No somalia's claim is not according to the border. Somalias border isn't diagonal, zoom in and around a few kilometres from the sea it turns straight down poiting towards Comoros. So if Somalia did use this as a claim Kenya would be almost and not just exaggeratingly landlocked. But we claim as you said the most used and fair principle, the equidistant line.

Hamidi Maqtal this is absolutely right! The Somalia-Kenya border indeed points quite south right near the land terminus. I saw this on maps while researching (links in description) - but since the direction of the border is not the basis of the claim anyway, I didn’t mention it. From a zoomed-out map it still looks like a similar direction though, and I even found (incorrect) news reports that this was the basis of the claim (looking at you, Deutsche Welle!). You have a keen eye 🔍.

İ didn't expect you to comment on my comment. 😅. One tip as a Somali (in Australia nonetheless) we are too too proud a d will scour KZread for videos on Somalia or Somalis. Therefore whenever you make a Video touching on Somalia be prepared for a lot of Somalis to view it and give you their own choice of words. 😅 They can come across as being rude but often it's their lack of English skills or utter stubbornness. Oh and also they always bring up the old saying "in the 60, 70, 80's we were the power house of Africa, where Kenya and Ethiopia feared Somali retaliation" which was true but due to our own doing. Rather the cold war gave us hot weapons and money to concentrate on the military. Otherwise we had too much other problems droughts, famines, floods, and the other post independence Nation building hurdles. After the weapons and cash stopped coming in From Russia snd then America and due to the displacement by war, drought, famine, weak institutions, disillusionment with military rule Siad Barre's military regime collapsed.

It's a simple straight line into the sea using one international datum or a point of reference, the latitude or longitude. The latitudes or longitudes are not in contention. Anything else is ambiguous. Without latitude a Tanzania island would be Kenyan or simply Kenya would be sealocked by the somali thinking.

If Somalia wins this case, the court should extend the same judgement to Kenya/TZ border. That however will raise even more complications as it might require division of Pemba Island.

Everyone is saying it’s clearly Somali water, but every other county in the region is using latitudinal lines. Making the Somali claim a little strange for the region, and since the convention is deliberately vague it may be better for the region to have one convention.
