I really don't like saeed book bank, they just feel so capitalising off of books with zero appreciation for the books. I hate how most of them are all wrapped and you cant even go through them. readings in lahore is such a different (much better experience, you can just tell they have so much appreciation for the books

Jane Austen's zombie secret. As we all know from the famous literary influencer Sir Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton, Jane Austen novel begins with the sentence:"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains is in want of more brains." 🧐. As to wether I may, or may not intended such elucidation to entice a comparison between Jane Austen's original "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" and Zeth-Grahame-Smith's copy "Pride And Prejudice", I shall leave to the better judgment of the best classics booktuber.

I've read passages from several English translations, and they just didn't come together. English doesn't handle hexameter too well, it's a wayward language when it comes to poetry. My all-time favorite is the translation into Russian by Gnedich. It's another level: it pumps electricity through your blood from beginning to end

Thank you. I am fascinated by this. I know some of the Russian translators were really first rate. One of my primary regrets was leaving on the shelf a Russian translation of "Leaves of Grass," by Walt Whitman when I saw it in a used book store. I have some ability to read Russian, and am fussy about English translations of Russian Literature.

Good summary and very good advice. I too had trouble finding a translation that suited my style of reading and also found Pope’s translation the best for what I wanted. Partly because as I am older (and graduated before American school systems decided that students didn’t need to know English, Maths or the History of the country they live in). And, you are also right, Pope's verse flows better and that also enhances the readability of the story. Thank you for you time and insight.

German classics (authors are German unless otherwise specified): It sure feels like every student has to read either Goethe or Schiller in school, in particular: - Intrigue and Love by Schiller (burgoise tragedy) - The robbers by Schiller (tragedy) - The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe (epistolary novel) - Faust I & II by Goethe (tragic play) Both were active in the late 1700s/early 1800s and generally represent the german cultural and literary movements Strum und Drang, as well as Weimar Classicism. If you're interested in WW2 literature, you might want to look into exile literature, post-war literature, Trümmerliteratur ("rubble literature") and Vergangenheitsbewältigung ("overcoming the past"). Some examples off the top of my head: - Chess by Stefan Zweig (Austrian writer, exile lit.) - The Visit, The Physicists by Friedrich Dürrenmatt (Swiss writer, post war) - Berthold Brecht, father of epic theatre; notable works include The Threepenny Opera (pre WW2), Mother Courage and Her Children (exile lit.), and The Good Person of Szechwan (exile lit.) - The Tin Drum by Günter Grass (Vergangenheitsbewältigung) - The Man Outside by Heinrich Böll (Trümmerliteratur)

Great haul Reesha! I love that you picked up the short story collection by an author you weren't allowed to read when you were younger, now you can see what all the fuss was about! The feminist books you got sound really interesting. I'm wanting to read more nonfiction so I got some good ideas from you! I feel you on wanting to connect with and learn more about your home country and read in your first language. For me it's Mexico and Spanish 💜

The first time I read Minor Detail (3 years ago, maybe) I was unimpressed, and I think the reason behind that feeling was that I was not ready for a story like that one. I re-read it about 2 months ago (it was an audiobook, actually) and I could feel everything I didn't before... It's definitely a tough read, you feel its cruelness, dryness and crudeness, but it's also worth the time since it depicts a tougher reality.

I just watched your Saeed Book Bank vlog, and immediately searched for Feminisms of Our Mothers because it looks so intriguing! The publisher, Zubaan, has soooo many interesting books on their site, even one by Sara Ahmed who grew up in my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia. I'm not sure if they ship internationally but I might try buying their ebooks and seeing if that works!
