't stand in the chemist anymore.
I'm glad i found this
With all respect but please look into the requirements for applying for physician associate studies, there is no medical school in the country which will accept a student with a history degree no way I challenge you on this in the nicest possible way
Shipman was a qualified Doctor
I agree with everything here. There could be use for the PAs such as taking measurements or readings but certainly not diagnosing. Also they should probably change the title to physician assistant.
Physicians advocating for a halt in Physician Associate recruitment, rather than advancing structured definitions and levels for PAs, seem to align with outdated, elitist Conservative values rather than prioritizing patient safety. It’s essential that we focus on progress and patient well-being rather than clinging to traditional hierarchies
Is Biomedical scince is exam based or assignment base exam in britsol university?
Are u in australia right now
Doctors hate them because PA are crap. I am talking as patient. No a person with a History degree cannot do a MA to become a PA. A person needs to so a science degree first etc. Medical centres do not tell patients they are seeing a PA and the latter does not either. In fact they pretend they are doctors and give that impression to the patient, this is illegal as impersonating a doctor is against the law. PAs are lacking and you can tell as you walk in. Doctors and Nurses have to know their stuff, so they spend a long training for it, this important as the public will pick up on lack of knowledge as it translates into lack of confidence. A PA with both is damn dangerous but a doctor and nurse usually are very confident as they are well trained for years and have status. PAs have no status other than a confusing moniker. PAs do not provide access to health care, as they act as a barrier, who do not take symptoms of a patients esp. when it comes to mental health seriously. When i asked for see a doctor, i was given a PA instead, i was not told the person was a doctor. When i went in the room I assumed they were a doctor, I picked up something was wrong with the PAs mannerisms, so i asked if they were a doctor and they said no. I was shocked. Now i lack confidence in the medical services provided, it was rock bottom already due to DWP medical assessments and the way doctors treated me over my Mother's death and the stitch up at the inquest. I never in my life thought the medical profession would pass an unqualified person as doctor. When i was seen by a PA there was no doctor in the room and the former had already made a diagnosis and just got the doctor to sign the prescription. No doctor saw me, that is wrong, imagine if i was given the wrong drug, or treatment, then i had a reaction to it and that cost me my life. It would not be the PA that is at fault but the Doctor who signed the prescription. My final thought PAs as assistants to doctors is a confusing status, nurses are there to be assistants to doctors and provide basic medical care. If you have PAs who are not nurses, who see themselves as more akin to doctors that is a problematic. As i have said nurses and doctors are for better trained but you if you have another role that is less trained but have a higher status than a nurse, the government is filling the NHs with pseudo medical staff.
Doctors need to learn to be better leaders, practice teamwork skills, and most importantly, agree to supervise PAs. Doctors that refuse to cooperate with PAs are the problem. It's not like PAs need any of this extra drama.
Nurses are important as well and not only the MDs are special in the medical field.
no hate here but it just sounds like the existence of the role of a PA is an excuse to avoid training more doctors 🤷♂
I’m a student and a vip bartender and I make more an hour 🥹
What's wrong with doctors? Even in USA doctors I hear they do not like the Doctorate Nursing Practice DNP. They forget that A mathematicians or psychologists they can be called doctors if the individual achieved a doctorate degree.
Those arent medical doctors and cannot use the title doctor in a medical setting.DNP isnt even a clinical qualifocation ,its often about education and used for lecturing or leadership roles.
i can't afford to do a masters, and i've been applying for medical lab assistant jobs with no luck, what other positions can i apply to as a biomed grad (non-accredited)?
for some reason i cant find ali abdaals course for anki on skill share
Can we study biomedical at any clg then can we eligible for medicne
Yes that’s usually the case
@@DoctorKenji as an international student also? Can international student afford medicine after graduating in biomed
Thanks for the information. I'm 24 and graduated from microbiology. Considering to enter medical school and this video is truly a light.
So glad!
Locum market is dying mate for shos, I've done sho locum years and reg locum years. I'd strongly suggest taking time out once you've completed core.
It is harder for you to get onto a training post because of the overseas trained doctors who are being brought to the UK
PAs have a science background not history or arts
Not all of them
They do not need a bio science bacground but should.
lol - you would hope so, but lots of PA courses accept anyone now
@@boratlovesrabbits I would put anatomy and physiology as minimum requirements in an umdergrad degree.
@@boratlovesrabbits how about you apply and try to get in then genius
An analogous resentment exists with BEng engineers 'hating' plumbers and installation/repair-technicians calling themselves 'engineers' and making a better, less stressful, living in some cases. So I find it ironic, and understandable, that some engineers becoming PAs creates an analogous resentment from doctors. But at least doctors maintain their professional title and status.
Safety is London is the only point I would disagree with. I’ve seen lots of crime in London. I would say 2.5 stars it’s quite dangerous.
But about taxes ..😢?
