Cool little mod I did to my flip top was drill a hole through the threads on the struts for the top and put a clip instead of a nut, that way if it’s getting in the way you can pull the clips out and flip the top down. Got the idea from my coworkers blue point cart which was designed that way. Sliding top is nice but takes up more room, not a big deal if you are in a bigger shop but I’m a little tight for room so it’s all preference

This addiction to Mac and Snapon is like a modern day form of slavery. You work all day but then blow a chunk of your earnings on tools that cost 5-10X more than they should. It's like mechanics have brainwashed themselves to donate a chunk of their revenue to some corporation just so they can proudly display that company's logo. A mechanic with a Mac/Snapon is little different from a shallow Valley girl with a $5000 designer purse that is really no better than a $20 purse.

@@reallyreallywrenching That's right...once one is in this cult they can never stop drinking the coolaid. One must never stop justifying....but hey, if you want to pay $150 for a tool that costs $8 to manufacture in parts and labor just so you can showoff the logo to your buddies then be my guest. F'ing morons....

Just got Mac PT SAE wrench set today from 1/4-15/16. I have the metric ones already. Hands down the best wrenches I’ve ever laid my hands on and I would have paid double for them. And they’re not USA made. invest in their RBRT line! Worth all the money.

It's a shame that Stanley Black and Decker is introducing Taiwanese tools into the Mac lineup. I don't mind Taiwanese tools as they do a good job. I just can't see paying US tool prices for made in Taiwan tools. When I started out in the late 80s Matco was the budget professional tool line. I bought a lot of my specialty tools from Matco. As of late Matco's pricing is getting ridiculous. I'd be interested in seeing videos of your 65 Chevy. Sounds like a fun project. Long bed step sides are kind of rare.

  • @chrxx4327

I mean, it does suck that mac pushes so much taiwan stuff. But I wouldn't say they are charging US tool prices for made in taiwan. The Precision torque wrenches are like half the price of the knuckle saver wrenches that are made in the USA. I like the precision torque wrenches more anyway.

I work on euros quite regularly, they are pretty common here in Aus, part that annoys me the most is how over complicated they seem to be vs a lot of Asian cars I see.

My complaint about euro cars is their reliability issues. Anything from this millenium is designed to fail by 100,000 miles or less. And, just to get to 100k, you're going to spend a lot of money in maintenance and repairs. My stable has nothing but Japanese designed vehicles and 2/3 of them were built in Japan. My Honda S2k has been run hard, but still runs like a top at 178k with only maintenance and minor repairs. My Infiniti has 120k and has only needed catalytic converters. My 97 LR Discovery required constant repairs and a new engine by 115k. The entire time, if there was no oil under it, there was no oil in it. That was my only stupid foray into euro-garbage. My buddies' BMWs? Constant repairs and even a transmission on one's 328xi. Audi owned by the office? Good luck getting even an oil change anywhere but the dealer as no one made a filter for it. I get it, though, European drivers are driving a lot to get to 80k miles in 12 years, so an inability to reach 100k miles doesn't really matter since their domestic markets rarely get that high.

When I started back in the 90's there were not a lot of options for quality hand tools besides for the tool trucks....now, it's a whole different ball game. Get one paycheck ahead and you don't need to use that truck credit to buy overpriced rebranded tools.

Hey brotha. I build these things all the time. What I specialize in. I would do yourself a quick favor….. check the ic’s in the supercharger. These tend to leak in the combustion chamber too. Just flip the sc over and you can inspect. Gaskets are unheard of. Since shes not warped I wouldn’t suspect head gaskets. Either way good luck boss. Keep grinding!

There's a reason bmw's and audi's are very prevalent in highschool parking lots. Once they are out of warranty sell asap, or reap the over cost of the entire vehicles in repairs.

ya in my honest opinion it also varies between the german manufacturers, i worked on all of them, really not a fan of audi’s anymore either, bmw’s are ok just seems like there quality of plastic is worst than everyone else, my favourite is mercedes and porsche to work on personally, they seem more reliable from my experience and the tear downs are usually more straight forward my favourite engine is the honda j series j30 j32 expecially the j35 creamy powerful descent on gas and not hard to work on 👍

It's funny you should mention not being able to scan the car. Have you tried VCDS? They are an American company that specializes in VAG diagnostic software and hardware. I own an Audi (granted it is an old beater) and I am from Europe and, ironically, it is harder for me to find a proper VAG diagnostic tool over here.

I have had vagcom since 2009. And due to secret key code availability. Previous models vag com could adjust in minutes. That IS A BIG DEAL

Why are you using the wrong battery on that 3/8 matco impact? That's probably why it doesn't work well for you. I have one and it works great. I've pulled lug nuts off of some cars with it. I don;t necessarily think it was worth the money, but it's never let me down.

Yeah, my dealer misdiagnosed my 9 year old Benz, they didn't stand behind any warranty or admit they messed up, wanted me to pony up more money instead, began the blame game because I used different oil and a OEM filter, literally the exact same filter and oil with MB approval rating and weight. But they got my money for the wrong parts, if I even got new parts, because it makes the same rattle on startup. I was forced to the dealer because every shop I was recommended said they couldn't do it. Back when I was able, I did them all. I fell in love with German cars because of that, now I can barely change oil and no one will help me.

Special tools, special software, special sockets for stupid fasteners. People don't like having to make a specific commitment to each brand because they intentionally chose to do things the hard way for no good reason. There's a reason the japanese put the rest of the globe to shame. I wouldn't want to be the service guy having to tell the customer it's going to take another 3 days to finish because they need to order more special tool kits for this one particular engine.

I'm a former SAAB mechanic whose specialty was the 79-93 900 series. Every independent shop tech I knew literally hated SAABs. "You must be crazy to work on those" they'd say. I found them relatively simple, and enjoyable, to work on. I was one who felt uncomfortable stepping away from my comfort zone. I was asked to work on my customers "other" vehicles. In the end it's all just nuts and bolts like you say. A true technician is a guy who is not afraid to tackle any make or model that comes his way. I always had a lot of admiration for the independents who worked on whatever rolled in the door.

I'm just a DIYer but I've wrenched on a variety of vehicles from Ford, Honda, Mitsubishi, GM, VW, etc and I totally agree with you. In my experience the Germany cars aren't any worse than stuff you see on some American cars like ford, and even the newer Honda's and Toyotas are very complicated and can be difficult to work on. German cars always use the latest technology first, but now we're seeing this same tech used in every car brand. So yeah, it's all the same, just different sockets needed.
