Dr. Light: Creates the high tech Robot Masters that have independent thought Also Dr. Light: Trust a person who’s clearly a criminal Hey, if the inventor of the Pokédex can’t even remember his own grandson’s name, this is pretty believable

Let's akchewally together... - AKCHEWALLY it makes perfect sense that Wily contined the DWN/DLN count from 9 onward. Remember, Wily was Light's assistant. He helped build those robots and ostensibly feels like he owns them no matter what may have transpired with their reformation back to Light-bots after Wily's betrayal was put down. The numbering continuing is a subtle clue to the way his mind works, the type of narcissistic personality her has. He tries to brainwash DL/WN 000 to work with him, and on several occasions tried unsuccessfully to copy DL/WN 001 as seen in boss fights in a few different Megaman games in the Wily Stages. He clearly feels some sense of ownership here, if not as though he's been cheated out of what he believes to be his. - AKCHEWALLY, no, Light's name isn't "Right" in Japan. It's ライト Ra-I-To. There's some things we need to look at here. First, Ra and I together are a two characters containing two of the three syllables in the word, and the vowel portion sounds very close to the English word "rye" when spoken together. The intention with the o in To (on syllable) would be to omit it entirely, but as the Japanese very rarely end a word on a syllable natively, they may none the less almost whisper it on the end. But again, the intent is to drop it altogether. Now, to the most important part of this word, the Ra, for which I'm sure you feel like "Aha! Told you!", but wait, there's more! The R sound in Japan is much closer to the English L sound (to akchewally myself, to be very specific, it's almost a cross between an L and a D sound, but I digress!). This is very important when we consider the context of how Raito is written. They wrote it in Katakana. The basic Japanese writing system has two alphabets (syllabaries, akchewally), Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana is analogous to our print, a very basic writing system first taught to very young kids. Katakana, however, is kind of like a cross between italics and cursive in how it's used. Both syllabaries have the same SOUNDS (99% there's an exception or two) but they are written using entirely different characters. So why is this important to Raito? Because Katakana is the syllabrie used for LOAN WORDS, among other things. Raito isn't Right. It's LIGHT, a loan word from English. The way it's written thus shows us they very purposefully chose to import this word, and indeed, the Japanese do love their loanwords. They borrow prodigiously from lots of different languages. But this brings us full circle. ライト very definitively ISN'T "Right", it's "Light".

Would ライト not also be how you spell the English loan word "Right"? And if they really were trying to use the name "Light", then why are they still using the English letter "R" for the DRN series even up until Mega Man 11? Or drawing the letter "R" for his logo like in Mega Man 9? (or like the logo shown at 6:31?)

I just like to consider the Archie comics version of events canon given how much work went into making the events of the games have natural progression and meaningful story differences. I know it's not, but it's my favorite version of the canon. Shame we'll never see it continue.

Something to consider, the difference between DLN and DWN cuts cleanly between Robot Masters designed by Capcom and the rest that are designed by submission. Almost all Robot Masters were designed by fans afterall.

Keeping the serial numbers chronological makes sense, but personally I would have made the first two characters either the initials of the creators, and in the case of collaboration, both creators. That is to say, WLN000: Blues TLN001: Rock AWN009: Metalman MCN025: Brightman Etc.

Given Robot Masters' human or near human levels of sapience and free will, I imagine the secrets for building that system are closely guarded. Maybe the tournament robots were advanced robots that were permitted to be built as or upgraded into Robot Masters by Light or the Alliance. And then global production of Robot Masters increased after that point. As for the government mandated lifespans, it could just be that a lot of the RM's were given cruelly short lifespans. These things are frequently involved in global terror events after all. I'm not as into the Classic series as BN, but I feel even Light's older models like the first 6 bosses don't appear again after the first few games, maybe they got scrapped too. Maybe Rock and Roll are also past their date and Light has to keep petitioning the government to keep them online. Rock is too useful, and Roll is harmless.

Dr. Light could have a mix of things....A) he's in denial, because some sources suggest they were originally colleagues, and he may have had a bit of hand with some of those robots (which explains why DLN 003 to 008 were captured, maybe Dr. Wily surreptiously put in some kind of "take-over chips" and activated them as part of his plan, by this point DLN 000 had gone AWOL, and Rock and Roll were seen as "not worth it" , because Dr. Wily had no idea that Rock could be "upgraded.") B) yes, Dr. Light is an expert in robots. But when it comes to humans, and emotions, and relations, and trust, and all that...he's utterly clueless. Which explains why he didn't see any red flags when strange things started happening during the whole Gamma incident. He accepted Wily's explanation hook, line, and sinker. Ok, maybe a combination of A and B.

The first Mega Man Gameboy game is actually set between Mega Man 2 and 3, so it's possible that Wily "reformed" after the events of it.

Honestly, Wily giving random robots he stole and reprogrammed Wily Number designations seems pretty on brand for him. As if by reprogramming/upgrading them for combat, they were now _his_ achievements, going so far as to essentially erase their original creators. As for the DLNs, keeping those as Doctor Light Numbers feels like Wily just being petty. Like, yes, these are Light’s creations, but Wily has stolen them from him and used them for evil. Surely it pains Light to see his robots used like this, and Wily keeping the serial numbers intact seems to serve as a constant reminder, making it all the more painful.

Considering that Dr. Light built X with free will to violate the laws of robotics, and set the capsule to let him out after 30 years of testing, well after Dr. Light expected to die of old age, and gave X thick body armor and the most advanced arm cannon made to date, that's enough to convince me that Dr. Light is just evil.

When considering the events that happen in between games, I always think of the interpretation made by the MS paint masterpieces webcomic, which straight up invents the fact that Wily had a body double made up of yellow devil goop, which is what Mega Man captured at the end of Mega Man 1, and at the end of Mega Man 2, the US government (which has had a plotline of trying to get super battle robots and trying to strongarm Dr. Light into creating them) straight up just employed Dr. Wily (who also pinned all his crimes onto Enker, who went along with it because he is a robot)

The serial number conundrum kind of sorts itself out if you assume they've been assigned numbers by the Robot Museum and are exhibit entry numbers. If the Robot Museum is using them to catalogue the history of Wily's capers, using the Light numbers for those created pre-Wily shenanigans and the Wily numbers for those after explains narratively why only those Robot Masters featuring in the games count as part of that number series.
