    Thanks John! The box itself is perforated. Most people will be able to use their fingers to open it. Alas, we used the box cutter... and certainly there is a chance you'll cut through the bag if you use one. The good news is that it won't really affect anything. Your mushrooms will still grow. We recommend keeping your kit someplace with some ambient humidity, near a sink usually works well. We haven't found the humidity tents to be necessary, but if you live in a particularly dry climate it might help!

    It contains a set amount of mushroom 'food' (amended sawdust). Over time, and hopefully multiple flushes, it will deplete its food source and be finished. At that point you can compost the substrate within or add it to a garden outdoors. Sometimes the mushrooms will establish themselves on other 'food' sources. We've had lots of success getting them to start growing in woodchips and straw beds after being used and exhausted indoors.

    You don't need to empty the bottle but you do want to ensure the X gets damp! This does require some trial and error. For example, if you go to spray the surface and it seems dry, you want to be spritzing it more frequently, with more volume, or adding a humidity tent.

    Hello! The kits are a fully colonized sawdust block, but it is best to keep only one side exposed as you risk drying out the block by opening more than the front portion. Lion's Mane is best to harvest when the "teeth" or "hair" looking characteristics form. Please consider the full cycle of the product in your video. How do we best dispose of the box and substrate bag after use? How long /many times can we expect to harvest mushrooms from that kit? Do we always use the same side or do we need to rotate a quarter turn to use each side once?

  • @NorthSpore

    @NorthSpore

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Sebastien, you can compost the substrate within the box and recycle the box and bag. We guarantee the first harvest, but most people get at least two or three. Usually it will take increasing time for the mushroom mycelium to gather the 'strength' to produce subsequent flushes. In other words, your first flush usually starts within two weeks. The second flush may come another 2-3 weeks after that, a third flush may take a month or more. You don't need to slice any side but the one with the perforated line. Adding additional slices to the bag doesn't increase your yield, but will make the kit more prone to drying out. Hope this helps!

    Hey guys, I had a lion's mane kit that I had fruit three separate flushes, but each flush never developed teeth, and quickly turned yellow after attaining any reasonable size. After the first flush I did some research and thought maybe I needed some more air exchange, so I tried using a small fan to get some air movement, but the same problem persisted with the second flush. So, after the second harvest I tried again without the fan and still had the same result. Any thoughts on why I never got any teeth development, and why they were turning yellow?

  • @NorthSpore

    @NorthSpore

    3 жыл бұрын

    Lion's Mane needs pretty frequent air exchange which the fan would've helped with, but you also want to maintain high relative humidity for the mushrooms to grow properly. Usually, yellowing indicates the mushrooms are drying out before their prime.

  • @F0shiz

    @F0shiz

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@NorthSpore Thanks for the reply! I was spraying fairly frequently with the third flush as I thought maybe that was the issues as well, but still had yellowing. When I went to dispose of the block the back side of the block was fairly wet, and there was a blue mold on the side of the block, so I was probably over doing it at that point. Guess it just takes practice to get a well balanced harvest. I'll have to try again some time.

    The yield depends greatly on how much care you put into maintaining your kit! It also varies significantly based on species to species and the growing environment. The species we carry are all vigorous growers and typically produce a first flush of 1/2 lb-2lbs. Most kits will produce between 2-3 flushes of mushrooms. Once your kit is spent (if the weather is warm) you can put your block outside in your yard or garden and potentially get more mushrooms as well! [Here](northspore.com/blogs/the-black-trumpet/what-to-do-with-your-mushroom-grow-kit-when-its-done) is a post we recently made on ways in which you can do this!

    You don't need to empty the bottle but you do want to ensure the X gets damp! This does require some trial and error. For example, if you go to spray the surface and it seems dry, you want to be spritzing it more frequently, with more volume, or adding a humidity tent. If your home is dry or you live in a dry climate, I always recommend a humidity tent to be sure your kit gets the humidity it needs while growing! Humidity Tent Instructions: Simply take a trash bag or other loosely fitting plastic bag and put PLENTY of 1/2 inch holes in it (THIS IS IMPORTANT: Mushrooms exhale CO2 and inhale oxygen. They will suffocate themselves if there isn’t adequate airflow! Mushrooms that look stringy or strange are usually growing that way because they need more air!). Spray the slice at least once per day with the included spray bottle. If you choose to use a humidity tent make sure to spray the inside of the tent once per day to maintain humidity.
