Alice Springs is more of a small city from an Australian perspective.

Always thought Alice was of a decent size (currently 33,000 approx) but it’s not that much bigger than my suburb. Like twice as many people go to a Taylor swift concert.

This is like in movies and such when you see the world map on a screen in the main war room and it has the location of the virus outbreaks of where the bombs are or the alien landing sites. You always get dots on Australia that in no way relate to population centres.

The Alice is not a small town by Australian standards, we have many tows where if you turned up in a car with a mate you'd double the number of people in the town, after filling your car's fuel tank you rock up to the bar and notice the guy serving you at the bar looks awfully familiar 🤣

For context, in Australia, 25k is a decent sized city if you aren’t in one of the capital cities; and in the Northern Territory where Alice Springs is, most of the towns are 1-2 thousand people at most so Alice really is the largest major city after Darwin. It seems to be an area thing, hence why Alice is on the map with places like Hong Kong or Beijing.

Alice Springs isn’t a tiny town. It has a decent population and is a major regional centre.

I went to Australia a few years ago for work. I tried it and loved it. I starred experimenting and putting on everything. Its actually really good on apple slices. I told the locals and they thought I was just another crazy American, sacrilegiously doing things with the holy Vegemite that should never be done. Now I can never go back to Australia.

I love how 25,000 ppl is a "Tiny Town" to you. In country Australia that's basically a city 😄. I grew up in the biggest town of 10,000 ppl, which was so big it was the regional hub 🤭

I could be wrong, but I'd say the main reason that Alice Springs is labelled on maps is because of how close it is to Uluru.

alice springs is a crime haven that is also a tourist trap. It should be left off maps for the aboriginals to bask in their aboriginality.

It might also be because of the CIA base 20 odd minutes away... So when US government personnel get told about Pine Gap and ask "where tf is Pine Gap?", they are told 20-30 minutes from Alice Springs, and they ask "where tf is Alice Springs?" they can be told, "it's on most maps, it's in the middle of Australia"

Baltimore effect or not, Alice Springs is the second largest city in the Northern Territory and so it's on every Australian road map because it's the only town for hours around you with any real civilization so if you're traveling the Australian outback you'll need to stop there or you may run out of fuel in the outback, hence it's very important to have it on our maps

I have never seen ur channel before butttttt it doesn't seem like you know much about Australia. There isn't anything except for desert all through the Stuart highway (the only road between Darwin and Adelaide). Alice Springs is labelled because it is an insanely important part of Australia and it's defence force (pine gap anyone???) as well as it's historical and cultural significance. The most common way to get to Uluru, a World Heritage Site, is through Alice Springs, not many people live there but hundreds of thousands of people travel there every year. Alsooooooooo did you ever think that it would look seriously weird if the majority of the Australian landscape wasn't labelled, like of course there has to be a label where Alice Springs is because the only other thing inland is desert, maps aren't just all based on population.

Alice is a very significant town despite it's size. Just outside of Alice is the CIA/NSA Joint US/Australian installation Pine Gap that controls US ballistic missile telemetry and satellite/space tracking, and it's where the NSA transmits Australian web traffic to their installations on US soil. It's in the middle of the country partly to reduce the impact of spy ships snooping it. It's the most significant joint US/Aus military installation and has been running since the 60s. Alice is also close to Uluru which is one of Australia's most famous natural landmarks. It was the war time capital of the NT during WW2. It's a significant crossing point historically and also connected early telecommunications from south australia to britain. It's always punched above it's weight in significance relative to population and was justified being the on the map for these reasons and many more so this seems like kind of a poor example to use

To be fair, Alice Springs is the gateway to the famous Uluru, so knowing where it is for that purpose is probably why it's usually included on maps.
