    I liked the poaching video and your presentation style. Had a question with regard to the movement toward the net and if you include ‘reads’ with the partner’s service target wide it T?

  • @StokkeTennis

    Yes, but as I showed with the angles it's much more subtle than people think.

  • @ReidVV

    Your math is the same on both scenarios you just counted less shots, but the drill is still a good idea.

  • @ReidVV

    The server needs to stand near the center mark and serve down the T and the net player can 100% forget the alley and poach the center and cross court returns HARD! Directional serve control is a MUST! Also, I disagree with ignoring the alley in the scenario in your video as the pattycake serve angled wide is easily taken down the line past the net player by any competent returner.

    The lottery ticket tip here is the two fast into one slow ball though. Something that simple, yet I've only thought about it the other way (fast and then faster). Hit with some players with 2 or more UTR ratings above me, felt I could hang in the neutral rally, then they just turn up the speed some % and I make a mistake. Never thought about going at it at a fast pace, then on purpose slow it down. Do think I need to practice my rally ball more. Tend to just adapt to my opponent, if they hit hard/fast I try to do the same. If they hit slow loopy balls I do the same.

    Hi Coach, I Just started playing singles again after a 24 year hiatus from tennis, I have been back a year now. When I started playing tennis again I started playing Doubles and I was very good at doubles, I have a lot more confidence in my knowledge of doubles! So I about a month ago I started playing singles again and I have had two hip replacements so I was moving that fast, but I lost 40 pounds in a year from training off your videos and Nick from Intuitive Tennis. So in about a month I have played about 8 sets of tennis I lost close sets and have won really close ones! I was thinking about quitting until I seen your video about you counting errors and what your plan was before the tie breaker, and I realized that I had no plan whatsoever when I played singles, I was just playing the game of tennis and just reacting to shots and playing with athleticism and running around with no plan for the match. I started to think about how I was going to attack the second serves and play more balls down the middle of the court. I also am going to use a slice serve and mix up my serves, I am also going to use the sets as practice sets and play comfortably and use more slices and placements. I think that if I keep a record of errors and winners I will be able to fix the strategies if things don’t work! My main goal is to move faster and anticipate the ball earlier. I also have a new racquet I ordered so it will be nice to play with a tennis Racquet that wasn’t made in 1990. Haha I love Profile 95s but it is time to retire them. Thanks Coach for the inspiration and good teaching my friend.

    Amazing, i have a partner who is stubborn on this subject, wanting to hit the ball harder and harder but losing the point of being consistent, its so annoying. Btw, does this apply for the serve too? If i hit hard but my serve % is really low, i suppose i have to at least reduce the speed a little bit to try to find some rhythim

  • @Lucian86

    @@StokkeTennis I have a nice game, I think but to win often I play ugly. I hate it but it works. My strategy is more or less this: - always return the ball in the middle (just like you). Never attack a return which is very hard. I also use Roger's old tactics (not just on return) by slicing the ball short and invite them to the net. Surprised how effective it is - hitting flat and long. Comfortable with that, especially on my 1h backhand. - when I use an approach shot and come to the net, I often go to their body. They'll have little time to adjust and feel the pressure. I would also volley to their body often

    So By extension , I would think missing a serve into the net is also inexcusable? The serve is the shot that we have complete control. I've always tried to hit my serve so that if I have to miss, I'd rather miss long. I noticed that missing a first serve long is also better mentally when you hit the second serve. Now you'd you tell yourself, more top spin to get the second serve in. Also, if I double fault, mentally I'd still feel better missing long.

  • @StokkeTennis
    @StokkeTennis2 күн бұрын

    First serves should be hit aggressively, as it's literally a free shot in tennis. If you hit your first serve with great pace, then some need to be missed in the net as you can't have great height AND speed on a serve. I do think missing a second serve in the net is inexcusable. Those should be played with a little more height for sure.

  • @tomsd8656
    @tomsd86562 күн бұрын

    But of course, if you attack short balls, then we need to aim lower, not 3 ft above the net.

    Just to add to an earlier comment on a different video - I definitely think you're content is improving my tennis IQ - thx. This video coupled with your podcast featuring Dustin Taylor really helped me appreciate about how the ball's incoming trajectory influences the "optimal" (quoting you again) reply/shot selection (ie contact point/swing path you need to make it). Understanding how these factors directly influence the true relative position of the 'back of the ball' has really helped me commit to my shots. I know too that one of my big improvement opportunities is recognising and moving up to short balls - really practical and straightforward appreciate your advice on how to do this. Discipline leading to freedom - rule 3 non heavy bounces on service line - move into the court, take it early and drive it.!

    Can you talk about the timing? If you have a partner w/ a slow serve or fast serve? I assume you take your step forward when serve is contacted, and then split step / pivot to the middle just before the receiver makes contact? Do you wait for the ball to bounce? Do you change your position based on whether the serve is to the T or wide?

    Awesome video - thanks! I got a couple of points there, particularly the positioning and I like the little foot-turn as they are hitting. __ As a returner, I normally hammer the first return (or an early return) HARD down-the-line, as a message to the net player, that I will go DTL. If/when I nail that, it instantly deflates the serving team an puts them on notice. Add in a couple of well placed return lobs and the net player then has 3 shots to think about, leaving a bit more room for cross-court through the middle. The challenge for the net player, is to get the returner, worrying about what the net player is going to do, instead of focusing on their shot. (That distracts them and makes them change their mind on the shot they are playing, causing bad decisions and errors and frustration). Faking a cross is great for this too. The challenge as a returner, is to get the net player worried about what we are going to do. If we pass them down-the-line a couple of times (early), then most amateur players will worry about their line. Maybe their serving partner gets angry at them, for letting the ball through. A couple of return lobs, gets them thinking about high balls so maybe they have to stand back a bit. All of that can limit the 'sharking' at the net. Happy hitting. Andy, Brisbane.

    Loved the full podcast. I think the hardest thing to accept in sport is that it isn't the great shots that matter most to the game (although they obviously do wonders for your state of mind), it's the ability to do the right thing time and time again - with that generally being the best percentage play with margins that take out failure - or as you guys put it playing the rational optimal shot time and time again - recognising that (esp in extremes) this flexes for in the situation you're in - the crossing the road with a pack of lions being a good case in point. For me the best players are not just the best tacticians, they are the most disciplined - which ties back to meditation imo. Anyway - great job!
