Zoom F3 First impressions: 32-Bit Float Field Recorder

In this first impression video, I go over some of the new features of the Zoom F3 32-Bit Float Field Recorder. I explain the features of the audio recorder and how it is great for Videographers and Sound Recordists. It has 2 Ultralow-Noise Mic Pres via XLR Jacks and no gain adjustment is required as it is a 32-Bit Float Recording, which avoids clipping. Here is my review of the Zoom F3.

Thanks for the video, try using a U mount stabilizing grip with your set up. It makes it very easy to carry around. you can use the shock mount on the top and the F3 fits perfect on the bottom and protects the XLR connections to the F3

I will try this. Thanks. I believe I saw what you mentioned as well. It is great it has a screw port on the bottom of the device - awesome for mounting (even if the legs stick out)

Nice product, I wish I could use the SSH-6, XYH-5 and other capsules like the Zoom F1.

Would you list the mic and the connection to your Rode mic that you have mounted on the Zoom f3. And are you happy with that set up. Thanks

Hi a quick question please - with the buttons on the front I understand you can adjust the headphone and line out volume. Watching other videos on this product the the waveform changes in size accordingly when the buttons are pressed. If this doesn't effect the gain level of the recorded audio, it seems pretty pointless to have the graphic that changes size suggesting it does, or am I missing something? Cheers, Peter.

Hi Peter, yes from what you said that is my understanding and experience as well - gain is not impacted on the recorder.

@@blakeanderson3704 I have an update you maybe interested in. Prior to hitting the record button, you can lift the signal going into the F3 and this is represented visually with the waveform graphic. Consequently, your headphone monitoring will also increase. However, and this is where many including myself were confused, once you hit the record button you have no control whatsoever of the input until you stop, but you can adjust your headphone monitoring level. As a side note, If using a quiet dynamic mike, it is said to be better to lift the input gain on the device instead of using a cloud lifter for a quieter noise floor. Peter.

Gain problem with the F3. I have had the F3 for a couple of weeks now and for the most part I am very happy but there is a gain problem. I have 3 contact mics, one store bought and 2 homemade. The signals are so low that the recorded track is so weak I can not even boost it up in post. My old TascamDR-60D has no trouble recording this weak signal. Now I have to carry 2 recorders in my gear bag.

With 32bit you haven't any gain problem at all. Maybe you didn't used phantom power or right input setting

32bit has nothing to do with sound! It is just an increase of the dynamic range, as you said. But the sound is related to 1. the mic (!!!) 2. the pre amps of the recorder If you have a bad mic the sound would be bad even with good pre amps and 1000000bit dynamic range! And if you have a bad pre amp it would destroy the sound quality even of a good mic. So if you want to increase the sound quality of your recordings - start at the beginning. And this is the mic. Now you own a good recorder so do a good investment and buy a proper mic.

Yes thanks for this. I'm more a newbie when it comes to audio and have purchased a quality mic yes. What you said makes sense, in terms of capturing quality sound. Thanks for the feedback.
