The Battle of Agincourt | Unravelling a Most Famous Victory | Hundred Years War [Episode 14]

In this video the Battle of Agincourt, Kevin Hicks continues his Hundred Years War series with one of the most famous medieval victories in English history. In October 1415, Henry V of England, his army much depleted from dysentery after the Siege of Harfleur, comes up against a huge French army at the small town of Agincourt. Henry V led his outnumbered army against the French, who were confident of victory due to their superior numbers. Take a journey with Kevin and the English army from Harfleur and discover how this iconic Battle of Agincourt was won.

I travelled from the States to Warwick Castle back in 2009. It was my last year of High School and the first time abroad. Right outside the entrance to the castle was this guy in period dress, sporting several crosses of St. George across his "uniform." I listened to him talk for thirty minutes on archery and the longbow, all the while he's sinking arrows into a straw dummy at least 50ft across the moat. My mind was transported six hundred years into the past listening to him. Lo and behold, I find him on KZread! God bless you, Mr. Hicks!

I like the way Kevin gives us the gory details.I mean we know the horrors of the battlefield encounter;when men are set like wild animals to kill other men. Then,he shows the strike of the bowman's "pick"& describes it's use.Yes,this is reality. Not only then & in countless wars throughout history. But,now in Ukraine & other parts of our World.

Hi Kevin. I am married to Don Adams who you mention in one of your films - I believe you worked together at Warwick Castle. Unfortunately Don is quite ill in hospital following a stroke a week ago. But I managed to download one of your videos (or at least part of it) to my iPad and took it in to him. He loved watching it. I'm not very tech savvy but am trying to get more onto the iPad so he can watch them. There isn’t WiFi in the hospital. Best wishes, Meriel Adams.

I'm still using the two bows Don made for me while he was at Warwick, we were indeed good friends there and I have fond memories of our conversations and some of the mischief we used to get up to. Please send him my best wishes, I sincerely hope he makes a good recovery. Feel free to keep in touch if you want to. As someone who has studied some Roman military campaigns, it's something I've often thought about. Modern warfare can be fought at distances of hundreds or thousands of yards but those earlier battles were mostly fought at arm's length. So that's where the bodies fell. Stepping or even climbing over the piles of dead and wounded would have been how soldiers advanced and fought. Truly gruesome to imagine.

@thehistorysquad I always wondered about that nursery rhyme - that's the problem with titles - they move over time! I used to do an impression of a Welsh archer of the 14th century - Agincourt and Crécy are my jam! But I learnt more than I thought and it's great to be reminded and told of the smaller stories hiding in the fray, thank you! I want to get my bow out again now! Thanks Kev & "better half"! Makes me remember camping in castles, feeling so close to our ancestors; and then playing (blunt) archery tag around the battlements and towers 😂 🏳️‍🌈🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿✊🇬🇧

I always thought the men on the higher ground stood the best chance of winning, but it seems unless there is serious battle strategy and discipline, that counts for naught. I read with horror and indeed fascination Bernard Cornwall’s book, Battle of Agincourt, and it made me horrified and sick at the loss of life in terrible ways. But such is war. Wow!! What can I say?? This is the episode I've been waiting for, and it certainly didn't disappoint!! I was completely mesmerised!! The narration covered everything (including Davy Gamm!! 😁😁) and the camera angles made the model army look real in close-up. At one point, I almost strung my bow to join in!! 😂😂. Can't praise this enough Kev! Simply superb!! Also, do you have a new string on your Bow? I saw it unusually strung in the background. Once again mate, superb!! Dave.

Your words had to be said. It made me cry. My father signed himself into the army to face the German leader, the dictator Hitler, and Stalin and Mussolini and Europe and the Imperial Dictatorship of Japan. There have been 12 or more dictators since, war fighting countries. Ukraine is against overwhelming forces, with the backing of Chinese dictator, North Korea dictator, Iranian dictator, and more. Steel ripping men apart, it must be done and understood. War stopped, and peace was built, we must remember.

You are so much fun! I love your enthusiasm and your attention to detail. You’re like a little boy playing with all your “army men”. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition- And gentlemen in England now a-bed shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
