Really interesting video :) thanks for the history lesson. I didn’t know about this voyage. I live near the folly you spoke of (shared by northern mudlarks channel) It is on the Fife coastal path here in Scotland. This structure was built in 1770ish and it is called “Lady’s Tower” built for Lady Anstruther. She used it as a viewing point and to rest after her regular bathing in the river :) Lots of folly’s in UK especially on wealthy estates, where they would build an ancient looking ruin in their gardens/on their land to mimic the real ancient towers/ruins.

Experts always miss the important part of this narrative. The natives of Greenland etc would visit Northern Britain. It worked both ways. Also Bristol merchants were most likey visiting the North East coast of America in the 1450s. Remember The last European colony survived in Greenland till the early 1400s.

In Alaska flat bottom deep well skiffs are used for catching salmon with 40 ft nets. They have to lay the nets out on the mudflats to catch fish with the tide. They sit out there for a few hours. But man when that tide rolls in they start really pulling in fish.

I agree with a lot of this video. There are tribes in Fiji that have libyan language roots. This all makes sense, but I believe Maui and Rata, the birth of polynesia melanesians, were definitely in the pacific long before polynesians and Micronesians.

Well done. Love to see other people who have built Jeff’s boats. You just have to love Jeff’s Dories. I have built the Nova Scotian 17’ and the Key Largo Carolina Dory. Love these boats. In all I have the plans for eight of his boats. Thanks for posting. Guess I will have to make a video too.

Stitch and glue is probably a consequence of 3D software becoming more accessible at a lower cost like Fusion360. This technique reguires a precision shape of the plywood and today with CNC mills it is an easy path from the design to building. But I understand your affinity for frame boats, even in 3D you use frames to create the shape so why not build the boat that way also?

I'm an amateur builder, so I'm interested in why diffrent boats have diffrent shapes (not interested in power boats however) The point of a dory shape is that it is sliperry (narrow bottom, but also very seaworthy.) The narrow ends means they pierce the waves, and the flared sides mean they knock down the waves. And the most important thing about them, they are meant for carrying a lot of weight, e.g. dead fish. The more loaded down they get, the more stable they become.

I agree, but someone who is going to cruise thousands of miles on inland waterways can benefit from the fuel economy of a lighter boat. They can do it with less motor. This is really important if you are trying to come up with a useful, practical, electric power option. The boat will need a ridiculous amount of battery storage which will provide plenty of ballast. Foam core isnt a panacea for all that ails but it does solve a few problems, and is common for superstructures and interior paneling. Im not too sure about its suitability for a hull. I guess it depends but Id probably steer away from that.
