I think in rule 12, it's because the players are attempting to go somewhere that doesn't exist. In essence they want the dm to create encounters and the world on the fly (hence using AI as the dm). Which makes me feel like it should be a good rule.
That’s how I assumed it was, too, but as the dungeon master you should be prepared for situations like that. If you don’t want your players participating in continental travel, they shouldn’t be given a continental map. start them out with a regional one first, and once you have the rest of the world fleshed out enough where it won’t be a hassle for them to divert off your selected course, then they can be given the option. If they ignore a plot relevant or a time sensitive quest for the sake of traveling aimlessly, make sure they eventually feel the consequences of their actions. I can understand wanting to build a massive world, it’s one of my favorite things to do. if you show the players the world you made, and then they decide some other place seems more interesting however, you should at least have an in game reason for why they can’t travel (Important figure is in town, ports are closed as a safety measure, Deckhands in the city are on strike, etc) or have something ready to make sure the game doesn’t immediately fall apart. Granted, we now know that these players were behaving this way solely to aggravate and villainize the Dungeon Master, but the main point still stands that he really shouldnt show off places the party is able to go and then get angry when they want to go there.
Not gonna lie, I skipped to the end because I've already read the list and seen a few videos about it. I think your overall count is pretty accurate. If you remove the hostile language, such as references to fighting and rage quitting, it is almost a good list of rules for respecting others and maintaining good game flow. (Removing the previously mentioned hostile language would completely remove some of the worst rules.)
Exactly. It’s been a few weeks since this post was taken down now, but it did come out that this Dungeon Master’s party was purposely being as difficult as possible for some unknown malicious reason. His requests aren’t (mostly) unreasonable in the slightest. It’s just a case of a person being pushed too far and snapping. Here’s to hoping this group long split up and they’re with players who they mesh with more.
I honestly see the "no more traveling" rule as less of a "oh no! They wanna explore!" And more of a "I said they passed a small town on the way to the dungeon, aaaaaaannnnnddddd they decided to rob the village and kill the village elder and all the town guards and then argued that Noone got away so Noone will know they did this so there won't be a bounty on them"
This is a very interesting way of looking at it, and I can see how that might get frustrating after the umpteenth time it happens. If I was the dungeon master, I feel as if local lords/nations would treat this matter very seriously, considering all of their villagers are being slaughtered, which means no more farms, livestock, or taxable income for them. Maybe they employ guardsmen to routinely check in on towns, or to stay posted at these locations. Four guards to keep watch, one messenger on horseback to flee the moment a fight starts and raise alarm. Maybe a villager miraculously survives (roll a stealth check as the party enters the town. They’ll likely get spotted, but they might survive the slaughter) and can take word to authorities. I’d also talk with the players, obviously. Let them know that word will inevitably spread of their behavior and if they don’t stop, they might have the full military might of a nation bearing down on them. Also remind them that they do have a quest they’re on, and D&D is usually a lot more fun when you’re the good guy. If that doesn’t work, you could also either run an Evil campaign, but i don’t have much interest in that, so i’d just say i’m no longer DMing. i’d love to hear how you’d handle it!
@KrazyKDice the problem with "the entire nation's military is chasing you now" is that its d&d. Which is very heavily skewed towards the players. A party of 5 to 6 level 15+ characters is untouchable. If everyone is min-maxed and knows all the reddit tricks (which based on the way reddit was mentioned like 8 times is quite likely) then an entire military is no match for the group. When the fighter gets 20 attacks cause they've gone 2 weapon fighting and have all possible action surges. The wizard can cast wish and make an army of clones. The rogue has +35 to stealth checks. The monk has open hand reaonation. And the cleric has sanctuary and can cast spiritual weapon/find familiar/unquiet spirits. The party is basically a group of gods.
