    @@jeffvoganphotography I did the whole player keyword thing in Photo Mechanic, then created a Smart Collection for each player in Lightroom before importing just the tagged images. Now I can see how many shots I got of each player (it's Australian Rules Football) so that I can even them out. Question. For MaxPreps they want The crop to be exactly 3000x2216 pixels . Can you crop inside PM to those specific recommendations ?

  • @jeffvoganphotography
    @jeffvoganphotography2 ай бұрын

    I would set a constrained crop in PM to 100 x 73.8667 to get the correct perspective. Then when I export from Lightroom, I'd set the correct crop size. But you may have cropped too small, so I have smart galleries in LR that will show me the images that are too small. I record them larger and they should disappear from that smart gallery.

    Hello @jeffvoganphotography, I'm having difficulties trying to open CR3 files imported into Photo Mechanic 6 to Camera RAW in Photoshop 2024 using the shortcut 'E', just like I do with CR2 files. When I press the 'E' shortcut, it now opens in the MacBook's image viewer. Could you assist me with this?

  • @jeffvoganphotography

    For technical support I recommend you contact Camera Bits. One possible reason for your issue is PM does not understand what type of file the CR3 is. It is possible that you need to update your PM to the latest version. If that doesn't help, then you could tell PM what application to use for CR3 files. I explain how to do that in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2yeyayxaLDLl6w.html

    Huge help mate really appreciate it! Something to note for new versions of photo mechanic is the default delimiter character is = NOT \ so when adding the new text file be sure to check what character is selected in the bottom left before hitting ok.

  • @jeffvoganphotography
    @jeffvoganphotography2 ай бұрын

    Yes, the default delimiting character used to be / on a Mac. Camera Bits changed it to = a few years ago when they saw my workflow and how I used variables to create subfolders. The / caused issues so I changed the delimiting character to = and it worked fine. When I showed that to Camera Bits, they changed it going forward.

    My first big event after going full-time was the national figure skating championships. I had 85,000 images, taken over four 16-hour days. I was under contract to rename every image after the skater, placing them in folders named after each skater. It took me 3 weeks to do that in Lightroom. I was determined to find a better workflow. I saw the videographer changing tapes for each skater. I knew that I could do the same thing, but virtually, by changing storage folders in camera. I started using PM and subsequently shot a figure skating competition where I had over 100K images. The foldering and renaming took zero time in post thanks to my use of Photo Mechanic.

    I don't understand exactly what you are trying to do. I think that my video on ingesting may be of help to you. I do not recommend culling on the memory card. I recommend that you ingest all of the images onto your computer. Then you cull by assigning a rating or tag to the images you wish to keep. Move just the keepers to Lightroom for editing. You can then go back to PM and delete the unrated images. If you used Move or Copy to import into LR, you could delete all of the images from the ingest destination since the keepers are now stored in the location LR saves the files.

    Hello Jeff. Great video, impressive work, and the {foldernum} workflow is very sophisticated, congratulations! It seems to work with a card reader at first glance, doesn't it? However, at certain events like triathlons, I transmit directly from cameras on helicopters, motorcycles, the finish area, etc., to an FTP server (Live Ingest). It appears that the quick folder switch in the camera doesn't have an impact because {foldernum} is not part of the EXIF information...

  • @jeffvoganphotography
    @jeffvoganphotography6 ай бұрын

    The workflow that I demonstrated is not appropriate for situations where you are photographing multiple subjects at once, like triathlon, football, hockey, etc. you lose the folder information when you FTP or live ingest. Such events would utilize a different workflow than I demonstrated.

  • @jeffvogan2181
    @jeffvogan21816 ай бұрын

    I gave some thought to your requirement but haven't tested it. You could write the folder number to an unused ITPC field, then when you transmit the images to an FTP server, you could set PM to live ingest from that FTP folder and apply the Hot Codes against the foldernum variable in that otherwise unused ITPC field. That would be worth testing out.

