Nice video of your trip to the park! That lens is very nice for sure! My Ansco Speedex Special R is identical to yours but with the Apotar 85 f4.5. Not as nice as the Solinar but still a lot of fun to use. Yes, the green grease from hell was a lot of fun to break loose. Not as bad as the lens on my Ansco Viking 4.5. I just about gave up on that one. I too went with a CLA and new bellows to give these great camera a new lease on life.

Factoid: Robert Peterson of Hot Rod Magazine fame used a Super Ikonta 531A (6x4.5 format) for the early car pictures used in the magazine. The camera is currently on display at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, Ca.

Note that the version of the Isolette III he has in the video is fairly rare, being the best and most expensive lens/shutter option. The Color-Solinar is a Tessar copy design, but is as good or better. Future comparison: The Isolette versus and Konica Pearl III or IV (same lens).

Isolette III is my favourite 6x6 camera. If you look at the aperture ring, you will see a red dot, it means it is the sharpest aperture

I think you will find that the dot marker in the focus scale ties in with an aperture scale marker. Together, they set the camera at a hyperfocal distance to create a depth of field covering most focus points without having to manually reset focus for each shot.

It was my favorite film stock ever. I used to bulk load the heck of it. I miss Kodak rc paper also. The Blacktones 🤩. I just don’t like tmax tones, love tri x, but I refuse to shoot it in anything smaller than 6x6. I’m gonna have to grab double x. Illford is icky. Gray tones forever

I have been shooting with my Cambo 6x12 back and am getting a scratch across the middle of the shots. I think there is a burr or something inside it and need to get ut fixed. That said, aside from the savings I get from shooting color in 120 to save money (the reason I only shoot color on my 4x5. If I wanted a pano aspect ratio on 4x5 ideally i would just shoot 4x5 Provia and just crop.

I have been having the same issue with a large scratch down the middle of my negatives. I have tried my best but have had no luck finding the source. I also get frequent light leaks through the light trap. I actually disassembled the light trap and inspected the material used to prevent leak. The material was in great shape still, so it's been a challenge solving that issue. I've also tried leaving the dark slide partially inserted into the light trap but that doesn't seem to help.

I am taking it into have the cam mechanics take it apart and see what's up. I find it more than interesting that you have the same problem.

My 530 6x4.5 cm Super Ikonta A (c. 1937) is the favorite camera in my collection. A pocket medium format with an excellent rangefinder, sharp lens, and still in excellent condition. The engineering of their rangefinders was brilliant. Thank-you for highlighting this line of cameras.

I think in aligning the film while loading with 120 you use the circle window for the arrow alignment, not the square one.

Nicely done! we have the same National Park as a playground for photos! I have an Ansco Viking with a 105mm 4.5. Not the same as that fine Voigtlander you have but it takes a nice sharp 6x9 image. So much fun playing with film again! I recently purchased an inexpensive Klein Tools laser distance finder the I think will work great with my Ansco. It measures in feet or meters and matched the distance I get on my SLR lenses when testing it.

I’ve heard that utility rangefinders and golf rangefinders work quite well for such circumstances! Nowadays I use an old external Voigtländer rangefinder. It also works well with my 6x6 Perkeo II

@@ExpiredBren I had been looking for a nice rangefinder by Voigtländer or other manufactures for a while when I found the Klein Tools finder. I'm looking forward to trying it out. I also have a Ansco Speedex Special R (for rangefinder) that shoots 6x6. I got them both fairly cheap and couldn't resists getting new bellows and CLA for both. It sounds like you have some nice cameras! Folding cameras are really fun to use even though they really make you think more about every shot!

Great video! I love that you captured the requisite banana slug so commonly found in the redwoods. Really enjoyed seeing the comparison between Ektar and Portra, seems to me that the redwoods are a good environment for both. I’m not really a fan of how Ektar renders the sky so “the woods” make for a nice backdrop. Looking forward to seeing more adventures!

That was a nicely put together presentation. You have discovered the Rollei 35 of the medium format 120 world. Like a Rollei 35, its ergonomics require a go slow approach. Yet, its small size belies its capabilities in the field.

Nice vid and work! I did comment on one of your IG Perko posts long ago 😂 took me a bit to mentally attach the personas on both platforms. Life sent me the way of Zeiss Ikon with a Nettar and then a Super Ikonta IV and the Perkeos have been on my crosshairs but never managed to get any. For me, the benchmarking point to compare folders are the features: lens (Tessar type or Cooke Triplet), VR-RF, auto advance/red window and shutters. My first medium format and darling is a Fuji 6x9 which spoiled me with its modern sharp lens. To compare, one needs to stop down the folder lenses (bar camera condition w/ alignment) and past f8-11 it's nice. In any case, a more vintage rendering that is nice! I incorporated the folders as "B" cameras and for variation, as I have no interchangeable back camera. Back in 1956 one of these was "the family camera" and well delivered.

The Perkeo has served as a great B camera to mix in with my Pentax 67. Although most of my photos from the Dolomites were handheld, I usually have a quick release plate attached so I can shoot with it stopped down on the same tripod as my P67.

That was a nicely put together presentation. You have discovered the Rollei 35 of the medium format 120 world. Like a Rollei 35, its ergonomics require a go slow approach. Yet, its small size belies its capabilities in the field.
The Rollei 35 and Perkeo make for a great comparison! I happen to have a Rollei 35 SE loaded in my hiking backpack with my Pentax 67 at all times
Nice vid and work! I did comment on one of your IG Perko posts long ago 😂 took me a bit to mentally attach the personas on both platforms. Life sent me the way of Zeiss Ikon with a Nettar and then a Super Ikonta IV and the Perkeos have been on my crosshairs but never managed to get any. For me, the benchmarking point to compare folders are the features: lens (Tessar type or Cooke Triplet), VR-RF, auto advance/red window and shutters. My first medium format and darling is a Fuji 6x9 which spoiled me with its modern sharp lens. To compare, one needs to stop down the folder lenses (bar camera condition w/ alignment) and past f8-11 it's nice. In any case, a more vintage rendering that is nice! I incorporated the folders as "B" cameras and for variation, as I have no interchangeable back camera. Back in 1956 one of these was "the family camera" and well delivered.
The Perkeo has served as a great B camera to mix in with my Pentax 67. Although most of my photos from the Dolomites were handheld, I usually have a quick release plate attached so I can shoot with it stopped down on the same tripod as my P67.