@@thewhiteonetwo1784 I was interpreting this as a lower level campaign, evidence being that for some reason this dungeon master has a hatred for the “broken” spell guidance, devoting an entire rule towards banning it. When you’re still at those lower levels you can “reality check” your parties with a stay in the stockades or a quick visit to death row (and the following prison break session). But you’re right in the case of a higher level game. Once you’re level 15+ a nation won’t do anything to the party. This would require divine intervention. I highly doubt the deities Torm, Ilmater, and Bahamut would stand idly by while the party brutalizes civilians with impunity. Alternatively, you can end the campaign. If the only thing your party does with near god-like power is slaughter civilians and it’s not an evil campaign, why even play? Starting a new campaign or trying a different system would be much more enjoyable than rounding up murderhobo-esque players in the notoriously unbalanced tier 4 stage of D&D
@KrazyKDice you are quite correct. I honestly think that the group should just disband in general. Also. It doesn't seem it. But I did some digging. Guidance can be broken in 1 way that seems dumb. Since guidance will never go past a d4 and you learn it at level 1 of cleric, everyone in the party can multiclass into a single level of cleric. Guidance doesn't say it can't be put onto a target already affected by Guidance. Thus. If a group of 5 or so players all take 1 level of cleric, they could all touch a single player Character (like say the dual weapon fighter) and he would have a pool of 5+ d4's. And Guidance says you can roll the d4 before or after the d20 roll. So if you miss it by 1 or 2, roll a d4. Did you still fail, roll another d4. Guidance does require concentration, but if everyone is at least level 4 or all humans, you can all use your feat to take the feat "war caster" which gives you advantage on concentration checks. So even getting hit isn't a garuntee that the player will drop the Guidance. No idea how an owl is broken.
@@thewhiteonetwo1784 Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. Players Hand Book pg. 205 has a statement on combining spells, where it states the following. "The effects of different spells add together while the durations of those spells overlap. The effects of the same spell cast multiple times don't combine, however. Instead, the most potent effect--such as the highest bonus--from those castings applies while their durations overlap, or the most recent effect applies if the castings are equally potent and their durations overlap." Instead of getting a pool of 5 d4s to play with, you would have to roll all of those 5d4s at once, and the highest roll would take effect. Good news is you're nearly guaranteed a 4. Bad news is your entire party is concentrating on this one task, when you would actually get a better bonus if one of them decided to use the help action to give your friend advantage instead. Also, guidance only works on ability checks, not attack rolls. So this would primarily be an out of combat procedure.
Those are beautiful!! My artfight user is @Eraser_420
Holy moly and happy birthday !!!! I got an artfight @ livetheender :]
Happy birthday!! I have a couple DnD ocs over at my AF Adamonstro if you wanna have a look! 💕
Happy Birthday!!

The first one is really cool
Woow this is amazing!!
That’s a super cool way to propose 🤩 But I’ll probably miss the question cause I have sh*t luck 😂

duuudeee that's so cool i didn't even know people do this for artfight, my user is CactiCrow :]
Dude that’s really cool, my battle ratio this year is really bad because I spent 8 days (still counting) on a really detailed attack for two characters, but my user is BurntStrudel :)
Tell me about it. Last year I had a very even 50% battle ratio, but this year it’s around 4%!
Beat_TV ! These are some of the coolest dice sets I’ve ever seen. (I’d eat them all, lovingly ofc)
They look really really cool
I have no clue what artfight is but I am now interested
Artfight is a month long art trading game that’s done every july! everyone is split into two teams, and you can “attack” the other team by drawing their character. They can then “defend” by drawing one of yours! This year is Seafoam vs. Stardust, and while i don’t draw, I do craft, which has its own category on the site as well!
MAbsolGirl I only have one (Flitz) and she doesn't have much info there due to wanting to keep her backstory a secret since the other players know my account. I can give info in PMs tho Ps I want your artfight too hand it over
Adamonstro on AF here! This is such a cool thing to do for artfight holy shit
The dice set is really cool, but it is very hard to hear you over the music
@@countrygeneral Mixing for this one was a little weird. Next one will be better!
Ive seen some really creative pieces for artfight already this year but i think this might be one of the best <3

Dang ,I might have to figure out how to do art SOLELY for the artfight, all the stuff around it seems so cool and like it would be fun to take part in
Art fight is genuinely a lot of fun! It’s just a big artistic celebration of giving to others. This is my second year as a nontraditional artist and i’ve been loving it!

