I was looking at videos for stretching for high kicks…. 🥋 Somehow stumbled on this and listened to it all - a wonderful discussion, so much wider than gymnastics - ego, learning, reflection and self discovery… a great listen. 👍

Hey there, bit of a desperation comment here. ~6 months ago I began self-teaching flips. So I’m not exactly a pro gymnast. Regardless it’s gone well until the last few weeks. After a session of backflips, my lower back becomes quite tight and painful; however, I only really feel the pain when I did forward bending (like at 0:05 here). I don’t feel it when bending backwards. It usually goes away within 2-3 days, but it is very irritating, and I am terrified it will develop into something more severe. I live in a poor area in the middle of nowhere so I can’t really see a PT. Online, Most sources tell me it’s a combo of very tight hamstrings + hip flexors and a weak core leading to excessive strain on my lumbar muscles. Does this sound right to you? Is stretching the lower body + strengthening the core the plan here? Thank you very much!!!

As a 2x Olympian in the pole vault(lots of sprinting) who has made my way back to coaching gymnastics( my first love) it’s refreshing to hear good sprint mechanic information being put out there. I do a lot of sprint mechanic drills and running mechanics strength with them as well.! Thank u! Loving the website and information!

Have had heel issues for 7 months now. Wasn’t fasciitis, maybe Baxters nerve entrapment, but is not 100% better. Could it be this? I’ve gone to a podiatrist and chiropractor. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

This is great information but quick question, where would you take a gymnast to get a screening like this to tell us what is truly going on? I am assuming that our Gymnastic Coach is not qualified to do this test so who should we ask to do this test? Want to make sure we ask the appropriate people but not sure if it is a Sports Medicine Doctor or PT? If you were closer I would request you! Thanks for always helping all of us out with all this very important information.

I have a question, I am a chiropractor and a mechanical engineer. Just curious about the compression load evaluation and the heel drop. So it is done without focusing contracting the obliques and then with contraction. Stu mentions that the contraction stabilizes the spine. I am just wondering when not contracting all the load goes completely through the spine while when contracting the obliques the load is spread out by increasing the area due to the stiffness of the obliques. Stress is force over area (F=P/A). Also they are attached to the ribs that might absorb the load like a spring. Hypothetically if the radius of the vertebral body is .75 inches the area is 2.2 sq inches. If the outer oblique radius is 6 inches and inner oblique is 5.5 inches (this is all arbitrary to make a point) the area of the internal and external oblique is 113-95= 18 sq inches. 9x the area of just the vertebrae which will increase the area decreasing the load on the vertebrae dramatically. Appreciate your thoughts.

I have a lower back problem through years of heavy manual labour, and this is my 3rd day of doing lower back exercises, and already I can feel a big difference in my back, I start with the Thoracic Rotaion, and then 4 other's, I have not got this one on my list but after a couple of weeks will give it a try. Thanks for putting this video up.

How many rep of something do you increase rep over volume for exemple if I can do 10 rep is it time to increase weight or to go for 11 rep ? or is it at 5 rep at 6 rep 8 rep ? when do you suggest to increase rep of a control strength exercise over increasing the rep ? I am not a gymnast but I do various strength training callisthenic movement and I am curious when I should start weighted callisthenic rather than increasing rep. Exemple if I could do 15 strict pullup with 1 second pause at the top should. I do 10 weighed pullup instead and find the correct weight for 10 ? Or should I go up to say 25 or 35 pullup ?

If you tore your ACL most likely you will need surgery to actually have an ACL doing its function. Without ACL you can get used to living like that but it will never be the same. I’m 3 months 15 days post surgery and I’m recovering very fast with physical therapy and now joined the gym.
