Zig Zag Attachment for Vintage Sewing Machines
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Most vintage sewing machines are straight stitch only and lack the capability of producing a zig zag stitch.
This clever little attachment allows any straight stitch machine to create zig zag stitches, which must be the most useful stitch after the straight stitch.

That is so stinking clever! I feel like the people who came up with these attachments were really having fun inventing little tiny things for sewing machines. I so want this, even though I have no real problem with hand finishing my seams when necessary.

Nicely presented as usual. I have one of these for my 15-91, it is more useful for decorative stitching, not so much for repairs, mending or general sewing, that is best left to a ZZ machine such as a 401a where the needle moves, not the fabric.
@peachescream8650

I have a 15-91 why do you say it’s not good for general sewing?
@GaryT1952
3 жыл бұрын
By general sewing, I mean repairs and zig-zag stitching that is structural. The ZZ attachment , like the buttonholer, moves the fabric or garment being sewed which is not ideal. I'm not saying it won't work...it's actually an amazing piece of kit...but if you have access to a ZZ machine, you'll be better served and have more control over your project.

Thanks for useful video, only caveat, I would have liked to see how it did zigzag on the edges, to stop seam edges fraying, which is what I mostly use zigzag for? Is it trickier when the fabric is being shaken from side to side, can you still keep the stitches on the edge? Otherwise very good, especially the extra info about it doing straight stitch too, to save feet changes :)

Thanks for an informative video. Do you know if a Singer brand foot will fit into other machines, like a Jones CS family series. Or will I need to buy a other brands Thanks in advance!

As long as the machine is 'low shank' then it will fit. Not sure about the Jones CS, I know the used different needles.
Thank you for that - it is nice to see one being demonstrated to show a range of stitch widths and lengths. I've got one which looks just the same, but it came with something that looks similar to the edger - but is more robust and the "ups and downs" are more pronounced. Apparently it is used for when you want to zig-zag two things together (eg, lace-to-lace or fabric-to-lace-to-fabric like an insertion). Do you one of those with yours and, if you do, would you have any hints (or another video if I'm very lucky!) on how to use it, please? Ta... Megan

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Hello again! I've been playing with mine just trying to zig-zag and I'm having a really difficult time getting a good stitch (nothing half as nice as yours!). I'm getting better at steering (it's a hand-crank, so all one-handed) but it seems no matter how I tinker with foot pressure and upper and lower tensions I can't find the "sweet spot". And if I get something kind-of-reasonable front-and-back (if you only see it on a galloping horse) then as soon as I change stitch length or width it all goes cattawampus. If you do get time to make that other video one day (or even if you don't) I think many of us out there who find themselves in possession of one of these would love just to hear about any tips or tricks you've got that made you get such good stitching. (And of course - if you don't get time I understand - perhaps some other readers who have mastered this particular critters might have some tips.) Ta... Megan
Great video! This one I'm using is skipping stitches quite often. How to fix this? It won't do a straight stitch either. When fully tightened, it's doing a small zig zag still. I wonder if it's broken or needs adjusting somehow?

There's an adjustment at the back for the width of the zig zag although it will still be narrower than zig zags done on a modern machine. You may need to loosen the top tension a little.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Well unfortunately it is truely only for a low shank machine and mine is high shank. I was determined to get it to work so I found a high shank zigzagger on Amazon which was trash. However since it had the proper geometry, I literally welded the Chadwick mechanisim on to the foot and arm bar. Made a custom adjustmant for it and got it to work. It's still a hack though since a true zigzag has at least 2 stitches in each direction where as these gadgets only give you one. I'm working my way up to being able to do them freehand i.e. feed dogs disabled. A lot of work I know, when you can get multi-stitch machines these days for low $$$. I guess I want to try to get as good as my grandma was on her straight stitch machine 🙂