@@Ravenclaw-ey8oq Thanks! when you’re making dice, some of them wind up on the ground every now and then. stepping on this d4 hurts a LOT less than the other one
Fascinating... I may stick around
Those look awesome! How much for a full set?
Depends on the set! I sell 7, 8, and 9 piece sets which vary from 60-80 dollars, as well as 6d6 sets for 30 dollars. I’m hoping to offer sets for Blood Bowl and Vampire the Masquerade soon as well!
Orc wasn't introduce as playable until Volo and had -1 Int, do negative was erata, which left the Kobold as the only 1 ASI race in the game. The Multiverse Paid Erata switch Orc and Kobold to new +2/1 or +1x3. I wonder if WotC tried to copy PF2e Background, which gives 2 Ability Mods (not Score which was phase out) and a feat, yet missed Ancestry (Race/Species) and Class also giving Ability Mod. WotC is correct in placing Variant rules in the DMG, as players would need the DM permission to play Homebrew. Upgrade to 2024 is too expensive as buying the 3 books will cost me $84.97 (Legendary Bundle Discount) and then presuming I wanna use Found that's $112,5, which comes out $197,47. So SRD 5.2 in 2025 will be earliest I touch 2024. Now let's compare with PF2e Remastered with the presumion that we own CRB, APG, GMG and Beast 1. Paizo is nice and gives me the Reemastered for the low cost of Free (Digital) and using Remastered in Foundry will cost nothing, which brings the total cost to Nothing.
I’ve noticed a lot of people online have been comparing the new D&D rules to Pathfinder 2e, and It’s unfortunate that WotC is pushing D&D into a place that mimics it so much. It has its place as a beginner friendly fantasy roleplaying game, and i’d love to see it find new ways of revolutionizing character creation instead of picking and choosing things pathfinder discovered works well. The price point is another thing. That’s a LOT of money for a set of rulebooks, and it’s the same issue in the wargaming space. Another comment pointed out that the years of gameplay and fun from the books makes the price point worth it, and while I agree, it sets a large barrier of entry for newer, younger players who don’t have the money to spend. I’m hoping 2024’s D&D has a simplified starter set at a much lower price point like the original. Thanks for chatting :)
I can kinda see where you’re coming from but I disagree. Having your ability scores comes from your background make much more sense. Where does our education, skills, interests come from? They come from the environment and education we had growing up. That’s our background. I also agree that this means there will be a certain subset of players who always pick the same thing to optimise a build. But roleplayers have always and will always just pick what they want for the character they imagine regardless of optimisation. It’s also a bit early to completely judge if this is a good change or not as the full info from the book is not currently available except to a few select people. I personally have been very pleased with all the changes I’ve seen and heard about so far and I’m looking forward to implementing these new rules
While i 100% agree that ability scores coming from backgrounds does make a logical sense, I do partially feel the same way about certain races. If the game had a single race to choose from, I would understand completely, but If I had a level 1 gnome fighter and a half-orc fighter built the same way, I would expect the half-orc on average to win a bit more in a grappling match simply due to the size difference. If the Gnome spent his years adventuring as a fighter and a half-orc decided to study magic, however, the gnome would 100% lay him out in a physical fight. In my opinion, there should be less emphasis on where you came from, and more emphasis on what you’re becoming as you adventure. I also agree with you that this is a lot to judge the book over with how little of it is released. Frankly, this was just a little nitpick that had quite a bit of discussion around it, and I wanted to try a “spicier” take in video format. I’m not a huge fan. Going forwards I think i’ll stick more towards talking about player behavior at the table, world building, and homebrews. Thanks for chatting :)
@@KrazyKDice always nice to be able to chat on opinions without hate and insults flying around. I get what u mean about ur example with the orc and the gnome. I’ve been following all the updates for the new phb, I’m quite looking forward to having a good read when it releases. I love new rules and the new class and subclass changes are all looking like great improvements where it was needed
@@thomashart2761 Agreed. Looking forward to playing around with it!
I was just thinking about this, I feel that race should still matter alot and that you already got feats for 2014 backgrounds literally called features. It just relies more on your DM to harness your backstory.
Nah. This is not a 50/50 thing. This DM is not just a bad DM, he's a bad person. And, almost certainly, is a literal child. Nobody should ever play with someone who would send something like this out to players. In fact, I would never speak to such a person again. That is NOT someone you want in your life in ANY way.
