Never thought I'd see a decent stereo by Soundesign...made in Japan too! But I do have some concerns on the ratings of the amp...10 watts from 80Hz - 20kHz, I guess Soundesign didn't design low frequencies into this setup? Most likely due to the fact the speakers it came with couldn't reproduce all that low frequency mumbo jumbo
thanks for demonstrating this cool monstrosity. BTW, how did you guess I like listening to right wing talk radio 😊
Nope. Not 'ultimate' without a phonograph - if that am/fm display "bar" actually opened&retracted to reveal a phonograph player, as the thumbnail suggests.... but does not deliver!
2024: Selling 40TB Flash drive for $55
What a beautiful bit of kit
The butt of jokes when it was new, all this needs is a 50W RMS amplifier to be amazing. Good tuner - check Digital clock - check Good cassette deck - check Fantastic sounding 8 track - seriously 8 track sucks but somehow this one sounds good even the recording! Magnetic cartrage LP turntable in - check Aux in for CD player - check It's too bad they didn't put any real output power behind all that good stuff. Edit: I kinda want one and update the amplifier to 100w RMS per channel.
Somehow the one my mom had in the attic for 10 years and was being used in the hot and humid climate of Cuba and the Bahamas works fine. with how hot our attic gets (1000 degrees celsius) Im surprised it worked when I dug it out 8 years ago.
I thought the 8-track was the star, cool functionality and sounds great too
Nope. Woodgrain and silver? Sure, but not my thing. Magnetic and Ceramic Phono Inputs? Best thing here! Futuristic LEDs next to VUs? Mêh. But the VUs should be GIGANTIC.
my sister and I both had several Soundesign stereos over the years. I even ha the SoundDesign entertainment center with the Sound Design 20" TV, dual tape deck, record player, and the like. Thought I was hot stuff. That TV turned out to be decent.
They made great devices
Very futuristic.
Looks like you lucked into a lightly-used and well-stored unit. I lived through an era in which Soundesign was one of the three or four brands broke or uninformed or grandma people bought (Emerson was one of the others). However, many people who never played music at high volumes and didn't use the stereo much were happy with these systems.
What a beast!
I’m almost certain that I had this system when I was a teenager. Played a lot of music through it. Good times. 😁
Soundesign was just horrifying junk. Obviously, you were too young to experience this stuff when it was new. The sound was cardboard . I always felt sorry for the poor souls who bought this stuff. Some being my own relatives. It was overpriced and low quality. It was a heartbreaking purchase. It usually just made poor people poorer......with terrible sound accompanying them to the poorhouse.
WOW... great video. Please, keep up the good work.
Similar design to the Sony Fx999 with 2 x heads.
Imagine if they made a Walkman version :)
The title should say "Ultimate LO-FI..." Sound system as these low-end units were, pretty much all show and no go. They were okay for a child's bedroom or background music, but not for casual or critical listening. Soundesign, Lloyds, Yorx, Emerson, were all alike in low end sound systems back in the day. They were often seen in mail order catalogs, such as Service Merchandise, or Consumers Distributing.
I see you’re in the DC area. Are you a MAARC member?
No, I'm in NJ.
the olds 98 of hifi
It is magnificent.🎉
Love it , guessing an almighty 10 watts per channel with a mere 3% THD
A Techmoan Cameo, oh so nice indeed!
Too bad that by 1980 they had figured out how to make plastic look vaguely like metal. Even todays up market Yamaha amps with 70s aesthethics aren't free from this plague.
The front panel is aluminum.
I have one of these in awesome condition with all original knobs. These are excellent units. Great review of this system!
Wow! What a wonderful stereo music centre it is by the brand Soundesign!!! I am impressed as i have never seen such type of design which is bigger than the Technics SA-370S music centre. Btw, is the rated power output 10 Watts (RMS) per channel!? Thank you for the video!
Spot on marketing with this : look at my hi-fi ! Subscribed ( Uk ) , we had Amstrad and Binatone !
I really like the combination of wood and aluminum. Not even for the "retro" factor, its just a good looking design. Sadly the manufacturers mostly used fake wood and fake aluminum, so this design got its image as "tacky" and people moved on.
They were junk i remember.
the recorded message sounds like something right out of the walten files ksjdfdhk
The facia of this beast is not "chrome"
Those were the days of this receiver
You can tell its quality by that Deluxe Perforated Ventilated Turbo-Masonite Rear Panel©®™
13:18 It appears Donald Trump fell back to a career in politics when his stand up comic routine failed.
A whole 10 watts woohoo!!!!
00:00:27 So this is what you did before buying alignment shims from me. Hmm.
10w RMS
They were trying to imitate the Sansui Big G Series, it's apparent in the styling. Great for children who's parents had limited resources.
" I am speaking from the depths of hell. My name is Lucinda..."
Soundesign is JUNK. Pioneer, Kenwood, Sansui, Marantz they were the good ones! 10 watts at 1% THD??? That's uterly terrible!
Phase-Locked Ludicrous...
An analog tuner with a digital display is pretty damn cool. And I suspect that tuner is a tuning capacitor and not a potentiometer which would make it even better.
Not high fidelity by any stretch. Cheap quality unit sold at department stores along with electrophonic, Lloyd’s, and other lower priced stereos of the era.
This would be good to use the original radios in older cars from the 50s
I remember getting one of thesein my shop back in the late 80s for repair !
Reminds me of my old YORX and Harmontz equipment.
you forgot one thing... Disco Stu doesn't advertise!
"Ultimate" is kind of a stretch. Awful lot of hardware for a whopping 10 watts, probably good for impressing stoned teenagers, though, until they crank it up and it turns into a fuzzbox.
