Hello I'm Liz Ackerley a UK-based contemporary abstract mixed media artist. I create paintings about places that help people see the landscape in new and exciting ways. The paintings are abstract or semi abstract. The energy of the places as well as their marks and feel are conveyed through the media. They are dynamic expressive works with a sense of time and place.
In this channel I share my love of mixed media art and show my processes and techniques both out on location in the landscape and back in the studio. I work on paper, in sketchbooks, in journals and on wood and canvas. I share my drawing, mark making and painting processes as I create works-warts and all!
I also share my travel adventures in my campervan and mobile studio, Cassandra. The camper enables me to combine travel and art.

Not sure if I missed this but what kind of paper are you using for the base?
It’s a SeaWhite of Brighton pocket concertina sketchbook
Definitely worth a visit 😊
I think these are some of my favourites of all your works Liz, amazingly expressive and evocative drawings
Thanks so much Lois- I really enjoyed doing these as a start point for the ramshackle works. As usual I needed some less conventional routes in! I think that’s an important part of it. Nudging away from convention helps with freedom and becoming less representational at the same time as being firmly connected with the subject.
@@LizAckerley absolutely, the blind contour drawing while focusing on the location sketches looks like an exciting way to maintain that deep connection with your subject while simultaneously taking the abstraction a step further
Enjoyed your process & love the paintings in every stage - Thankyou
Thank you I’m so glad you enjoyed the video.
So interesting! I watched twice.
Thank you!- I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Liz, your videos are always inspiring and so interesting to see your process
Hi Mary, thank you for your feedback. I am so glad that you enjoyed the video. It's always fun to see how others do things. I have to admit that I don't ever settle on the same approach; always tweaking and adjusting as I go!
Hey 👋
"It has the feeling of longevity" -beautiful garden. Your painting approach is inspiring. Thank you.
Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed the video.
Fabulous inspiration again. Thank you
Thank you Anna - I’m glad it was useful.
So exciting to see this process Liz, by coincidence I've been working on a similar idea of extending a small stuck on sketch into a larger piece, although my pieces are representational studies of a local harbour and beach
Hello Lois I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It’s good to shake things up a bit isn’t it? Interesting that you’ve been doing something similar - I really enjoy it as a technique. And I think there’s a lot more to be got from them back in the studio. Happy painting and drawing!
Good video again Liz. There is something changing in your work. Not only the colors are different but also the forms. I love to see it.
Hi and thank you- I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. Ooh that’s an interesting observation- I didn’t realise but I’m not surprised. I guess the more we psint, the more our work evolves- how exciting!
Hi 👋
Interesting. I have been drawing my own garden and intend to draw at the allotments. Drawing foliage is quite challenging, but worth the effort. Also, adding watercolour is interesting. I like the paintings you've done.
Hello thank you for your comments . Great that you’ve been drawing your own garden and allotments. It’s a brilliant way of connecting with those spaces and what’s important to you. I think for me I’m just trying to reflect the essence feel of the foliage rather than it literally - that can make it easier or at least more manageable.
Inspiring
Thank you- this is one of may approaches I take with collage- it’s included in my new online course ( bug in much more detail) : lizackerley.podia.com/your-collage-compositions
Thank you Liz for generously sharing your process. That was so useful
You are welcome. I’m glad you found the video useful. Nice to be sharing some studio process again.
Very interesting process. Thanks for sharing. Lovely work.
Hello Deborah I am glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. Early days but hopefully I can evolve this group of work in the coming weeks.
Thank you Liz, it was wonderful to see that gorgeous garden and very interesting to see your process.
You are very welcome- I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video- yes the garden is fabulous isn’t it?
So very lovely Liz!
Thank you so much Pam- I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Enjoyed that very much Liz, thank you. It's always interesting to see how you move through the various stages, from inspiration to early studies to beginning your paintings. Love the colour palette too!
Thank you so much Jillayne, I am so glad it was helpful. I always find the colours in the summer garden rather gorgeous so I am trying to reflect them here. I usually use a more limited colour palette so will see whether I end up with different and more minimal palettes in some. Time will tell. It's early days!
Hey 👋
This is gorgeous I will have to check out your class ❤❤❤ thank you!
Thank you Kelly. In case you didn't see the link. Here is the course: lizackerley.podia.com/your-collage-compositions
This was really inspiring, I really appreciated your generous commentary, sharing your thoughts about materials, techniques and approach as you experience the landscape, so helpful. The first drawing is amazing, so expressive and loose, wonderful mark making - a finished work in its own right
@@LoisDavidsonArt thank you so much Lois - I’m so glad that you enjoyed it and found it helpful. Being out in the landscape is always rewarding.
I love your videos and seeing you paint out of your Van..abstract is hard for me but watching you I'm learning to be more free. Thank you❤
@@jennifernichols8403 thank you so much- I’m thrilled you enjoy the videos and find them helpful.
Fascinating and insightful, I loved seeing how you work through ideas for your work and find it very inspiring. I'm still deciding which course to sign up for, difficult decision Liz, they all look tempting!
Thanks Lois I’m so glad it was helpful. With respect to the courses I’m glad they all sound tempting! I hope you would enjoy which ever one you chose.
Splendid…inspiring, I would feel less daunted now to go out with a clutch of papers …thank you!
Hi Jennie, I am so glad the video was helpful. I think it's just a case of keeping it simple when we are out and about. In my new online course several if not all of the approaches I take can be done on location (provided you have the papers created and this is also part of the course) lizackerley.podia.com/your-collage-compositions.
These are stunning, I love the way you have used collage and mark-making capture the landscape in front to of you. Inspiring stuff! Thanks Liz
Thanks Lois I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. I have 3 online courses and one is about mark making and the other that’s just released is about collage. They are great techniques for capturing the spirit and feel of a place.
@@LizAckerley Thanks Liz, I'll take a look. I'm a full time watercolour landscape artist in my 'day job' but am looking to push forward into something a bit different in my own personal work, so sounds interesting!
Hi Lois ah yes - that’s amazing and quite different to the sorts of work I do but as ever there is always overlap and things we take from one to another. Just so you can find them easier here they are: lizackerley.podia.com/making-your-mark lizackerley.podia.com/your-sketchbook-journey lizackerley.podia.com/your-collage-compositions The links provide you with details about the courses. But if you have any questions at all please do feel free to email me. The collage course is the one I have very recently released.
@@LizAckerley thanks Liz, much appreciated
I’m really enjoying your Collage Compositions course. Thank you for sharing this additional video. Although I’m at home at present, in the past I have avoided signing up for courses when I knew I would be away, so your demonstration is fantastic for showing how to use collage on location.
Hello Jane I am so so glad that you are enjoying the course. It’s really important me that participants get a lot out of it so I’m thrilled. Thanks also re the video. I think it’s easy to forget the collage is portable. I recall that the first collage only concertina I did ( shown at the beginning of part 4 of the course) was done on location.
I’m loving your videos - Thankyou 🤗
Thank you- I’m so glad you are enjoying them
Lovely video. Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Thank you so much! I’m so glad that you enjoyed it.
Brilliant video. Have you made a video showing how you use these sketches in studio paintings?
Thanks Anne - as you know it’s not a linear process from studies to paintings but the studies enable a deeper connection with the subject. I talk about this and how I work between studies and paintings in many of my videos. Suggest you check out the painting related playlists such as painting series. You will find a range of subjects and aspects covered. Hope that helps.
Very nice, great demo 👍
Thanks Sue I’m glad you enjoyed it. I think these small studies can give us more than we imagine. The simplicity and limits help.
Those are truly minimalist yet effective and lovely.
Thank you - this is what I call limit not labour. The limit of time and materials somehow frees us up. I find it so helpful and can be done small like here or a little larger on paper or other material.
In a holiday area I'll usually pick up tourist leaflets as I go around - nice to add pieces from the travels and also there's no worries about running out!
A great idea- leaflets, booklets, receipts all those sorts of things make great collage papers. And these are the things that tie the work to the place. Thanks for commenting.
I cringed at first when you ripped those lovely studies but...the collage is absolutely amazing 😍
Thank you- I’m so glad you enjoyed the video - sometimes you have to be brave- the collage is always better than what you start with! This is shown in much more detail as one of a number of different types of approaches on my new collage course ( link in notes) .
This works so well. Great concept and beautifully done.
Im glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for your comments.
This is great. Thanks for sharing your process. Have you posted the completed ramshackle series? I've just subscribed and I'll go and have a look to see if I can find them!
Im glad you enjoyed the video. I have posted a variety of videos about the ramshackles series but it is not close to completion yet. You will find them under the series playlist which is here: kzread.info/head/PLnyTfaOwD3Ks2QHdXtmcLwvnaVgidEggO. The videos are a mix of different series; some are wild flora, some are ramshackles. I hope that helps.
@@LizAckerley great thanks. I shall enjoy exploring those.
Loved this the orange and turquoise my fav❤
Thank you. This is a short video but my latest Course: lizackerley.podia.com/your-collage-compositions has much more about paper creation and collage development.
Great to watch you.I’m new to abstract painting and learning so much.❤Thanks for sharing.