And BTW - the DM being a bad person does not in any way mean that the players are also bad people. In fact, I assume that to be the case here. Don't play with bad people!
I 100% agree. For some context behind these rulings, it was later discovered that this DM was making these rules as absurd, aggressive, and oppressive as possible in an attempt to dissuade his group from wanting him to run a game again because, for whatever reason, his players were purposely making the game tedious, annoying, and mentally taxing for him to run as a Dungeon Master. This post was him returning after a long Hiatus due to said behavior. It’s such a clear cut case of “you guys aren’t compatible, just end the group and stop talking” but the rules list was posted to twitter, where it devolved into some argument about dungeon masters being too soft on their players. Hence the buzz around it, and this video. If I played in a D&D group and the dungeon master whips out a LIST of custom rules, i’d be very skeptical. If it was THIS list, i’d get to around rule 3 before i tap out.
CANT WAIT!! alreayd preordered the digital and ALT cover! tons of better balancined classes, spells and feat, RULEs clarificatinos and quiality of life improvements. If the do this again in 10 years, ill buy em again if they ar ethis good. 50 bucks a pop is chump change for 10 years of entertainment.
Having certain backgrounds be ideal for certain classes makes a certain amount of sense. It makes sense that Hermits (who get Con, Wis, Cha and the Healer feat) would make good Clerics or Druids and that Sage (Con, Int, Wis and the Magic Initiate (Wizard) feat) would make a good wizard. I do agree that Acolyte RAW will see very little play because of the three mental stats. Locking complete customization in the DMG was probably a business decision but this doesn't just allow WoTC to print new backgrounds in future material, it also allows third party creators to publish their own backgrounds. Variant Human was kind of busted because they could pick any feat in the game to start at level one. Having a curated set of origin feats, that don't come with ASI, is a good move imo. If your background doesn't come with the feat you want you could always play a human and get the origin feat you want plus your background feat. Having an incentive to play a boring human is never a bad thing.
It’s incredibly unfortunate that background customization is locked behind another 60 dollar paywall that also doesn’t release until 2 months after the Player’s Handbook. and while i does make complete sense that certain backgrounds like hermits and sages fit certain classes, not allowing you to adjust these backgrounds to better accommodate a character like in the original 2014 version is a big misstep on WotC’s part. I understand they want to make feats more obtainable to the general audience, while also steering away from hardcore players ONLY playing optimized variant human parties by introducing feats as a standard in backgrounds, but tying stats to it as well swings the pendulum too far in the other direction; Backgrounds were once merely flavor and a couple extra skills, but now it’s a major part of your character mechanics wise. Instead of variant ruling humans being the most popular optimized build across all classes, it’ll be specific backgrounds taking the spotlight instead. I think if they kept Tasha’s new ASI rules, and offered the backgrounds with mix and match tier 1 feats, most players would be very happy with that. Considering customization is locked behind the DMG, i believe your take on it would really be the best way to handle it. Using DM fiat to remove ASI from the backgrounds and place it back on races is certainly how I plan on running games at my table. Thank you for commenting!
@@KrazyKDice You had me until back on races. There is a reason Tasha's moved away from that and the reason hasn't changed. You don't need to buy the DMG to figure it out how to customize a background. You can probably figure it out right now.
@@XanderHarris1023 I mean, yeah, I can't imagine it'd be too difficult to create a custom background right now. Pick 3 stats for ASI score increases, your additional equipment and gold for the background, the level 1 feature, etc. It's more of the principal of taking a once free rule in the players handbook and making it an optional ruleset in the Dungeon Master's Guide where the DM can determine whether or not it is allowed. Also I just want to make sure I stated it properly, but putting ASI back onto races by using Tasha's rules for character creation, as in you get +2 to one stat and +1 to another stat of your choice, or +1 to three stats of your choice. I understand that the majority consensus for Tasha's ASI change was a positive one and it would make zero sense to revert back to 2014's for that reason. I think all backgrounds would have needed to make them feel more impactful was the addition of a thematic level 1 feat.
That’s awesome!
