    I want to start a organization about helping immigrants feel more at home, as I've met some immigrants from Senegal and saw they missed their country but had to escape. I was interested in learning their language straight away, and wanted to make a project related to that.

    Hi! I was thinking on something similar. Would you like to partner up and be the cofounders and start one together? I don’t really have people around me to help me, I am from a very small town with only 200 students in my whole school where nobody wants anything. And I am an immigrant, but I am a successful immigrant so seeing my relatives and other people struggling really makes me sad. I have some other ideas for such an organization. So if you would like we can discuss it and I think if we team up it will become somewhat easier.

    Thanks for the video! I'm coming here next fall, currently looking through videos about the student experience and I found yours so I'm watching all of them. I also make vlogs so I'm trying to learn from these in that way as well. I have a quick question: Housing applications opened up a few weeks back and I'm pretty certain I want to live in a residential college, but not sure if I want to put Ayers or Slivka first. What's your opinion on Ayers (facilities, social life, what kind of kids live there), and would you recommend it for someone who plans to major in Applied Math and CS? Hope to see you on campus!

    Applied math so SURELY slivka right lmaooo naw but slivka is better than ayers in terms of quality of life other than that, slivka has closer relationships I feel? Ayers is more of a dorm vibe so more partying compared to slivka ig?

    I feel like you just screwed up your recs though. You aren’t supposed to see ur recs like at all. My teachers and college consuleors basically told me to waive my rights to see the letter because if you don’t, colleges take it as like you influenced what the recommendation letter said. And i disagree with the point on teachers not knowing you. You should only ask for rec letters from classes you had for 2 semesters and that you actively engage in the class. The teacher isn’t going to know you at all if you are in the back of the class and barely participate and will have nothing to write for your rec letter.

  • @vincent_yang
    @vincent_yang5 ай бұрын

    Yea def screwed up on the recs lol that's the point of the video, but i dont think it's the same reason as what you said, so i just wanted to clarify for anyone reading I didn't ask to see my recs at ALL- I personally did waive my rights, but technically the counselor/teacher is still allowed to show you if they have a draft or something (?) don't quote me on that. You won't be able to see the final result though, like I didn't see the final letter they sent in, even though the teachers did ask for guidelines (and I didn't request any changes or anything for the stuff they told me they wanted to write about which was the point of my video imo). I didn't get to see my counselor recc until I was applying for a scholarship way after my college apps, but I later learned that it was the same recc letter she sent to colleges, and it was made from this form she sent at the beginning of the year that I didn't think too much about bc I didnt know it was for the letter. SO what ended up happening was my counselor and teacher reccs just said the same thing since it was just the same info lol... the best recc letters define diffeernt aspects about you- and only you can technically control that info depending on what you tell the teacher in your coffee conversation about the recc letter. That being said, I didn't really like my counselor's letter because it was like word by word what I wrote on the form, and despite me co-founding the student council (it was a small school), and becoming president- none of that was ever emphasized in the recommendation letter really- and I actually made an impact that wasn't outlined at all-and if the counselor had written on about it... it would've made my app much stronger since she comes from a position of authority... Basically, she had a template and copy-pasted everything over from the form... which imo at that time was kinda lazy, but she does have like 200-300 students to write letters for ig... My point on teachers not knowing you would apply in the case that you have a big class (or in my case, my final two years were online, so it was kinda hard to have the same feeling of connection), but also applies to when there aren't classes in which teachers are shared in those subjects- which also applied to me in that case. That being said just know that this is completely subjective, so it's just my experience imo

  • @vincent_yang
    @vincent_yang5 ай бұрын

    But back to the point of the rec letters from teachers with 2 semesters, if you just go to class it's not really enough for them to rlly know you, unless you work with them in a club or social activity, but there's much more depth that can be explored in a coffee chat -> and if teachers are busy, then the stuff I said in the video applies (I do think my opinions have changed since the making of the video, but I digress lol)

  • @danielwang5981
    @danielwang59815 ай бұрын

    @@vincent_yang yeah i guess that is true thinking about it. My first rec had the me send the teacher the answers to a whole list of questions she asked. The second teacher wanted me to make a flipgrid video as to why i wanted him to be my recommendation.

  • @danielwang5981
    @danielwang59815 ай бұрын

    @@vincent_yang i think you could have possibly included the fact you cofounded the student council inside the form that the counselor sent you. Since she did just copy it word for word it would’ve worked out

  • @danielwang5981
    @danielwang59815 ай бұрын

    @@vincent_yang my teacher had a list of requirements for asking for a rec letter and i think it is good, and its how you know the teacher does know you. You don’t need to do coffee chats or use up the teacher’s free time. You should probably consider asking me for a letter of recommendation if: · I have taught you for more than one semester. · You had a weak start to the term but worked your way up (writing, participation, effort, attitude). · You earned consistently high marks on writing assignments (5.5/A), or you ever earned a 6 /A+. · You showed evidence of completing the readings. · You participated at least once a day. · You plan to major in English in college. You should probably not ask me if: · You did not participate often in class discussions. · You turned in work late / I had to remind you to turn in work. · You were frequently late to class or absent. · You frequently did not read / scored poorly on reading quizzes. · You were more successful in another humanities class (even one from sophomore year). · You plan to major in history, foreign language, art, or music in college (ask a teacher of that subject). And if you have things u think they needa add or know about you, you can include it into a email. What I’m saying is it should be enough for them to know you if you are proactive jn the class.

Here's the new one: We want to be sure we’re considering your application in the context of your personal experiences: What aspects of your background, your identity, or your school, community, and/or household settings have most shaped how you see yourself engaging in Northwestern’s community, be it academically, extracurricularly, culturally, politically, socially, or otherwise? P.S. : 0:44 Unfortunately, your video wasn't evergreen. And of course, I'm waiting for the new video (even though it's not gonna help me, but I'm still interested in your perspective).
