I run 10w30 engine oil in my zf5 with a little lucas and it shifts like butter..

They only used transmission fluid in those standards for a couple years before they realized it was a bad idea and went back to gear oil if I would you I'd put gear oil in it

I believe pre97 zf5's have a speedo cable slot in the top rear of the transmission. Idk if everything will mate up or not. I'm planning on doing this to a 87 IDI with a blown motor. I'll probably toss in a 12v to replace the IDI for ease of parts available and clean up the engine bay a bit.

Great video, just went from the original dmf to the Luk smf conversion kit, I seem to have alot of vibration at idle, it's fine when driving but not liking the vibration so far and the roll over noise.

I've thought about this for a while I wonder if that four speed with 355 gears would be good enough because it has the low low and direct drive would be like overdrive almost, that Borg Warner transmission is a lot more robust than a ZF you just shift a little slower and you have to come to a stop to go into first, I could live with that. I owned a 91 with a 7.3 and a ZF5 and I now own an 86 with a 6.9 and a C6 auto direct drive is 2,900 RPMs at 65 mph I believe overdrive would just get you back down to about 2600 that's with 410 gears, or I could just put 33-in tires on it and achieve almost the same thing The truck has plenty of torque I wouldn't worry about the low gearing

You can use the same cross member

Did you regeared the truck? 3.5 in both axles? Or 4.1?

Aside from it being blown up, how did it drive? Was it to high geared or to low or was it alright?

Hello great video. Do you know if the ZF5 trans from a gas motor fit a 6.9idi. I herd somthing about having to drill a little bigger holes on the 2 top Bell housing bolts. Any idea? Thanks.

That is true it doesn’t bolt right up.

I just did this swap in my 87. Do you have problems with gear rollover. I used my same single mass flywheel and upgraded the pressure plate and clutch disc. Using 11 inch setup

It has a little rollover noise but thats it. I upgraded to the 12inch single mass and clutch

What did you end up doing with the speed cable?

I went to a 7.3 single mass flywheel

I have a 6.9 with a c6. Any idea if this swap would work for me too?

Because its not a manual already it will require more parts such as the obvious like pedal assembly etc. As well as driveshaft lengths.

And was the drive shaft the same length or did u have to shorten it
