    This is one of the best interviews I've seen the last decades. This is more than a watch talk. The thoughts are the vision of next economy generation. Eternal, life as the important asset, King and Queen as customer and product which needs to be combined perfectly. Love as social, ethic etc. Behavior. And much more. Let an economist create business theories of that things.

    Having watched JCB's previous speeches in different occasions many times and knowing his basic ideology and critical thinking, I still felt this was an amazing interview with a great deal of passion and food of thought! One might not agree with everything he said, of course. But as he is arguably one of the most experienced living person in the watch industry for the past half century, it's always beneficial to listen to and ponder about what he says. Bravo!!

    I love the passion and he has some good points. Connection to the eternal through watches seems like a theme that is already going on ... 0-service Rolex should be a thing. But I disagree with some aspects: - this is not the same as the Spanish flu which killed 2.7% of the entire world population (would be equivalent to 210 mio. today) in 1918 nobody was getting on a plane from Wuhan to NYC in a day ... - digital mass surveillance will not solve this but decrease everybody's freedom

    Teaching Europeans that customer is the boss is like teaching Basel World owners that you must not keep customer's money without their consent while your Fair has been cancelled. Changing European business culture into Anglo-Saxon or American culture of customer service and customer-focus would require cultural and generational change. In other words it will take another 30-50 years at a minimum. Customer always right is antithetical idea to most businesses in Europe. That is why there is very little trust between consumers and retailers in EU (especially online).

  • @ljr35

    @ljr35

    sorry but that's nonsense. customer service is no better in the UK or US than in continental Europe. would you buy a Ford over Mercedes or Porsche? Ralph Lauren over Chanel? I can't even think of a decent, never mind a luxury US watch brand. and as for the way the US manages health care, social services and education... I think I know where I'd rather live. you can keep your apple watches also thanks.

    @@ljr35 You have no choice of where to live, despite what you might've imagined. You live where you are born, probably 2 hours away from your parents. That defines your life experience and it will not likely change. The examples you have listed tell me you don't even grasp the argument. Customer focus has NOTHING to do with luxury brands. We are talking about CULTURE not RL vs. Chanel.

  • @ljr35

    @@anonymousonlineuser6543 Well I think you are being trite and making such sweeping generalisations that they render your argument pointless, and not a little arrogant. I've found actual existing US companies terrible to deal with and have had few problems in France, Italy, Portugal or Spain. If customer service is so great in the US how do you explain the bizarre (and I would assert profoundly unequal) way the US runs things like its healthcare, third level education system, social services and so on - this would lead me to despair if I was unlucky enough to live there again (yes I lived in the US for a while and also in Continental Europe). as for living 2 hours from where I was born, I live in Ireland so nowhere is much more than 3 hours from anywhere else so you have me on that one...

    I disagree on new consumer wanting new things only to connect to the future. What has happen in the past 20 years is completely opposite. Thanks to internet people become more educated and more discerning consumers and thus demand hand made traditional article of clothing, watchmaking , vintage cars , mid century furniture and architecture, etc. People through proliferation of information connect to the true value and true excellence in craftsmanship and design. There will always be a market for stupid people with money (modern art, vintage wines), but true craftsmanship and quality are rare and more and more sought after. So blanket statements about new generations needing only new sneakers, electric cars and new I-Phones is superficial and ignoring obvious trend of looking back in times for true examples of excellence.

    Mr Biver makes some great points but seems to be missing the bigger picture and thus seems to be engaging in various degrees of contradictions. He talks about a new consciousness, the need to love, the need to protect the planet, but then talks about buying Amazon and Alibaba shares, as if these two companies were not at the forefront of the system that is currently destroying the planet. He talks about entering the 21st century but that seems only to entail online commerce, whereas all other goals should pretty much stay the same. Overall, he doesn't seem to realize that the very nature of the business he's worked in all his life goes against all the values he preaches.

    Luciole Dizerot you do realize that he is not Mahatma Gandhi, but rather a businessman and that he was percisely asked about the future of the watch industry, not the future of wold trade and resourceful world economics? Also you seem to miss the irony he expressed and that he clearly said he is not in the banking business. Also if you are searching for life answers, you should ask yourself, not a stranger. He might have answers, but they might not apply to you, or your needs and visions. God bless.
