It’s not idealism vs realism. It’s optimism vs pessimism. That’s why one country created Silicon Valley and another country created Gulag.

I’m bilingual in Spanish and English and I find easier to learn Russian when I’m thinking in Spanish. Time ago, I asked if it was easier to learn it from Spanish or from English. I was told it didn’t make difference but it definitely does. When I try with an English speaker teacher, it’s harder for me to understand the sounds. But, when I learn it with a Spanish speaker teacher or books, etc, it’s easier. Now, after learning the Russian alphabet, I’m able to write simple words but I can read more complex ones. At first, was difficult to “separate” the words when listening to Russian music or a Russian speaker such as President Putin. In every language, the words seem to be spoke all together and it makes it more difficult to understand it. So, I decided to listen to Russian music for long periods of time and trying to sing them as I did before with the English language. Now, I’m able to recognise separated words and even sing along. It made me so happy to realise I was able now to recognise words like “how”, “hello”, “thank you”, “tomorrow”, “never”, “always”, “love”, etc. All of it without studying at all. Only listening to music. I jump of happiness when President Putin speaks and I get some of the words and I understand them. I recognise those words and I’m over the moon. Anyway. I’m 62 years old and I’m learning Russian, therefore, everyone else can do it. Do not stop trying. Thank you, teacher, because this class, did help me to get a, yet better understanding of some of the “strange” signs that were resisting. 🌹

Very informative and entertaining, thank you. These cultural/lexical differences in languages are amusing. Hello is an interesting one. In English it is used for a greeting, but in most European languages it is also used to attract attention (but not in English) and in French the word allo is not used as a greeting at all except when you are on the telephone when it is the standard greeting word. I think Привет works like hello in English and notlike hello in many European languages German for example, that is to say Привет is only used as a greeting. It is never used to attract attention, am I right?

In Slovenia the magic cure is žganje - a "brandy" that is distilled from plums, or apples, or pears or a combination. In the past, it was usually homemade; nowadays it can be purchased in the stores but also often received free-of-charge from any friends who live on farms and distill it there. Yes, like tea for Russians, žganje for Slovenes is good for all that ails you - even put on wounds, since the alcohol will kill bacteria! Perhaps, it was similar in Russia long ago! Slovenes migrated from Russia several centuries ago.