I think in the United States on a flight it is better not to accept any offers gifts upgrades because of possibility litigation legal issues
I think hate is a strong word ... more like envy ..
PA is a cheap and unsafe replacement for the Qualified Drs. They have No Governing Body, they have No Appraisals, if they make mistake - then Senior Dr on shift or in GP Practice is at fault and prosecuted by GMC. As they are Not under GMC- then technically and legally by default the PA cannot be prosecuted or suspended, and Practice or Hospital will struggle to get rid of PA as they will claim endlessly "unfair dismyssal" card. PA is the END of NHS. I would live to have Physician Assistant who would type my notes and referrals and would physically take bloods from patient and later will show results to me so I can check them before the end of the work day.. I need Physician Assistant and do Not need Physician Associate.
After completing biomedical degree if i want to entry into medicine than what will be the total cost for medicine degree? As i m a international student
14 POUNDS???????
Doctors have much better progression, PAs are permenantly capped at band 7
I work as a registered Biomedical Scientist in the NHS and I really enjoy my job. Very different process to medicine but we always have the patient in mind. My salary is ok, I’ve been qualified 2 years and last year with overtime and on-call payments I earned almost 40k. The money isn’t the be all and end all for me, I’m in it for the patients 😊
I need some information regarding my future career pathway on biomedical science. Currently, i am studying in bachelor of biomedical sciences from university of bedfordshire . After completing my graduation what will be best for me? My degree is ISBM accredited.
In undergrad, in the United States, you have to take science core classes for the PA program. Chemistry biology anatomy statistics and some higher science course's like biochemistry upper level
As a doctor maybe you can answer this question. A doctor and/ or nurse, etc job is to help people regardless of age, colour or gender, etc. Some of these people specialise in an area. Why do some doctors/ nurses choose to work with children only? When a their job is to help PEOPLE? I can understand not wanting to work in a different area, but why would they refuse to work with adults in their area. How is a child with let's say diabetes any different to an adult? The care might be different but the initial problem is the same for both.
If I’m the best in the world at tennis that doesn’t mean I should go play baseball, can I???….. yes but to make sure we win doesn’t it make sense to go get Jose altuve?

@@amvgiant9795 did you read my comment, from start to finish?
As a current student I can testify that NO, best quality isn't even remotely their priority. What you pay is worth half of the money you spend if not less. And those who aren't wealthy, are happily thrown to the curb. Moreover, bear in mind that whatever fee you see now will increase almost twice yearly. And the contents of lessons will not improve. Administrative staff will drive you nuts, and if they make any mistakes you'll be the one paying. I'm getting out of there ASAO. Not to mention that, unless THEY really like you or you are an expert brown nose, irrespective of how good you are, your grades will be affected and won't ever see a distinction. On the other hand, if you are white and/ or wealthy you'll see distinctions coming at you like tennis balls.
Doctors don't make mistakes?
Great point, get someone with significantly less training. That is the solution, right?
Physican Assistant...
I've just been rejected on a gap year after 4 interviews so I have to take another gap year lol
You got this!
Ex nurse and current patient who GP describes as a "complex case". I refuse to be seen by a PA instead of a GP. I have multiple conditions including a rare one, and there's no way a PA could safely diagnose me. I did once have an appointment with a PA who i thought was a doctor training to be a GP. Luckily for me she did ask the GP for advice, but her lack of quite basic knowledge was concerning.
I find your lack of ambition concerning. As a former nurse and now PA you should be able to use use more than half your brain cells please
If a doctor hates a PA… there is something wrong with the doctor. The person doing the hate is always in the wrong. Its a healthcare team now not a dr only team. Doctors that have this thinking are horrible to work with or upset they did a bunch of schooling and people are not kissing their feet like the old days. There is a reason a Pa education is popular and why the 2024 match had a bunch of open spots left lol.
Was thinking the same. The doctor mentioned in the video supposedly worked unsupervised, so why this named doctor did not supervise him as required? He was clearly biased, bitter and did not foster the right environment to properly integrate PA into the team.
Please have a look at the job market right now for FY3s, it is not the same as it was when I was an FY3 (good 5 years ago). Have a look at JCF roles being taken up left right and centre, I would hedge your bets to either save a tonne now as an FY2 if you want to chance it with locumming or start applying for jobs now. I would have a look at Australia as well in all honesty (not as much admin burden costs as a fresh PGY unlike me as a GP who would be looking at around minimum 10k in costs to transfer my qualifications). I am so sorry that the job market is so shit for you right now, FY3 (and 4) were some of my best years and allowed me time to be me. I am just looking out for you, and the realities of the job market right now. All the best xxx
Thank you so much for your advice!!
We have PAs and NPs here and now nurses can get a DNP, doctor of nursing practice. What bothers me are chiropractors calling themselves chiropractic physicians
Is it a hard degree ?
In many ways! But very worth it
Going to be 24 🙂i already feel its too late to start medicine
