A complete video tutorial on everything you need to know about breakout rooms. This covers all the key aspects of setting up breakout rooms in Zoom.
Zoom has suddenly become very popular way of delivering online teaching but many teachers are very confused with the way the breakout rooms work in Zoom. This complete training will take you through all the key elements of setting up and using breakout rooms. This video also includes actual REAL examples of me working with breakout rooms to make it really clear.
0:00 Zoom Breakout Rooms- Introduction
00:58 Breakout Rooms -Basic settings
04:18 Important settings
06:09 How it all works
08:58 Allow students to screen share
10:40 Recreate Breakout Rooms
11:35 Thanks for watching
There are a number of important settings to think about when teaching online including
1) Settings to get the breakout rooms ready
2) Settings when creating the breakout rooms
3) How to put students into breakout rooms
4) How to visit a break out room to see what students are doing
5) How to move in and out of breakout rooms
6) How to close a breakout room
7) How to set the timer
8) Making sure you have screen share set for students
9) How to continually change the groups
Breakout rooms are quite tricky and it is really important to work through the whole video as there are a number of key settings that will change everything about the way your breakout rooms work. For example, if you don't have screen share set for students, then it is impossible for them to share anything when working online in their breakout rooms. It is also important for you to understand what happens when you close the breakout rooms and how the students come back to the main room.
Teachers are often confused with the way that students are placed in breakout rooms. There are actually two methods but it is much easier, especially when teaching online to do it automatically. It is possible that each time you use the break out rooms that you place students in different groups. Students don't always have to join the same group when working online in breakout rooms.
Zoom offers lots of flexibility when using the breakout rooms to teach online but you do need to be aware of several key settings including the settings you need to set up before even doing your lesson. You need to activate your breakout rooms before the lesson or they will not appear on your screen.

I tried Breakout Rooms today, and it worked like a charm. I could go from one group to the other by Joining their rooms to find out if they're doing fine. It's like in a physical classroom. I got them to watch a video first. After their discussion, I got them to write their thoughts in Padlet about how the movie began (Room 1) and ended (Room 2), and got them to comment or rate each others' work. Great stuff. The kids love it. Just sharing :-)

Thanks for leaving another comment, Kevin. It can work really well like you describe. If you treat that part of a 'live' session like you would a physical classroom, where you would watch a video, then set up a task, group them and then monitor, joining breakout rooms in that way, should be effective. It's only when the task or instructions are not so clear, that students could be in a room, feeling clueless or not knowing what to do. Tell them that you going to join each of their rooms, too, if needed. I'm sure the kids love it when you just pop in and say something! Russell.

I discovered something interesting yesterday while using breakout room. While students were in their respective rooms, one of them asked me a question and a window pops up to inform me who the student was and whether I would like to go into that room. I don't know how this student did that. But it's a really good feature that all users and teachers should know how to use.

Great tips! Thanks!! I teach Italian to Dutch students (online at the moment) I got into a comic situation last week when I created two breakout rooms: the students in room 1 could clearly hear what the students in Room 2 were saying, but I wasn't aware of that until I finally entered the rooms after feeling very lonely in the darkness because I didn't know how to access the rooms. Tonight I will try to avoid that empty dark feeling

  • @ttvRussell

Ester, that honestly does not make sense. Once you are in a breakout room, you are separate from other people and should only hear the people in your room. That is really odd. I have never heard of that before. Might be a good idea to let Zoom know.
