Zoo Tours: The Wilds of Ohio: PART ONE

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

As if you needed a another reason to visit Ohio, there's a lesser known Safari Park that needs your attention! The Wilds, located in Cumberland, is 90 miles east of its sister affiliate in Columbus. The entire park spans nearly 10,000 acres, making it North America's largest conservation center! Once a land for coal mining is now a haven for endangered or threatened species to roam about seemingly never ending pastures, which allows for one convincing African AND Asian safari. While the Wilds offers hiking, ziplining, fishing, and even vacationing, our tours will focus on their more popular open air safari. A 2.5 hour guided bus tour that actually takes you into the exhibits, and makes you forget that you're even in zoo. Part one of this three part series will take us through the first few fields, and get close extremely close and extremely distant encounters with wild asses, hellbenders, goat-antelope, Bison, and the Indian Rhinoceros. Enjoy!
Species List (in May 2022):
1. First Pasture: Pere David's Deer, Sichuan Takin, Przewalski's Horse (will see later), Javan Banteng (will see later), Trumpeter Swan (did not see)
2. Second Pasture: Indian Rhinoceros, Persian Onager, Bactrian Camel, Bactrian Deer (will see later)
3. Distant Pasture: American Bison
Lake Trail:
4. Budgies
5. Red-crowned Crane, Central Chinese Goral

The Wilds looks like an incredible place to visit! The zoo that made the biggest impact on me is the Indianapolis Zoo. For one it’s my home zoo and two it is the reason I got so interested in animals, along with visiting other zoos.

The zoo that had the biggest impact on me is the Bronx Zoo; it’s the one that introduced me to the devotion to conservation that many zoos and aquariums have, and it’s where I first got to see several rare animals that I had previously only seen in books (mainly Zoobooks).

Singapore Zoo. It’s unlike any zoo in America and matches if not tops San Diego. They have the environment to their advantage and can use their surroundings. I will never forget walking into the zoo and the first thing I went to was this platform overlooking a small area of trees, and a pair of Siamangs were swinging around and hollering. No fences, no glass, just open air, and the Siamangs were just hanging out in the trees, with gharials chilling below. Unbelievable. The Night Safari is also one of a kind as well.

San Diego Zoo is also my favorite, both parks. The habitat design and avian collection is just amazing. Areas like Africa Rocks was just perfect use of habitat design and smart space usage.

And then there’s Bronx Zoo which is the biggest zoo near me (I live in New Hampshire). As a kid I loved Asian Monorail and the Bronx is just a classic zoo with a rustic feel.

It's hard to decide which zoo is my biggest influence, but maybe: -Oakland zoo cause it's my childhood zoo -Monterey bay aquarium for it's outer bay tank and it's concrete industrial-ish aesthetic -and San Diego simply cause it's so dang massive

The Zoo that has the biggest impact to me is the Detroit Zoo. Mainly because I lived in Michigan growing up and I was awed by the DZ's mission to save endangered animals and rescued individual animals in need (i.e. they saved a lioness who was guarding a crackhouse).

This video makes me even more excited to see the Wilds next year even more! And this is only the first part? I cant wait to see what the next two this month have in store for us! And in regards to answering your question, there are MANY Zoos that have left an impact on me ever since I moved to Florida, each one opening my eyes to just how big the animal kingdom truly is!

The zoo with the biggest impact for me probably was San Diego Zoo's Safari Park because I was fortunate to see some of the last two Northern White Rhinos. And Przewalski’s horse is the answer to your trivia question!

The wilds has been top on my list of zoological parks to visit for a while. I even live in Ohio and still haven’t found time to go there. And to answer your question the zoo or aquarium that had the biggest impact on me was either the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo or the Dolphin Research Center. For the first one it’s mainly because it’s my home zoo that I’ve been going to since I was a kid. But for the second one, the Dolphin Research Center really solidified for me that I wanted to work with animals in some way. And also encouraged me to protect the environment.

Zoinks! When will Part 2 come? And try visiting the Woodland Park Zoo soon! Anyways, 6 zoo trivia questions for you & your girlfriend, Zak.... 1) Which giraffe at the Omaha Zoo passed away this year? 2) Who was the oldest rhinoceros that lived in the San Francisco Zoo for so many years? 3) How many wolves did Bearizona breed? 4) How many condors from the Oakland Zoo were released into the wild? 5) What are the names of the 2 cheetah brothers that moved into the Sacramento Zoo last year? 6) How many animals at the Australian Walkabout did the cougar killed & ate at the San Francisco Zoo?

Noticed the species list in the description, whereas the Przewalski's Horses and Banteng are fine being on either side of Spillman Lake they vastly prefer the hills just after Lake Trail. Also, the Trumpeter Swans were part of a reintroduction program by Ohio, they're more regular visitors than residents. I've only seen them twice so far this year

I actually consider the other side of Lake trail to be part of the first pasture, as the takins and the deer can access both sides by swimming. On my last visit I did see the horses and banteng right after the lake trail, but they were in the first field on my 2018 visit.

I would say that the Aquarium of the Pacific is one of zoo/aquariums that I have been too that has given me the greats impact on me and my love of animals because it's what introduced me to the wonders of the natural world and how beautiful ocean life is. I am going to give a educated guess for the first animal that the Wilds has and it would be the giraffe 🦒. I honestly have always wanted to go to the Wilds and I first saw this place through and episode of Jack Hannah into the wild.

The Philadelphia zoo had the biggest impact on me because When I was very young whenever I would go to the zoo with my paternal grandparents I would always want to spend the most of the times with the tigers and river otters and I also liked the Philadelphia zoo because when I was young they had a monkey species there that I have never heard of before called The Red Shanked Douc and it’s a monkey that is not closely related to langurs but instead they are closely related to the Proboscis Monkey and the Snub Nosed Monkeys and the Red Shanked Douc was a she and her name was Toi and what I mean by when I was young is Toi is no longer there because in 2018 Toi was euthanized and surprisingly Toi was the last Douc in the United States but even more surprisingly to me She was not just the last in the United States but she was also the oldest in the United States passing away at the age of 21 and in human years she was between 6 and 7 human years and in monkey years she was between 19.2 and 22.4 monkey years when she passed away but one thing for sure I would say that if the Philadelphia zoo had Scottish wildcats it would greatly impact me more and the reason Is because the Scottish wildcat is my favorite species of small to medium sized wild cat species and I love the Scottish wildcat because it’s from the land of Misty highlands, land of actors like Sean Connery, James MacAvoy and Ewan McGregor, land of authors like Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson and Walter Scott, land of mythological creatures like mermaids, Fairy’s, Selkies aka seal people and Nessie aka the Loch Ness monster, Land of my ancestors, land of the purple islands, land of weapons like the dirk and Claymore, land of fierce fighters like the black watch, and Highlanders, land of brave warriors like William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, James Douglas lord of Douglas, Major General Hector MacDonald, Rob Roy McGregor, Bonnie prince Charlie aka Charles Edward Stuart, Mary Queen of Scots, Lieutenant General John Moore, Major General Douglas Wimberley, Alexander Leslie 1st Earl of Levan, Field Marshal Douglas Haig, James Graham 1st Marquesses of Montrose, David Stirling, John Gragam of Claverhouse aka Bonnie Dundee, Field Marshal Colin Campbell, Alexander Seaton, Alexander Lindsay 2nd Lord Spynie and Robert Munro 18th Barron of Foulis, land of bagpipes and drums, land of my high endeavor, land of the shining river, land of the Brave and Proud, land of the free and land of my heart forever SCOTLAND🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.