    Hi ans thanks for your video. It seems that foe the crop to take place in actuallity, we need to let PM regenerate a new JPG export, right? Also, for some reason the quality of that export seems to me to be of a lesser quality than other JPG generators (I use DXO). Am I missing something?

  • @jeffvoganphotography
    @jeffvoganphotography7 ай бұрын

    I am not sure what you are trying to do regarding exports. PM is a file browser, not an editor. If you crop a raw file, for example, PM creates an XML file that describes the crop. It is non-destructive so no pixels are lost. When you import the image into an external editor such as Lightroom or Photoshop, the editor reads the raw file and XML file. I have never compared the quality of jpgs generated by PM against those created by external editors. I have never noticed any reduction in quality when PM generates the jpg files.

  • @jeffvoganphotography
    @jeffvoganphotography7 ай бұрын

    I agree with you on the shortcut. I think that the auto align feature is unlikely because that would require some significant understanding of what's in the image. What I recently found with my Sony A7R3, whenever I use folders with the prospect of applying code replacements to them, Sony doest this weird thing.. It creates a new folder once image counter gets to 9999, which is normal. However when I switch back to a folder I used before the one that got to 9999 file numbering continues where it ended there. Say folder 101 had last photo numbered 9956, then I switch to folder 102 where it continues from 9956 and gets to 9999 creating 103 folder and starts naming files from 0001. However when I switch back to folder 101 my Sony decides to continue numbering files from 9956, gets to 9999 and then creates a new folder 104, which complicates everything if you are not aware of it.

    I really like your video's. My question is how do you save the crop using PM? Thanks

    When you take the image into LR/PS, the crop info (maintained in the XMP file) is retained. When you “save as” make sure the Apply Crop box is checked.

    PM has got too many things on it now. The typeface is so small it is becoming difficult to work with at speed. It's original purpose is getting lost.. a fast application to select and caption photos for press work at speed. The older versions like 4.5 are faster and less cluttered. Camera Bitz take notice. You are trying to do too much.

    Brand new to PM. My folder structure on my storage disk is exactly like yours. I hace Pm set up like you have suggested. My question is how exactly are you getting the photos into the folder structure on the storage disk so that light room will always know where they are?

    When you import into LR, LR will store the images in the destination you specify. If I want to maintain the folder/subfolder structure, I specify “into original folders” in the LR import dialog.

    I cannot get this blummin software to import correctly, all it does is Copy the files from A to B, where I want it to just import them from A leaving them in the file structure that is there, I was hoping your videos would help but it must be something that Photo Mechanic can not do as I cannot find anyone that has done a video on this task, also, do you know of a way to just read all the keywords from the files (Mostly DNG's) and add them to whatever photo mechanic calls a database, I say this because in my trials to import all my photos that were managed by LR which I am happy with on the NAS Storage device and all in a Date Order which is is Year/Month/Day Format, but everytime that I try to import the keywords from LR I get them all flat, no structure, very annoying, thanks anyway, it was one of best that I have come across so far, but still cannot locate any that will help someone moving from LR to this software.

    I have been thinking for a couple hours how to politely tell you that you do not seem to understand what Photo Mechanic does. The ingest process of PM does in fact copy the files from A to B. You want to leave the images in their original location, then do not ingest them. If you are using PM 6 Plus, then you can scan your images to add the metadata to the PM 6 Plus catalog. If you are simply using PM 5 or PM 6, there is no PM catalog to import into. PM is a file browser. In the Navigator pane in PM, point to the location that LR stores the images and you can add/modify metadata. I am not entirely sure that I understand what you are trying to do in terms of importing keywords from LR. Sounds to me like you are using the product incorrectly and do not fully understand the ingest, ITPC template nor catalog features. Camera Bits does a free Photo Mechanic 101 webinar that may help you. I do beginner and intermediate/advanced workshops as well as private 1:1 sessions but they are fee-based.
