I have only played gta 5 but that game and the franchise as a whole is full of talented and dangerous individuals in it which was why in 5 I spared Trevor and Michael’s life knowing that their deaths would have made no difference what so ever. Even if they died there would be other psychopaths to take their place with some being more dangerous even after one of them dies or both.

Don't forget assassination missions that are canon in GTA IV as they have some story in them. And the people he has to kill in random encounters. Niko also has 30 most wanted criminals to kill in LC, and usually you have to take out quite a few guys before you get the the one you're after, but yes, not much story in it.

Gta4 mid story is really lacking cuz Niko turns from pretty interesting and complex character to a simple gun for hire who’s entire motivation is to “make money”

Actually, technically, Michael and Trevor have way more kills than Franklin does and Michael would probably have more than Trevor being that. He’s the oldest out of the three.

I went for the money in that game over going with John cause I like money and I even got it once I completed the epilogue missions and John got to keep it and I also did that cause I prefer a warriors death over letting tuberculosis take Arther’s life so in a way I took one thing down with me the disease. I wish I could take out Micah too but he had plot armor which was the only reason the gang didn’t kill him.

GTA 4 was incredibly combat heavy. The gameplay didn’t help nikos case tho. Loud, recoil heavy weapons, really detailed death animations. Dying enemies attempting to flea. Game was fucking awesome.

Niko is a far better written character who only takes hit jobs because he has to and he gets hit hard by the loss of innocent life. Trevor on the other hand is a psycho who will just kill anyone on the street because they breathed if he's in the mood to.

Niko was a soldier, sent to war, and was betrayed. You’d have to piss him off really bad to get him to kill someone (which is part of the reason Niko is in Liberty City to begin with, he’s hunting down the man who betrayed him and his friends during the war).

Niko is a protagonist that, although has committed countless crimes and murders, we can still empathise with. It seems that all he truly wants is to make the best out of a shitty situation so that him and his cousin can live happily. His actions, although criminal, serve a purpose for him and his loved ones, and throughout the story he seems to consider his decisions in line with some semblance of a code of ethics/moral compass. In addition to this, while he is ruthless (as someone in his position/lifestyle should be), he seems to have a sense of humanity about himself in the way that he processes past trauma and how he makes sense of the chaos LC presents him with. He has also demonstrated his willingness to fight through hell in order to protect and save those he loves. In my opinion, he is a good person at heart, who unfortunately got too deeply involved in a dark lifestyle that doesn't have a happy ending for most people. The sad truth is that there are many people like this out there!
