William's father was definitely correct. Always remember that you can have as many children as you like as long as you're alive. So always save yourself first, your wife and/or any willing plump young maidens in easy reach and your children last

So... the arrow to his knee he's talking about. The guard in skyrim. Isn't literal, he's referring to marriage, or more accurately the act of getting engaged. Basically, he's saying he settled down, and started a family. I didn't realize this actually went over so many heads.

  • @thehistorysquad

@thehistorysquad no limp, and it fits Bethesda humor. It's not a myth, people just don't like being told they missed something. Makes them feel less intelligent. Which is dumb, because most miss plenty on Bethesda titles. Granted though, obsidian has better humor. Lol

It always seems like the statistics from back then never make any sense. Like how quickly Harold and the Anglo-Saxon army marched north to Stamford Bridge and then back to Hastings. Or the whole, "a good destrier cost 4,500 sheep." Which Ive heard before. Nothing crazy about a horse costing 40,000£$€. Horses today can cost far more than that. But 40,000£$€ (obviously not the same amount but close enough for our purposes) does not equal 4,500 sheep. That is a lot of sheep. I'll use dollars because I'm American... A unprepared, not deboned or ground or anything, lamb carcass is over 400$. An older male live sheep is over 100$. Lambs probably twice that much and a healthy ewe is worth closer to 500$. Those are all conservative estimates but inflation is crazy right now so I'll be conservative. Even if live sheep were worth only 100$ that's still 100$ times 4,500 equals 450,000$. 4,500, again, is a ton of sheep. I don't think sheep could have been THAT much cheaper back then as they were probably even more important as a source of wool in a world without synthetic fibers and in a more agricultural world in general in which livestock were highly valued. Plus, while a good destrier might have a high value you can't compare the ownership of one to the ownership of 4,500 sheep. A horse, even an expensive one, just needs a small stall, a horses worth of feed, and a bit of attention and exercise. Taking care of 4,500 sheep is big, full time job for multiple people and requires a lot of land for them to graze on and a lot of money and space to keep and feed them in the winter. It's a decently sized enterprise. It's a kind of wealth that really can't be compared to owning a single horse simply because it costs a lot to take care of that many sheep. Pedantic and boring perhaps but these kinds of things always stick out to me. First I try to make sense of them and then I usually decide I can't and then I start to wonder how these facts and figures get established in the first place.

Another crazy part of this battle is that even after it was over and the English had slaughtered so many French in the mud the French still vastly overwhelmed the English and probably could have still overwhelmed them if they had the leadership and organization and will to do so. Which is why Henry V had so many French prisoners killed and even high ranking and ransom worthy French prisoners. He was scared of the French re-attacking and/or a POW uprising. He may of held more prisoners at one point than he had men.

  • @Ben-zr4ho

This battle always struck me as it seems more like a Hillsborough style crush disaster, in armor, than a traditional battle. You probably could have put a fence instead of an army in front of the French and you would of had the same effect.

Those damn anti cavalry spikes were like mythical super weapons. Bannockburn, Agincourt... It makes you wonder why everyone didnt use them when apparently you could be outnumbered 10-1 against mounted knights but throw a few stakes in the ground and you have the advantage?

  • @Ben-zr4ho

Not to be a smart ass but Ive always heard that Henry V both demanded absolute silence from his men the night nefore Agincourt but that he also walked amongst the men and joined in their conversation. Which is it?

@Ben-zr4ho The only way for Henry to be crowned was by conquest as the law wasn't on his side. After the succession of 1328, the agnatic succession/salic law (by male line only) was applied so in 1420, Charles 6 legal heir was his 5th son (the 1st and 2nd died very young, the 3rd died in 1415 and the 4th in 1417) aka the future Chalres 7 then Charles 6 3 nephews (two of them were prisonners since Azincourt and the 3rd one died few months after the treaty of Troyes). Even with the cognatic succession (by male or female line but only male could ruled), Henry 5 married Charles 6 youngest daughter (Catherine of Valois) who had 2 older sisters alive (the 1st one was duchess of Brittany with 3 sons and the 2nd one was duchess of burgundy) so Henry 5 and Henry 6 will be below the duke of britanny (and his 3 sons) and the duke of burgundy (with his potential sons) in the line of succession. The treaty of Troyes was later broken because the king of france couldn't changed the laws of succession (which was already the salic law) and because Charles 6 was already mad since 1392 (Henry 6 will later share this madness with his maternal grandfather).
