1260StedmanTriples

I’m a bellringer based mainly in Middlesex but I’m also a member of the EDACBR and SACBR.
Here you’ll see recordings that I will have taken either whilst ringing or when I’ve heard some ringing outside and taken a video.

    These bells are ringable and have an active local band. The local restoration group have recently overhauled them.... hence why they look in good order. They've recently moved upstairs to a gallery.

    Do one in Cambridge (St Botolphs) they have a 4 bell chime that was also supposed to be an unringable 4 but you can still chime them.

    Oh Retenden infamous for all the wrong reasons. The Essex boys were killed there in 1995. Anyway nuff bad stuff. Like your videos, remind me of when I was young and went on wonderful ringing tours . It was a different century and probably a different planet back then

    Have you ever rung at Southminister? I only been to that village to meet a friend but I managed to see the bells of that church but not rung them apart from belfry chiming the stayless bell during a church fete. What are their bells like to ring on if you rung them?

    The 2nd & 3rd are cracked in the crown. The 3rd is in A+ (902.0Hz) but it was 'unchimable'. The 2nd, 4th & 5th were chimed and the 2nd is in Bb+ (942.0Hz) but does sound sharper than that (more like B+). kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6iD0aiKopColLA.html

    I'm sorry you didn't complete your challenge: but you did very well. I have to say that I'm not keen on minor key bells! We're hoping to get up to Norfolk (Norwich) in January and do some ringing. I've only rung twice in Norfolk: at Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.

    Freckenham are a favourite of mine. The back four at Mildenhall are all still there on normal ringing fittings, just the ropes have been removed from the back two. The structural problems with the tower are very real and not invented for political reasons, though it wouldn’t be fatal to ring all 10 for a very short period.

  • @LapperzClapperz
    @LapperzClapperz Жыл бұрын

    Ah yes the ropes being removed may be why I thought the bells were taken out too. I do remember someone saying the bells were removed though but I suppose that’s false.

  • @tittums
    @tittums Жыл бұрын

    I am always sceptical when a tower limits ringing either by length of session or a reduction in the amount of bells that can be rung. Usually the reason is given as ''structural issues'' but I was always told the forces a ring of bells put on a tower's structure are far less than winds in a storm would. So if they say only the front 6 of a 10 can be rung to ''structural issues'' then can the back 4 each be rung singally? I have been told in the case of Mildenhall, politics are playing a part in the current decision. I would be surprised if they have removed the back two.

    I started a, admittedly somewhat tongue in cheek, discussion about getting these going again 7 or 8 years ago. They really don’t sound very good, and I think retuning them would be extremely unsatisfactory; the conclusion I came to was scrapping them would probably be the best idea; although this was all hypothetical and, obviously, has not come to fruition! The biggest problem with them, from my understanding anyway (I only live 5 miles away, and the church is within my local benefice), is the tower: it is pretty poorly built, with only the ground stage being original to the church; the upper stages are, quite clearly, Victorian. I once saw it described as: “The architect clearly got the plans for a church and a horrible brick water tower confused!”. Perhaps a little harsh, though I see where they’re coming from. The brick walls are pretty thin, and as you can see in this video (and is more evident elsewhere) there is some significant cracking in the tower. Also the frame is in a pretty poor state. A shame really, but I don’t see much happening here anytime soon!

    Rang here in about 1970! And yes, they are in C sharp, and the 2nd. is a semitone sharp - in other words they're the front 5 of a ring of 8. Some of Thomas II Mears' finest....😆

    I like the unringable bells even though it's a bit sad Actually it's like they have been abandoned and unloved. Well even churches are like that today as well. Vicars preaching sermons with no congregations.
