I wondered if they still did songs like they did in the late 1980s - and they do. Whoever is playing bass stays pretty true to the original sound. The synthesizer is exactly like it was back then so it makes me wonder if any of this was prerecorded - or they just have a very good person playing it. Just stunned at how good this in the 2020s nearly 40 years later.

YA Billy is not playing the background rythmn guitar. Only the solo/lead parts. So a recorded track for sure.

It's an open secret that Billy has been lip-syncing this song for years because he can't hit those high notes anymore. As far as I know, it's the only song in their set list where the vocals aren't live.

@@KevinReeve I’ve watched hundreds of performances of Legs live over the years and I’ve never seen anything other than Billy’s live guitar playing on this song. They do use some prerecorded guitar parts on backing tracks for other songs, but not on Legs. There is, of course, the obvious synthesizer foundation for the song that is part of the prerecorded track. As far as vocals, Billy has always used prerecorded vocals for Legs dating back to the earliest performances of the song in the 1980s. I’ve never heard him sing it truly live, although there have been a few performances when he tried to sing along with the prerecorded vocals, which hasn’t really sounded that great - maybe it sounds different in person in the audience. As a longtime ZZ Top fan, one of the things I’ve always wanted to hear but now won’t be able to is for the boys to play Legs with Dusty singing vocals (please tell me there is a recording of this somewhere in the ZZ vaults).

These guys rock...but lot's of help in the background. Sequencers, extra guitars, background vocals.

The vocals are backing tracks. They do this a lot. Frank is on a click. Also the obviously fake cowbell makes me question if the metronome made it to the mains

The lead vocal is not ONLY prerecorded, it’s literally the album recording.

Only the synth is playback, so of course Frank is on the synth's click. But the sequence is so simple that it could be played live by anybody backstage. Z and Kicky_sam, go and hear them live before writing a load of bullshit.

@@florianpilon the lead vocal is literally the original recording from the studio album. Listen to every recorded example of the song and it’s identical vocal.

@@SamPlaysBass49 No magic or trickery in there. BFG is a good singer and musician, simple as that. Sings this song for 40 years, so capable of singing it perfectly live each time.

He is on a click. Which makes it more impressive in some ways. They use backing tracks a lot. And the vocals are being lipsynced on this one.
