Zoom F3 - Audio Interface Mode
Ғылым және технология
The Zoom F3 is a standalone Field Recorder, but it can also be used as a USB audio interface with your computer. In this video, Samuel goes over the steps for connecting your F3 to your computer to use as an interface.
A new firmware update allows for 32-bit/96kHz recording in audio interface mode: zoomcorp.com/en/us/news/f3_up...

great video
Apart from the obvious difference, which is the Plugins running from the unit, is there a major difference in pre-amp quality between an Apollo Twin and this Zoom F3? I have both, and I have been testing just using the ZOOM all week for everything as my interface including Logic etc .. and I cannot fault it .. plus it doesn't get as hot as the Twin. UAD are slowly converting all of their Plugins to Native, so when all my pre-purchased ones are Native, I won't be tied to the Twin. Just wondering if you know if there is a major difference between the quality of the two units from a pre-amp point of view? as I personally cannot find one .. thanks !
Hi Zoom, If I have an SM7B that normally requires a lot of gain theoretically into this as an interface into a MacBook and recording into audacity I would not need a Cloudlifter Being I can just bring the levels up in post?
Does the zoom f3 have low latency asio drivers so I can use it I'm with my beat making software
I've got voicemails from my deceased 101.5 year old mother on my iPhone 15 pro max. I would like to save these in the highest quality possible then using F3 as an interface using Logic Pro, GarageBand or DaVinci Fairlight to work toward using AI do text to speech in her voice. SUGGESTIONS?
So when used as an interface... its mostly just a passthrough and your computer is recording? The high quality chip in the Zoom isn't really helping anything unless you record to an SD card on the device itself? Or if I had that plugged into my computer via USB, I would be improving the sound quality over the cheaper Scarlett interface I'm using now? 🤷♂ And can you power it via USB but not use the computer to record? (Just the device itself on SD.) OK, I still need to finish the video, sorry if this was covered... I'll edit later probably.
Found out that I can't use f3 as a MME device class in float mode on windows computers. It's fine in DAW or Adobe softwares. But is there any way to solve this without swapping in to linear mode? It's annoying when I need to use chrome or discord at the same time.
Zoom F3 looks very good. Does it work as an audio interface in Linux?
Thank you for this video. Question about the zoom f3. I want to use it as a dslr camera interface. Running my mic into the f3 then use the 3mm jack output directly into my camera to record both video and audio together. Does this allow me 32bit float with the line out 3mm jack to camera? If so, how do I set it as I don't see anything about this anywhere online. I only see volume line level adjustments. In other worlds, can I still get 32 bit float directly into my camera? Thank you
How do I assign 3.5 instead of xlr
Hi Zoom. So I’d I have the right connectors, will loopback work with tablet mode?

Yes, Loop Back mode works when the F3 is set to tablet mode.
how to updater the firmware?
Having to select "Audio Interface" then "PC/Mac" every time is annoying if you're mainly using it as a desktop interface. Wish there was a way to automate this option on power-up. Is there?

How about hwen connect to iPhone, use a USB hub to charge the Zoom F3 and use as audio interface at same time?

Can I record 32 bit audio while using the interface with 24 bit audio like the F8n Pro?

Just found out yesterday that you can’t record to SD card at all while using the audio interface mode. It’s one or the other. Apparently the F6 can do both simultaneously, but not sure whether it can use different bit rates. In any event I’ve found 32-bit float difficult to work with in practice because the levels are unexpectedly low in many apps and you can’t easily boost them as much as is necessary. FCPX for instance has a +12db limit for boosting gain in the timeline or in the browser, and that means I need to add a separate gain effect to every clip to even hear the audio. At least for me, for now, 32-bit float has not delivered on making my workflow less complicated. The audio is good though, but at least for me not noticeably better than a cheaper non-32 float model.
For some reason, my PC (Win 10) will only recognize my F3 if it's in Linear. Firmware is up to date, as are the drivers. Can't select it in any program (that supports float). It comes up as an audio device in my device manager, but isn't in the sound settings. If I select Linear, it is all of a sudden available. What am I doing wrong here? Why won't it work?

@@DigitalImageStudio I tried contacting customer support, but they didn't really help at all. They don't mention it anywhere, but I think it's not just to do with 32-bit support, but also support for ASIO drivers. Once I started looking at using ASIO drivers, things started working better. Although some software are finicky about it. Mind you, I use mostly free software (audacity and OBS). So I can't say how it is for more professional applications.

@@GeorgiePotatoFace I installed the F3 specific ASIO driver but can only still see the F3 listed in other devices when connected in float mode, it doesn't mount as an audio device so is not available to any apps. I'm using OBS and Audacity like yourself which is curious. I wonder if there's some kind of driver conflict occuring?

@@DigitalImageStudio KZread keeps deleting my replies. I'm not sure how to give you the info I know... Audacity and OBS don't natively support ASIO, but there ARE workarounds to get them to play nice. Sorry I can't give more info. YT doesn't like me today, for some reason.
It doesn't appear as an input for me...probably user error
