  I think you may be a bit off on some of it. Since it was originally a mod for half-life 2 it could be argued the possibility the game is meant to take place within the same post apocalyptic version of earth that half-life was thrust into. In short, it was meant to be a barren, post apocalyptic, sandbox horror game. The feeling of dread is intentional. Imo.

  I've never been afraid to play alone but downloaded a addon named umbrella man and it change my perspective towards being alone, I was never scared to go in the dark room in gmod but the second I played with the umbrella man installed it changed single player games for me.

  If you want to feel sacred spawn a horror mod/nextbod in a liminal space map such as poolrooms or the backrooms and just knowing something is there but not knowing where will really creep you put

  Unlike 80% of commenters, I have spent most of my time in Singleplayer completely unphased by the non-horror maps. 1500 of my 1650 hours are single player. I even have an addon that adds an entity that watches me so i can occasionally catch him and kill him.

  Sometimes I've just been scrolling on youtube shorts on an afternoon and I would suddenly just stop, pause the video, and look around. Silence. I turn my head to the window and not a thing stirs. I stare at random objects while wondering what I'm doing sitting in my room and for how long. I then snap out of it and go back to mindlessly scrolling.

  Ok, so I had an incident I had a few minutes ago.. I was doing unrecord stuff until I came across this room.. It had a ragdoll inside the bathtub, dead. When I walked past it I heard a sudden noise of a ragdoll moving, I checked back then.. The dead ragdoll was moving. The creepiest part was.. It had the umbrella man behind the bathtub.

  This happened to me at Tate Britain. I was looking at a small cloudscape by John Constable. I looked over my shoulder as I wanted to step back for a better look. I realised I was entirely alone in a large gallery, surrounded by millions of pounds worth of art, and they were all mine. No other human was seeing what I was seeing. For a short period I owned them. Ever since that day I have understood why people steal art just for themselves alone and not for the money.

  Idea: If Gargin 2.0 SUCCEEDS in a chase 3 times in a row, he will chase the player for a bit, then find an alternate path that ends up directly in front of the player, like it's playing with them. But wouldn't actually kill them.

  for me, the creepiness isn't the feeling of being alone, it's the feeling that i'm not QUITE alone, that feeling of "There's something wrong with this." and the horror for me is feeling that within this world, something is not right, but not being able to find the cause or put my finger on it.

  I live in a rural area and the grocery stores often have "slow days" where they're nearly empty and it's just you and maybe one or two other people. It's kind of a weird feeling. I'm used to it because I experience it a lot, but it always seems kind of like there should be more people there. On a side note, I wonder if I'm kind of a human version of a liminal space in a sense. I always wear sunglasses, even indoors and at night, and so many why sunglasses at night and indoors unnerve people is because you expect to see them in a sunny day context and in another context they might look "eerie" to people. Is such a thing possible?
