Growing mushrooms, foraging for wild foods, and everything else related to fungi!
We'll teach you how to cultivate mushrooms from the micro home setup to the small to medium sized mushroom farm, show you how to maintain fungi cultures in a home laboratory, scale up your farming operation, and maybe learn something new about fungi loving cultures and foraging. North Spore is your access to the world of fungi. Grow mushrooms and Spread the Spore!

Very informative.Thank you
That syringe was sterile and you contaminated it by doing anything but just use it.
Amazing
should the fan intake be covered? probably shouldnt be a probelem once is colonized, but before the onside would be susceptible to get contamination... any advice?
So after you harvest that, is that it? Throw the dirt it grew on away?
is that shitake
What can you yield put of something this size?
Imagine if one day cordyceps could be genetically modified to inoculate other insects. Mushroom genetics show incredible potential for us to benefit.
Beautiful specimens! Kinda looks like the growth habit of C. militaris!
WOW
where to buy such a substrate? or what to make of?
You can find our manure-based substrate and info on how to make your own on our website 🙂
Preordered one for July! CAN'T WAIT!
🙌
Awesome video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
thank you
Any time!
If it's kept in a sealed bag will there be problems with air exchange? I thought they need fresh oxygen to grow.
Good question! The bag should be closed, but not 100% airtight - tying a knot at the top does it. This will allow enough air for colonization since not much fresh air is needed during that stage. Additionally, a ton of moisture and CO2 is retained, which facilitates this vegetative growth. After a few months, once the pillar is enveloped in white (or mostly), you’ll be taking the bag off and introducing fresh air that will induce fruiting 🙂
Do you mix the coir with other substrates and what mushrooms prefer coir?
Coir can be thought of as a pretty neutral ingredient that contributes carbon and not much else to a grow from a nutritional perspective. That said, it adds a ton of structure and moisture retention. Some folks do grow with nothing more than grain spawn and coir. Some will add vermiculite and gypsum for moisture retention and pH balance. Nutrition-rich components like manure, soyhulls, wheat mids or alfalfa can be yet another addition. So, while you can use coir as an ingredient to grow pretty much anything, it is most often used to grow certain popular dung-loving medicinal mushrooms. Even though they grow in the wild on manure, these mushrooms do incredibly well on coir mixtures with a high grain spawn rate!
Does anyone have experience putting holes on only one side of the buckets. I am wanting to place them next to the walls and in double rows. Holes onl only one side would allow this easily.
This was very helpful ❤
Happy to help 🙂
Hey yall. I just got a fruiting block and im following the instructions in the booklet. Id definitely appreciate more videos on each type of fruiting block and how to use them.
Hello! We're working on a video for that right now, so stay tuned!
Once the tub is fully colonized, do you immediately on that same day turn on the fan and humidifier or do you give it a few extra days to consolidate as you would with other methods?
As soon as it's fully colonized, you can set up your automated systems 👍
@@NorthSporethank you and also thank you for taking the time to answer questions.
I would use a flame to sterilize the syringe. If you use alcohol, don't whipe it of with your gloves...
Hello, i have a question about putting your mushrooms in direct sunlight. Do you put them by the window after you transfer the mycelium to the monotub? I always thought that direct sunlight would kill the mycelium. Im a first time grower i just started the process with my spawn bag and put in in a dark place to wait for colonization.
We wouldn't recommend putting them in direct sunlight - ambient light is best and you can always use LED lights 👍
Wow that’s so cool
Does the Monotub approach also work with Parasol? I wasn‘t able to find anything about growing this mushrooms indoors.
We don't have any experience growing parasol mushrooms, and it looks like they're a bit easier - though still difficult - to grow outdoors. You could always do an experiment!
Your videos are really super! Keep up the great job, love seeing the content your putting out.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video. Thank you so much!
We appreciate the support 🙂
I like growing button mushrooms
What's your technique?
thanks boss
Can I freeze the Coco coir that was rehydrated too? Or is it more for the stuff that went through pasteurization?
Yes, you can freeze rehydrated coco coir!
I prefer using a big disposable aluminum BBQ tray with a smart thermometer in the oven. Or just buckettek it because it works fine.
Thanks for the helpful info. North Spore is the best.
I' m from sri lanka.our cuntry doesn' t have this lind of green houses in market..so I made by using wood..then I buy polythene to cover it..also I doesnt have enough money to get humidifier Can I use alternatives for it to control humidity..also can I use fan on my cpu..please give instructions
As with plants, the amazing thing about growing mushrooms is that it can be done 10,000 ways. Making your own fruiting room is awesome and not difficult if you have the principles down. Humidity is critical, but many folks out there don’t have humidifiers and high tech systems either, instead relying on the ambient humidity along with manual misting. Just fill up something like this and spray your blocks a few times a day: www.amazon.com/Harris-Pump-Sprayer-Home-Garden/dp/B07TDS7GLX/ref=asc_df_B07TDS7GLX/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693713553112&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3548208550452047569&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9189695&hvtargid=pla-1588195238307&psc=1&mcid=35dc448fce3f367a8c522c9c1be81a19&gad_source=1
Is light is needed at night time?
No, just some ambient light from time to time will help 🙂
what about rice patties instead of the substrate?
Rice can be used for spawn or as a substrate component, yes 🙂
ive had strains fruiting in as little as 10-11 days
Probably one of my favorites here in Washington state. They taste like shiitakes to me :P
That's really really underrated and not well known advice.
Nato is delicious though
I've read you can sometimes get multiple flushes from one bag, sometimes up to a year (and depending on the items at hand). Is that from just letting them flush over and over? Do you gently break up the substrate after each flush to mix it up? Or do you put the colonized substrate into a tub on more substrate lol
Is there a minimum size for cutting? Is it necessary to stretch the bag to increase the opening of the hole or is cutting it enough? Is it necessary to spray water inside as the bag's apparent humidity decreases? Is some type of extra ventilation necessary, or does cutting only guarantee the necessary gas exchange?
So well presented and produced. Both the video and the audio were exceptional. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
The Rookie Mycologist send me
💪
This is the video i didnt know i needed.
Throw some biochar in the mix
Put a couple cases of water in your refrigerator so the compressor doesn't work so hard maintaining temperature
Between the humidifier and the air exchange, how noisy is this setup?
Noisiness is very subjective, but we would say it not very noisy 👍
I had a friend who grew mushrooms. And he was absolutely OCD about sterilization. Is all this necessary? What happens if you just keep it very clean and don't worry about being sterile? Has anybody actually tried it? Does it mess up the yield? I'm just thinking diminishing returns here, is it really worth it?
It's really about increasing chances of success and decreasing chances of contamination. If you want to increase your chances of a successful yield, you should put the effort in to being very clean - if you don't and somehow avoid contamination, that's some pretty good luck.
What kind of hay
We recommend untreated straw 🙂
Ehy grow them if you can't eat them ??
For fun!
That kind is beautiful ❤️