You are very welcome. I am so glad it was useful.
Thanks Liz - you are a constant support and encourager - with so many great ideas and practical things to pull us up to your best selves. Life is so short and yes indeed we are all dealing with things that challenge and pull us away from who and were we want to be. Great Video! 🥰
Hello Janie I’m so sorry that my response to this doesn’t seem to have registered. Thank you for your generous and supportive message. I am so glad that the video resonated with you. Life is indeed short and we have to make the most of now. Wishing you well x
So glad you’re back!! Love your process and work!! Your course will benefit many people!!❤❤❤❤
Hi kelly, thank you for your lovely comments. I am so glad you enjoy the videos.
Has the damson colour ink got a specific name? You called it purple - is this the colour its branded as, because its a gorgeous colour & I’d love to get some 💕
Hello the words I used were just descriptive rather than the specific colour. The ink is muted violet from Liquitex.
Absolutely brilliant to see you back I hope you’ve been well as well as working hard on the course for release Today’s video reminded me of when you did the online still life course with seawhite 😊 Hope we will see more of you again now Xx
Hi thank you so much for your comments and welcome. Ah yes the floribunda course-really enjoyed that - think it’s been a few years- how time flies! Nice to be back with the flowers! There is something about that connection with the wonders of nature and lovely to bring it into the studio! A riot for the senses! x
I'm looking forward to the course. Love what you've done here Liz
Hi Leila - thank you!- I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. Look forward to seeing your explorations!

Fabulous!
Thank you Rob
