ZORBA THE GREEK. My father, Evangellos, was a stern disciplinarian yet bundled within a silk vail of sentimentality. On a warm, sunny afternoon, I took him to the cinema to see Anthony Quinn play “Zorba the Greek”. During the movie, he calmly asked me what village Antony Quinn's family was from in Greece. "No Pop..he's Mexican and Irish”...I said. Well quite upset hearing this and with an anger ready to swing an arm toward my face for disrespecting him, I persuaded my dad to keep calm and watch the entire movie. He did not appreciate the way ELLAS, the ancient historic name of his birthplace ( he refused to utter the word Greece..."It's ELLAS", he would demand" ) was depicted casting the poor populous of Crete in such a disrespectful manner….BUT….in that classic scene when Zorba, with sparkles in his eyes, hungrily looking at the sea ...started running impulsively toward it.... tearing off his clothes....”butt naked” ….diving into the crystal blue waters of the Aegean Sea….and !…….well my Dad burst out laughing like a wild, crazed Zorba. He was beside himself ! Why….you could see his tears rolling down his face...hearing that explosive laughter all the way outside in the parking lot. Later on, he admitted to me that he, as a youth,..."did the same Damn Thing ! " Memories

yes, in addition to the beauty of the scene & the human empowerment side, it is perhaps the first film that addresses the relations of north/south peoples.
…. An absolutely perfect comment….. “When everything is lost but hope, dance like Zorba”. Oh yes! Thank you…… 🎶🎶🎶 💖 👍.

No one ever filled the void left by Anthony Quinn. A model man.

You mean model actor not model man...like most of us very susseptable to that which is common to man our selfish me me me ego nature...but as an actor I fully agree ...one of the greatest ever...
Quinn who was an American of Mexican stock was very good at playing Greeks. I recall that he was also memorable in The Magus, playing along side Michael Caine. And he did a convincing Italian rogue in La Strada (Fellini). One of the great character actors of all time, greatly missed.

A brilliant, iconic scene. Bravo!
Zorba is fascinating, he tries to teach many things,to take risks, dares to fail, and laughs if that happens, the journey is.important even if we fail.He enjoys life. The movie is much.more complex than this and fascinating. Thanks for sharing this video

You would think Anthony Quinn was Greek for thousands of years. He should have got the Oscar. Zorba’s greatest statement, A man must be somewhat crazy so that he dares to cut the ropes. That I remember forever.

RIP Mikis Theodorakis
Un final superb, al unui film dur, o apoteoza a speranței, a încrederii în oameni, infirmat din păcate de ce se întâmplă astăzi, trist, f, trist,,,,,

Anthony Quinn was indeed robbed of Best Actor for the Academy Award that year. Gregory Peck won it and.. yes.. great in to "Kill a Mockingbird'.....but against Quinn's portrayal of Zorba....absolutely NO COMPARRISON. Give it back to the man who deserved it the MOST.....ANTHONY QUINN.....WE ALL KNOW IT ! NOONE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY COULD DO IT..... BETTER ! ΓΙΑΣΟΥ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ
pure class
