Zildjian has made several runs of bell brass (or bronze) snare drums in collaborations with Noble & Cooley Drums, but the one we're looking at today is from the first run EVER. With the classic B20 shell, it sings. It's comparable to models that Tama has made for the last 50 years, but unfortunately, the Zildjian models tend to crack, so un-cracked examples are super rare! Today, most snare drums of similar builds come out of Duluth Brass Manufacturing in Minnesota or the Guven Bronze Metal Foundry in Turkey, so I'm glad I got some solid sound samples of this Massachusetts made MONSTER!
I paired this snare drum with a 2018 Ludwig Downbeat Classic Maple kit that has had the bearing edges perfected by MKE Drum Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The kit includes a 20x14" bass drum, 12x8" tom, and a 14x14" floor tom.
I used Zildjian 20" and 22" K Constantinople Medium-Thin Low Crash-Rides, a 22" Avedis Crash-Ride, and Turkish Cymbals 15" Millennium Hi Hats.
Some of the music I played drums to in this video comes from my drumless tracks, available at slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com/ .
The track I play with at the end of the video is number 70 from volume 9. - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I like shopping for sushi at the super market.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

I remember when this drum was debuting. Late 1980s, all the drums were big and deep, the cymbals were as thick as manhole covers, the drum kits were enormous, everything weighed as much as an elephant, and the gig was undoubtedly going to involve a flight or two of stairs. The Aqua Net hairspray, purchased in bulk by the case, hung in the air like maritime fog. And, oh yes, there was spandex as far as the eye could see. 🤘

Great content👍🏼👍🏼. I actually got a few of these and in the late 90's I was informed by Gatzen himself that there were 300 of the 6.5" x 14" 10 lug made, and i believe 60 of the of the 4.75 × 14" 8 lug snares (360 total). Many did crack, however I have both depths original without the crack, and I got them both with cracks (full crack top bearing edge to bottom bearing edge). I used the cracked ones to experiment and compare. No noticable difference. In the end the tension from the heads keeps the shell together, and the minimal los of air from the crack doesn't affect the sound. They are amazing snares and the 8 lug is the 1 snare I would use if I was allowed only one! You can get ANY sound from that drum, warmer than wood in some head/tuning combinations👍🏼👍🏼PS, I highly recommend the N&C Copper Snare if you want another "Chameleon".👍🏼👍🏼

Designed by legend Bob Gatzen. The first run (without ribs) were prone to breaking. That is why Duluth didn’t used the actual alloy for the Paiste snares. I had Ayotte Keps in 14x6,5 and 13x7, cast bronze dw first gen 5mm in 14x6 and 13x7, and cast alu dw first and last gen in 14x5 and 10x4,5. I have to say I found the alu models the most versatile. The bronze models were a bit too heavy (the 13” weighing in at 13kg) and the Kep’s very specific with their 90’s Grunge sound.

If those are cracking, the 2023 issue may also crack. Not good when paying $4,000 for it. Someone said the DW True Cast were cracking when they tried to use melted cymbals.

Zildjian’s engineering and product development team have stated that this batch has a totally new process that should eliminate the previous cracking issues. I’m curious to see if this process will correct the problem! DW uses a manufacturing plant in Minnesota for those shells. I’m not sure that they ever used B20. I’ll have to google that. : )

Hey GJ! That kit is from Franklin Drum Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I just finished editing a video about it hits morning. It'll be out the first week in May, I believe. Keep an eye out. But that finish is based on Ludwig's Lemon Strata from the 70s Standard kits. We couldn't afford to buy the 100 sheet minimum of replica wrap from Delmar, so we had a dude paint that!

I think it’s the alloy. B20 is brittle, but B12 (the 2002 alloy) might be just the right spot metallurgy-wise to make a drum!
