    SD & AB could've been my first hybrid DFs. Sadly those seeds never made it across the ocean from the US. Someone at the post office must've been interested in small, unregistered mail from the States. Great that the mail from Oz got through somehow. Again, thanks mate.

    At least if you start a few at the same time you should be right to cross pollinatr them (might have some issues if seed siblings though). Just feel bad for newbies that start off with just one cutting that ends up being self sterile 😢

    good video again. i have had rot i left alone and it wasn't a big deal and ive also cut away rot either tactic seemed to work. though if its getting bad its probably best to cut it out. never heard of sprinkling cinnamon in the wound to stop it from rotting again, best bet is to do it in a dry period. good tips in here though cheers.

    25:30, you can create a new hybrid through grafting. You have to split two different young cuttings vertically through the core and graft them together. Then, remove new growth until the growth resembles neither of the parent plants. I believe it's referred to as somatic fusion. Wallace Ranch made a hybrid this way using sugar dragon and Vietnamese white. The hybrid makes fruit the size of the Vietnamese giant, but the inside of the fruit looks and tastes like sugar dragon. I highly recommend you check it out and if you have the time you might want to try it yourself, it might make for an interesting video for the channel.

    Hey mate Have seen those videos. Super, super rare, almost impossible to replicate. Tried it a few times with no success myself 😭 The thought did cross my mind when i was ranting and raving to drop it in re somatic grafts.. not sure if i paused or not, havnt rewatched it.. but you are 100% correct, you can.. but conventional grafting will give you fruit of the root stock or the grafted material. Great addition though mate 👌 hopefully the comments made post live are visable to anyone who watches it down the track 👍

    I have an infertile red fruit species that I eventually found I needed to cross pollinate to bare fruit. I used a self pollinating white species. Will the hybrid red fruit dragon now be a self pollinating species? The fruit was great, but having pollen available for the night it flowers is a pain.

    Two things are making mine suffer: exposure to sw wind and left fruit on them to rot. I’ve also noticed on one of them thats self fertile if I cross pollinate for large fruit late in the season the branches that have produced can die in winter. If I don’t cross pollinate, it fairs much better. Might do some seasol spray trials on it next autumn.

  • @DreaminDragons
    @DreaminDragons21 күн бұрын

    If your plants are churning through their energy to fuel the fruit, 100% leaves the branches more susceptible to rot/ cold. I usually knock any bud off that wont be ripe before winter for this exact reason 👌

    True true. I've heard mixed reviews of those fruit salad grafted citrus.. Theres definitely a tendency for faster growth through the rootstock, but because of the nature of how a dragon fruit grows, you'll still easily get both varieties thriving 👌

    Does anyone measure the branches? And does it make a lot of sense? At least to understand the limits of variability. Fruit is usually well documented, but in isolation from the particular plant on which it grew. Clearly, the species with the most massive branches don't always produce the largest fruit (Godzilla, Laverne red and Vietnamese giant as examples), but it would be interesting to see statistics at least within a single species or variety. Palora and other megalantuses are probably the most interesting in this respect, as it seems to me that this should influence not only the size, but also the ripening period

  • @DreaminDragons
    @DreaminDragonsАй бұрын

    That is a really interesting question, and i would 100% be lying if i gave you any answer at all on this. You'd like to think that a plump and healthy plant would give bigger fruit than a skinny one, but definitely some varieties are just known to pop out big fruit and others small. I really wish i could give you something more than that.. maybe someone might stumble across your comment and enlighten us 🤷🏽‍♂️ Thanks for joining today, very fascinated with your geography and this hobby of ours!
